Carnival Cruise Lines Vs Viking Cruise Lines For Vacations?

How does a Carnival cruise differ than setting sail on a Viking sea cruise line?

This blog posts realizes all work and no vacation play makes Jack and Jill dull people.

Real estate agents and brokers work some incredible long hours and earned a sea cruise vacation.

Don’t mind if I do. Just completed a Viking cruise sailing on the newest Vesta ship.

Under a thousand cruisers, almost 500 staff from 39 countries manning the decks and duties on the Viking Vesta cruise ship.

This was my first Viking cruise ship experience on their ocean going not river boat cruise option. Meg and I just finished up the Greek Odyssey Island Viking ship cruise on the new Vesta ship.

How does Viking Cruise Line compare with Carnival Cruise Line?

There is no good or back just a different approach to go after not quite the same sea cruise ship audience.

Used all the cruises to draw from in the travel log comparison differences between Carnival and Viking.

One is not better or worse, just offer a slightly different approach to vacation sea cruses.

Shared observations to help you select which line fits you best.

The Carnival cruise ship Celebration was a very fun vacation and the big corner front high up big balcony suite cabin was very comfortable.

Programing of all of the cruise lines constantly considers the vacation traveler audience segment they seek to entice to come aboard.

All cruise lines work hard paying attention to the big and small details. They need you happy and relaxed for the rest and relaxation.

To key in and deliver on whatever “floats the boat” for each target segment.

Polling cruisers, study of what other lines are offering. Constantly adjusting what they serve up happens.

What would be the ideal sea cruise experience can change over a person’s life time.

Viking’s vibe is quiet, serene and “Scandi-modern sophisticated”.

I enjoyed cruising with my young family on Carnival boats.

The Carnival cruise ship boats are larger, more pools and have lots of kids.

Carnival cruises are often families with kids, budget conscious, multi generation groups.

Viking ocean and river are adults only (18+) couples, retirees, older couples and singles that are lifelong learners. No canon ball jumping in the swimming pools. No hairy chest contests or cruiser talent shows to cheer for shows.

On Carnival you find water parks, rope courses, arcades, Broadway-style shows, IMAX theatres.

NO kid’s clubs and the focus is on lectures, enrichment with Viking.  Quiet places to read, play cards, enjoying high tea and the sweets.

Hot towels handed to you using tongues as you return to the boat after excursions.

On Carnival the dress code is casual with “Cruise Elegant” formal nights.

Lot of photo shoots and chances to purchase the say “cheese” vacation captures.

The boat ride on Viking is no photographer.

No camera flashes going off except a few cruisers capturing their personal photos. The dress code is elegant casual, no dress to the nines formal nights on Viking.

I would estimate the average age on the Viking Vesta cruise vacation was 62 years old. On the last seventeen Carnival cruises, rachet it back to 42 average years of age.

Bigger Carnival boat, more options for where to eat, what to see, hear and do. Everything super-sized, longer lines.

Smaller Viking ship, lines? What lines. Peace and quiet and cruisers head to bed way earlier.

Lots of continuing music, lounge laughter, bars and casino and food consumption still underway until the night.

    On Viking ship, crickets.

Harp music at breakfast as you prepare for disembarkation.

Everyone retires early and the ship hallways empty, the boat quiet on Viking cruises.

NO IMAX theatre or tons of lounges, entertainers and less dining venue options on a smaller Viking ship. No late-night comedians or magicians.

Instead of a full throttle high gear eat drink and be merry to not miss a drop with a larger Carnival cruise ship’s younger crowd.

Your quieter, less people ride on the Viking cruise ship like the Vesta feels like somewhere down shifted to second gear.

Viking has a shop or two with limited offerings.

Nothing out in the hall runway to pull you in like sirens selling you something. Whatever you pick up for shopping is done during a break on a guided shore excursion.

You shop on shore for souvenirs and no one is hustled on the boat with Viking.

Everything on the Vesta was extremely clean, no signs of wear and tear.

No rugs rats or carpet ice cream or pizza spills. Blue and tan the prevalent colors and understated simple elegance the vibe.

The soothing sound of birds chirping, water waves lapping in the Viking public bathrooms.

While Carnival cruise ships loaded with flashy colors, bright lights, lots of music and laughter.

    caribbean beach

Each ship like a self-contained floating resort and round the clock something always being peddled.

    Pace yourself.

Try to keep up and don’t feel overwhelmed.

More than a few choices of where to eat, drink, listen to lectures, music productions or comedy shows.

T-shirts, logo merch, gold chains by the inch and watches, jewelry, clothing, a store for flowers, tuxedos, candy, suntan lotion, everything under the sun available on a Carnival mega ship.

Bucket of beer specials, drink of the day for a buck off. You don’t witness that on Viking cruises. Different crowd, not the same focus, less people. Probably not a carbon copy vision of how you and I want to spend the same sea cruise vacation right?

Want to buy a Bingo card, one for Deal or No Deal in the large auditorium? Carnival is your pick.

Get your hair done, facial treatment, sauna?

You can get pretty and relaxed on each line.

But wait for the deals that unroll the deeper into the cruise week you go.

You are on a Carnival ship with the big open atrium and often exposed glass elevators pumping up and down.

With Carnival, the ship itself can be the destination and some never leave the boat (or the bar or buffet line or black jack table).

Heck there are cruises to nowhere that just head out on the blue green water for a few days to fit in a quickie.

    Gimme a beat.

There is non-stop entertainment, gambling, drinking, eating every twenty minutes. It’s like.. well, a self-contained carnival fun, sensations eat drink and be merry.

My kids used the four pools, rope courses, mini golf, roller coasters, camp Carnival clubs. Louder, budget friendly.

On Viking, it’s no kids, no cruisers under 18 years of age and premium luxury cruising. Shorter list of on-board boat fun options than Carnival. Longer World cruise itineraries delivered in a lower key Scandinavian style.

The Viking ship is a comfortable floating hotel used to explore the World. The focus is port-side cultural history about whichever harbor you tie up and dock overnight. The fellow cruiser relationships that happen during your vacation.

Viking’s approach is let’s head to shore to learn about the local cultures and lifestyles. Small low-key table or two of cruisers playing cards. Working on a puzzle. Reading a book tucked away in a lounge corner or attending a cooking class.

The cost for Carnival versus Viking cruise lines?

viking sea cruise line vacation trip
Needs Repairs, Kinda Old. Was Buried, Went Through Earthquakes And Damage From Many Years Ago.

Carnival is quite a bit cheaper upfront but can nickel and dime for the extras.

Paying for the art shows or jewelry, photo package, excursion options. Anything offered that’s marked up for profit to help monetize the cruise from every angle.

Viking is going to set up back three to five times more initially, but you avoid the hidden costs of excursion tours, drinks, specialty dining, laundry. travel costs to and from port. Viking books the flight air fare. Picks you up at the airport, delivers you and your luggage to the port.

Carnival is see you at the cruise port.

Good luck with Ubers, your connections coming aboard and leaving the boat. No one holding up a Viking lollipop sign and helping you with flights, luggage, transportation. You are on your own to build the coming in and out of the vacation yourself.

People say they feel safer on the excursions on Viking. The red coats with the numbered lollipop guides do a superb job herding, shepherding the cruisers.

I like on Carnival to get off the boat leisurely when we all had breakfast.

Was used to finding a local taxicab driver with a well-worn Bible on the dash. Setting up the day’s itinerary, negotiating the price. To at the end of the day arrive safely back at the ship. With plenty of time to spare. Before the loud deep ship horn sounds as the anchor chain gets raised.

Viking ships that are smaller can access less crowded ports.

Visit more remote destinations easily. Carnival massive ships cannot just dock anywhere and are restricted to major, tourist heavy ports with deep water.

So there are some differences between Carnival and Viking cruise line vacations and what to expect.

You have to consider which cruise vacation is best for YOU.

The actual cruisers on your ship have talent and on Carnival they get pulled into the game shows, the auditions to perform.

Viking lets you sit there and does all the heavy lifting with a much smaller entertainment staff.

The Cats And Dogs Roam Free. Fed, Loved, But Free Everywhere In Greece, Turkey.

The biggest take away between the two cruise lines Carnival and Viking in one word.

    Loud or quiet.

Viking cruise ships are quiet all vacation long. Everything is taken care of and arranged for you.

Carnival cruises are never a dull moment, more than enough to pick from to action pack your vacation on the floating resort. They start out cheaper but easy does it to avoid getting financially carried away with the spending adds ons.

Kids or no kids one of the biggest distinctions between Carnival and Viking cruises.

A Carnival boat offers almost everything a good vacation needs right on the ship. The Viking boat is the food and lodging solitude in-between the onshore excursions that complete the vacation.

My next cruise on Viking or Carnival cruise lines?

    cruise ship vacation
Dream, Book, Take That Cruise To Sampler Lots Of Stops On A Sea Cruise To Sample. To Return For Longer Stays.

Depends on are my grandchildren coming and the ports of call itinerary.

The big Carnival boats are impressive and love studying the deck plan, comparing the cost of corner cabins. Loft 19 perks.

Viking has Explorer cabin suites, and I love the corners, the aft and bow location hideouts.

They help you create space, peace and quiet on the Carnival ship. But it’s quiet everywhere and all the cabins have balconies on a Viking vessel.

Are you spending lots of time in your cabin or up on deck or out on the mainland tramping?

What ocean cruise vacation destination intrigues you most?

Caribbean Islands, the Panama Canal, a Greek Island or Alaska tour?

Parked off the Hawaiian Islands and tendering in and out from your ship?

All I know is you work hard and travel opens your mind for mental health. Cruises are a floating vacation buffet of destinations. Looking forward to the next sea cruise and reliving the experiences after returning home from one. That’s almost as much fun as the cruise itself.

The actually planning the trip, taking one is something you earn and a healthy habit.

The Viking Vesta boat ride cruise that Meg and I are just returning from had 500 crew members for 998 guests.

viking vesta cruise ship santorini crete stop
Travel To Somewhere Far From Your Familiar Home Surroundings. You Need A Cruise. Book The Trip! How About Santorini On The Island Of Crete, Greece?

That crew from 39 different countries on the Viking ship from around the World really adds to the cruising experience on all the cruise ship lines.

Travel, especially the blue green water and 100-degree temperature swing kind is good for your mental health outlook. It’s a reward. Don’t forget to apply the sunscreen. Pack a couple good books for the plane ride, sitting on a beach or sprawled on a cruise ship deck lounger.

On your death bed, you will not probably lament “I wish I had not traveled”.

But instead that “I’m glad I took the trips while I was healthy enough. Or wish I had booked even more trips along the fast-moving stages of my life.

Get out of town, run away from home.

Come to Maine, book a sea cruise on whatever line that starts the journey.

Cruise Ships Park In The Harbors Of Many Exotic Locations Around The World. Or Stop By A Maine Coastal Port.

The memorable travel you make time for completely changes up the day to day same old routine of wherever you live now.

It’s fun to talk to other sea cruisers on your vacation and compare notes. Crystal does this, but Norwegian, Virgin, Princess or Holland America offers that. Check them out and look for the deals.

Remember, they over sell the bottom of the boat and the sooner you book the cruise with a room to be determined (TBD) means you can float, to climb a couple categories.

Or pack your bags, be ready to drop everything to race to the cruise ship that is not quite full for some reason.

The cruise lines wants a full boat, other vacationers like you to spend money on the drink package, in the casino, taking shore excursions, buying photos, jewelry, t-shirts and massages or facials.

    Vinalhaven Island in Penobscot Bay.

Consider you have power half the time on a Maine island parked twelve to fifteen miles off the coast of Rockland in Knox County.

Literally every six hours, one side of your island is energized. Then the next half dozen hours, where you live or work you are on own in the dark. Left to your own devices.

The old diesel generator taking turns feeding power to each half of the Maine island is bone tired. But the other two generators in the fleet sharing the electricity production task load died.

Help is on the way but fails to show up so deal with it.

Mainers are resourceful. Grateful for what we do have and working around the daily obstacles thrown in our pathway.

This week, I had a Maine real estate closing with a widow who’s husband grew up on Vinalhaven Maine island.

And as luck would have it, Vinalhaven Maine has three lighthouses I don’t have in the photo collection. What are the Maine lighthouse trio? Brown’s light house. Heron Neck lighthouse. Saddleback Ledge lighthouse.

Each lighthouse helps nautical navigation around the Fox Islands of Vinalhaven and North Haven in Penobscot Bay off the coast of Maine.

Is the “old faithful” diesel generator still laboring, wheezing, doing it’s best to ration the Vinalhaven island’s electricity? No because three wind generators capable of 4.5 megawatts are now twirling overhead harnessing the breeze.

Plus there is a submarine cable for power tether on the ocean floor like a giant extension cord to the main land just in case for electrical stability.

I will get to Vinalhaven Maine to collect a four pack of lighthouses to post in a future blog article.

Promise. To learn, share more about early days of Vinalhaven, one of the Fox Islands.

Complete with the rich history about First Nation Red People, granite for the Washington Monument and base of the Brooklyn Bridge. With more to come on  boat building, farming, lumbering, horse nets.

Vinalhaven has the distinction of being the first Maine island of lobstermen to unionize. Being 23 miles square.

A tight island community shaped by the rhythm of the tides, the pace of living depends on which season you land here.

Vinalhaven is Maine’s largest island off the mainland with no bridge connection. Could you live full time on a Maine island?

Maine has  4613 coastal islands in her collection to explore.

Lighthouses In Maine, Do You Collect Them?

Lighthouses In Maine, Do you collect them?

There are 65 Maine lighthouses. Some are low hanging easy fruit, rich eye candy to simple drive to, snap a photo. You’re done. Or to hang around and dream about what it was like being the lighthouse tender.

But some lighthouses in Maine are not so easy to access.

You need to take the waterway highway to get out to them. Or the lighthouses is hiding on the seaward side of a Maine harbor island that you don’t access easily.

Some Maine lighthouses are notoriously difficult to photograph because of their remote locations, limited access, or their positions on isolated islands.

Maine Lighthouses, Been To Many? Not Al Need A Lobster Boat Or Sea Kayak To Experience Up Close And Personal!

Here are a few lighthouses in Maine that are considered pretty darn challenging to capture, especially riding a boat in choppy seas and bundled up to stay warm creating the photo op.

    1. Matinicus Rock Light – Located 20 miles off the coast, this lighthouse is perched on a small, rocky island. It’s accessible only by boat, and weather conditions often make it challenging to approach. The remoteness and the rough waters around it make photography tricky.
    2. Mount Desert Rock Light – This lighthouse sits on a small, exposed island 25 miles off the coast of Mount Desert Island. The trip is long and weather-dependent, and with few structures around, capturing it often involves difficult sea conditions.
    3. Halfway Rock Light – Located between Cape Elizabeth and Small Point, this lighthouse sits on a tiny, isolated rock in the ocean. It’s difficult to reach by boat, making close-up photography hard, especially given Maine’s unpredictable waters.
    4. Baker Island Light – Although part of Acadia National Park, it’s located off the coast of Mount Desert Island and is less accessible than other lighthouses in the park. The backside of the island, where the lighthouse is located, can be difficult to view up close.
    5. Libby Island Light – Located off Machias Bay, this lighthouse is one of the most isolated and least accessible in Maine. It’s positioned on a rocky island with rough seas, making visits challenging even in good weather.
    6. Machias Seal Island Light – This lighthouse is on a disputed island between the U.S. and Canada, which adds an extra layer of difficulty. Tours are limited, and seas are rough, making photography difficult from both land and sea.
    7. Moose Peak Light – Located on Mistake Island near Jonesport, this lighthouse is remote and difficult to approach. The rocky shoreline and limited access add to the challenge of capturing a close, clear image.

If you’re up for the challenge, capturing these Maine lighthouses can offer rare and unique views that few others have documented.

Using a drone for off shore lighthouse orbits of video loops and photo stills is an option.

Battery life enters into the heading out, hightailing it back if the lighthouse is quite a distance away.

Have a sniper lens, the ones journalists use to get up close and personal in sports action or for bird watching.

Sometimes a tripod set up to keep movement to a minimum during capture helps. Whatever gets amplified the more you zoom in no matter how high quality the glass, the lens, the lighting, it helps to have a steady platform when hunting Maine lighthouses.

Some Maine lighthouses just are more popular or crowd pleasing.

    2. Bass Harbor Head Light – Situated in Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, this lighthouse sits dramatically on a rocky cliff and is a popular spot for sunset photography.
    3. Pemaquid Point Light – Located in Bristol, this lighthouse is featured on Maine’s state quarter. Its rugged surroundings and historic museum make it a beloved landmark.
    4. Owls Head Light – Overlooking Penobscot Bay near Rockland, this smaller lighthouse has a unique history and breathtaking coastal scenery.

Over the years I have enjoyed sampling Maine lighthouses for creating some of the posts in this blog. But you and I decide which lighthouse in Maine is the prettiest or just gets into your system after a visit and more image, maybe a video.

Weather the day you visit can add to the take away.

Just like not capturing the lighthouse at a different angle or direction from the way every other camera operator does gains new perspective.

  • Life On A Maine Island

    Life On A Maine Island

    Life on a Maine island.

Ever think what would it be like living on a island in Maine?

Yes the hidden small out to sea community is part of the state of Maine.

    seacoast-maine-rock-coast
Maine Rock Bound Coastline, Islands. ‘Hole “Nother Expericence.

But a lot like your own country. One surrounded by water and just off the Maine shoreline. Or further out to sea. Monhegan Island is a place on the travel plans. Before I go, it’s wise to bone up and get ready with a knowledge of the history, the sample the community flavor.

So from days years ago as a broadcast journalist, in an earlier life as a young grass hopper, what can I share about Monhegan Island?

The island of Monhegan, a plantation in the Gulf of Maine. About ten to twelves miles off the mainland, depending on your news source. The Maine island is part of Lincoln County.

Monhegan has a shadow island of Manana that is often in the same tourism write up information. The name is Abenaki language meaning “out to sea island”. It chews up about 55 to 70 minutes for the ferry ride out and back to Monhegan Island. Like most of living in Maine, it depends on the weather.

Here’s the ferry schedule and cost to hitch a watery ride to Monhegan Island.

The Monhegan Boat Line, make contact at 880 Port Clyde Road Port Clyde, Maine 04855 1 (207) 372-8848

The Laura B or the Elizabeth Ann are the two ferry boats to get you to and fro from Monhegan Island.

It was back in 1603 you start seeing information about the earlier explorers stopping by Monhegan Island.  Way way before Maine became a state in 1820.

There are tales of pirates, fishing and fur trading commerce in the Wikipedia link above. Tourism is part of the business model for Monhegan Island.

The local Monhegan Island Maine town website.

Here is a video for from just 5 days ago that popped up online as I start the plans to visit Monhegan Island soon.

Monhegan’s Island Inn adds a lot of information to anyone toying with a stay there.

They remind that power is generated locally, no ten mile extension cord from the mainland. So hair dryers, air conditioners, mini fridge in your room or anything that is a big power hog. None of that are in your stay at the Monhegan Island Inn.

It’s let everything air dry and take your time using Mother Nature.

You look way way better in that wind swept dried slowly anyway right? Your hair does not have to be perfect in the sea breeze. No one to impress with only 64 full time year rounders on the Maine island. That population swells to 400 as the red colored temperature rises in the glass tube. But those snowbirds retreat quickly as the temperature sinks, goes the other way.

Monhegan Island is a walking island scare larger than a square mile.

Fishing, tourism are the main income source for the Monhegan Island economy. Agriculture is encouraged and potatoes have been raised on the island that measures about 1000 acres more or less.

    rope shed monhegan island
What’s Going On? Who’s Selling What? Everything You Need To Know On Monhegan Island.

You can text, make a cell call but the Internet is no robust beyond the basics. I won’t be shooting a video and trying to upload the render to the clouds above Monhegan Island on the trip there.

Here’s a video for the Island Inn Monhegan Maine.

Who hungers, thirsts for a life experience on a Maine island? Anyone seeking  one of simplicity, self sufficiency. That seems to enjoy their own company. Or just a small circle of friends sans the crowd setting, paid parking and traffic. It’s use your feet, peddle power tooling around Monhegan Island. Leave whatever you drive parked back on the mainland.

Lot of seagull chatter dubbed in, but no talking, just neat visuals to swallow from the Island Inn Monhegan Maine video.

Henry Trefethren of Kittery Maine for three hundred pounds on February 6, 1790 purchased Monhegan Island.

He wanted to buy it as early as back on October 2, 1777 from Benjamin Bickford. Not sure if the little skirmish with the Red Coats across the pond was the cause for delay or not.

When Mr Bickford bought Monhegan Island in 1770 there was a lone residence, a single barn.

The original Henry Trefethren Homestead dubbed “The Red House” is parked on rocks at middle beach  (Swim Beach). Ruth Grant Faller produced a fine book that one by one outlines all the houses on Monhegan Island with imagery, descriptions, the family connection history.

Stay tuned faithful Me In Maine blog post readers. I will be sure to take a few cameras in the days ahead. Maybe the drone if weather and wind allows to capture more details up close and personal from Monhegan Island Maine.

After the event, we opted to stay in Lincolnville at the Mount Battie Inn.

Neat place with the goal “to make you feel like you are staying at grandmother’s home”. Neat conversation with the Maine inn keeper who had lots of vintage airplanes surrounding the check in counter. My Dad was a B24 tail gunner and we had a great conversation about WWII era air power.

    Goose Rock Beach Maine.

Think one Maine beach is pretty much like another up here in Vacationland?

maine goose rocks fortune rocks beaches
Life Is A Beach Right? A Maine Beach Like Goose Rocks, Fortune Rocks in Kennebunkport ME!

Like people, soils, Maine beaches are different.

No the same. It’s not just the color and quality of the beach sand. It’s more than the amount of Maine beach frontage. The take away experience of any Maine beach is the way it is developed.

Goose Rock Beach in Maine is three miles long.

Whoa. That’s is one long stretch of Maine coast beach sand. Spacing is what hits you first blush with Goose Rock Beach in Maine.

    Maine Coastal Beach Real Estate,
Maine Coastal Beaches. Pretty Rare, Very Pricey. Goose Rock, Fortune Rock Beach A Great Investment. You Have To Wait For New Real Estate Listings.

The quaintness of the cottage and beach homes feels like a step back into time.

Vacationing up in Maine. Simplicity, well kept and quiet unlike wall to wall tourists when there are times where you feel you can not move. Or like you share the Maine beach with too many tourists and the resources are over taxed.

My partner has always loved Wells Beach Maine.

Going there as a young girl with her family for two week summer stints. We take yearly trips to Wells Beach continuing the tradition.

But the more time you spend in your “happy place” home away from home up in Maine, you branch out and explore. Really get to know a region of Maine and what is around it. Meg’s mom, sister Jessica went for a ride to seriously scope out nooks and crannies around Wells Beach Maine. All the kids and Meg had gone to Saco’s waterpark Fun Town Splash Town.

Goose Rock Beach was discovered and a return trip this past weekend felt like Wells Beach but transported back in time to the 1940’s, 1950’s period.

Prince Edward Island Canada can hit you with a similar feeling of nostalgia.

    prince edward island maine
Anne Of Green Gables Home, Where The Red Pig Tailed Eleven Year Old Grew Up On A PEI Canadian Maritime Farm.

So Goose Rock Beach, what did we learn about this beach section of Kennbunkport, Maine?

(Sound of Maine map crinkling, unfolding.) Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are not one place.

Cape Porpoise is a section of Kennebunkport, Maine.

Fortune Rock Beach is in Biddeford, Maine is to the north, Wells Beach is to the south. Got your bearings yet? And you and I have not moved into all the islands off this section of Maine coast.

The woods and water for solitude in Maine have their own reward. Parked lakeside in Maine hits the soul. Waling a sandy beach or rocky shoreline with sea air and breeze. Hiking to the top of a mountain trail hits you deeply as you gaze out from peak perch.

There is nothing to compare with the Maine coastal beach sand, and rolling Atlantic Ocean waves in the “lobstah” state.

    barnacle billys

Part of it is more than the natural beauty setting. Add in the fresh seafood harvested fresh and local from deep blue and green water out front. And how hard the local property owners work to preserve and protect their piece of the Maine beach.

But underneath it all is like the trek to the Holy land. A deep spiritual emotion that wells up inside a person. Positioned near, on or in view the Maine ocean beach location for many is a mix of tradition, fond family memories.

The salt air, sea breeze, lobster boats, schooner sails and refreshing cold Maine coastal water provide life clarity.
