Lighthouses In Maine, Do You Collect Them?

Lighthouses In Maine, Do you collect them?

There are 65 Maine lighthouses. Some are low hanging easy fruit, rich eye candy to simple drive to, snap a photo. You’re done. Or to hang around and dream about what it was like being the lighthouse tender.

Maine Lighthouses, Lots To See, All Different In Many Ways.

But some lighthouses in Maine are not so easy to access.

You need to take the waterway highway to get out to them. Or the lighthouses is hiding on the seaward side of a Maine harbor island that you don’t access easily.

Some Maine lighthouses are notoriously difficult to photograph because of their remote locations, limited access, or their positions on isolated islands.

Here are a few lighthouses in Maine that are considered pretty darn challenging to capture, especially riding a boat in choppy seas and bundled up to stay warm creating the photo op.

    1. Matinicus Rock Light – Located 20 miles off the coast, this lighthouse is perched on a small, rocky island. It’s accessible only by boat, and weather conditions often make it challenging to approach. The remoteness and the rough waters around it make photography tricky.
    2. Mount Desert Rock Light – This lighthouse sits on a small, exposed island 25 miles off the coast of Mount Desert Island. The trip is long and weather-dependent, and with few structures around, capturing it often involves difficult sea conditions.
    3. Halfway Rock Light – Located between Cape Elizabeth and Small Point, this lighthouse sits on a tiny, isolated rock in the ocean. It’s difficult to reach by boat, making close-up photography hard, especially given Maine’s unpredictable waters.
    4. Baker Island Light – Although part of Acadia National Park, it’s located off the coast of Mount Desert Island and is less accessible than other lighthouses in the park. The backside of the island, where the lighthouse is located, can be difficult to view up close.
    5. Libby Island Light – Located off Machias Bay, this lighthouse is one of the most isolated and least accessible in Maine. It’s positioned on a rocky island with rough seas, making visits challenging even in good weather.
    6. Machias Seal Island Light – This lighthouse is on a disputed island between the U.S. and Canada, which adds an extra layer of difficulty. Tours are limited, and seas are rough, making photography difficult from both land and sea.
    7. Moose Peak Light – Located on Mistake Island near Jonesport, this lighthouse is remote and difficult to approach. The rocky shoreline and limited access add to the challenge of capturing a close, clear image.

If you’re up for the challenge, capturing these Maine lighthouses can offer rare and unique views that few others have documented.

Using a drone for off shore lighthouse orbits of video loops and photo stills is an option.

Battery life enters into the heading out, hightailing it back if the lighthouse is quite a distance away.

Have a sniper lens, the ones journalists use to get up close and personal in sports action or for bird watching.

Sometimes a tripod set up to keep movement to a minimum during capture helps. Whatever gets amplified the more you zoom in no matter how high quality the glass, the lens, the lighting, it helps to have a steady platform when hunting Maine lighthouses.

Some Maine lighthouses just are more popular or crowd pleasing.

    3. Pemaquid Point Light – Located in Bristol, this lighthouse is featured on Maine’s state quarter. Its rugged surroundings and historic museum make it a beloved landmark.
    4. Owls Head Light – Overlooking Penobscot Bay near Rockland, this smaller lighthouse has a unique history and breathtaking coastal scenery.
    5. West Quoddy Head Light – Known for its red and white stripes, this is the easternmost lighthouse in the U.S., located in Lubec. It’s a fantastic place to see the sunrise and explore the coastal landscape.

    Picnics in Maine

    Picnics in Maine.

What do those three little words conjure up in your mind? Family time out in nature? Romance gazing into another’s eyes, munching on grapes and admiring the view? Or just to get off the highway to recover from white line fever and the “10” and “2” on the wheel. There was a time in Maine when all kinds of secondary road rest area picnic stops were available to make travel easier, less expensive.

Maine picnics. Picturing a weaved basket with a lid to open? Kool-ade, twisting off the thermos top to pour hot coffee. Maybe a mason jar full of ice water to fill a paper or tin cup.

Feasting on home made egg salad or tuna or ham sandwiches, deviled eggs, pickle spears during a highway travel break from behind the wheel? (Pass me another drum stick, a little more potato salad would you please?)

Sampling something home made and not off a grocery store shelf. Tastes better, saves money and the roadside picnic stop made good use of your travel time.

Picnics in Maine pretty common place.

Some close to home on a weekend to head to a hillside or park it by a lake, pond, the ocean to take in the view. To enjoy outdoor scenic dining where the fresh air improves the taste of whatever gets fished out of the picnic basket. Why waste all this Maine four season beauty right? You got to eat and the time you provide to pack the picnic lunch, the folks you are with or if you just travel solo or a couple. Enjoy outdoor picnic lunch dining to stay outdoors and to enhance the experience. There is nothing like it and traditions are started.

How do you think the cowboys did it out west? Dining under the stars settled in around the camp fire leaning again horse saddles and a bed roll. Too much time inside dulls the experience. Dress accordingly but exercise and drink in all that the Maine outdoor four season lifestyle offers those wanting to partake!

Mini Vacations In Maine | Whaleback Lighthouse Kittery ME

Mini vacations in Maine, Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery ME.

Maine is a big state. But when you live here full time, exploring every nook and cranny happens. Return trips to parts of Maine that hit you deep inside are common.

    whaleback lighthouse
Metal Extension Is No Longer On Whaleback Lighthouse, Kittery Maine

This blog post about a weekend getaway heading from Houlton Maine south on I-95 to visit a new granddaughter, a tad older grandson in the Boston MA area.

The travel distance, how far away in Maine is everything? This time of year it depends on the weather forecast on actual travel times for safety sake, not just the mileage.

If you have followed the Me In Maine blog, lighthouses are always a stable to cover.

The state tourism folks say there are 65 lighthouses in Maine. I always thought the number was 68 Maine lighthouses. Somehow Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery ME escaped coverage. Once you start collecting them for photo and video capture, you realize one thing.

Some are easy peasy or very hard to access in the collection of Maine lighthouses.

Not the prettiest of lighthouses in Maine, Whaleback is made of granite blocks.

I think West Quoddy lighthouse in Lubec with the red stripes is the most attractive. Whaleback Lighthouse is at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor. Started in 1829 and finished the next year, Whaleback Lighthouse set Uncle Sam back $21,000.

Then over two years starting in 1870, a new better built version of Whaleback lighthouse was constructed.

The Maine lighthouse had a cast iron fog signal attached seen in the black and white image. The metal addition did not improve her looks but with lighthouses in Maine, the purpose in communications is far more important than glamour.

The original lighthouse had poor construction but also is in a location hammered by the ocean waves at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor. Probably could use a breakwater to help buffer the pressure from wind, water, ice.

Some Maine lighthouses are far far out to sea.

You need a Maine lobster boat or ferry ride to access. Or they are on an island close to the mainland parked at the harbor entrance but facing the Atlantic Ocean. From the shore these lighthouses not visible from shore. This is like the location of the lighthouse in Cutler Maine, Little River lighthouse.

Whaleback lighthouse is just off shore and Portland head light has just as convenient drive to easy access where to put your car.

Just park it and enjoy your walk around the trails. The areas of both Whaleback and Portland head light utilized as former forts to defend the Maine coastal regions from intruder attack. Used as observation points. To detect any possible hostile enemy force floating in hoping to be undetected from the seaward approach.

More about what it was like being a lighthouse keeper at Whaleback during storms and living in a poorly built original structure.

Can you imagine the lonely but important life signalling dangers in all kinds of Maine weather living in a lighthouse? With only ledge rocks and pounding waves rocking your small tight quarters and supplying all that ice cold sea spray.

You have to be able to entertain yourself with a good book or strive to be a writer, a painter.

To capture the experience off the coast of Maine calling a lighthouse home sweet home. The lighthouses with some patch of dirt surrounding them were often farmed.

Your own farm fresh local eggs, small animals and a modest harvest from the lighthouse garden soil.

Can you imagine life as a Maine lighthouse keeper? One lighthouse keeper I read about bought a piano for his wife’s entertainment. But only one sheet of music could defeat the purpose and cause emotions to rise in the solitude and a single tune over and over. Could too much peace and quiet most of the time challenge your sanity?

Trip Downeast Maine to list saltwater property on the coast.

Maine is one big state and a very popular destination in Vacationland is any coastal region. But when you say you are going up to the Maine coast, where exactly you are referring is not so obvious. Oh sure, this Maine blog post website has one by one exposed different nooks and crannies of the popular coastal tourist haunts. But the further up into Maine you go, the more personal and special the take away experience becomes.

We all seek out our own comfortable corner of Maine.

Maine Island Jewels, Add That Ocean Frontage To The Coastline And Maine Has More Than California!

This blog post highlights a trip down to Washington County, the Bold Coast section of Downeast Maine.

If you follow our blog about Maine, you may remember one post about where exactly is Downeast Maine?

Maine has 228 miles of coastline at first glance.

But wait a minute, when you include all the islands dotting that coast and wind in and out of all those inlets and outlets, get out the pencil eraser. Check your math!

Do some more ciphering. Put some white out on that last figure and insert a much higher number.

Vacationland boasts 3,478 miles of Maine coastline. Topping California’s 3,427.

Let all those islands into the add it up tally time and whoa. More than 5,000 miles of rock bound Maine coastline. You would think that means lots of saltwater coastal properties for sale in Maine. Nope.

This week, loaded up the Jeep with 24 gauge metal real estate signs, had a property listing assignment to GPS along the Maine coast.

With a lot of properties, if you are lucky you can say you see the Maine ocean in a limited location on it.

Or brag to your friends that you are close to the Maine coast. But not so many Maine coastal property listings actually border the coastline. This one does and is front row, best seats in the Downeast inventory of coastal real estate. Sadly, not enough saltwater property or waterfront listings for that matter in this crazy busy Maine real estate market.

When you head to the Maine coast, it is not a simple set the cruise control and count the Interstate 95 mile markers. Then take your exit, honey your home. No no, with Maine coastal travel, there are windy roads. Twisting up and down and side to side like a snake. You pay attention. Easy to take a wrong turn. Get turned around and lose your bearings.

You see piles of lobster traps racked and stacked. Blueberry barrens, more rock outcroppings, different terrains and ocean views. Lobster boats parked on stands in yard or moored in Maine coastal harbor settings. Everything revolves around coastal life on the Maine coast.

  • Maine Vacations | Little Time, Lots To See In Maine

Maine Vacations | Little Time, Lots To See In Maine

Maine vacations, little time, lots to see when you live in Vacationland.

Lucky to live in Maine and whenever there are a couple days here and there, it’s time to explore. Because Maine has four seasons, the same location is so different depending on the calendar spot you visit. So mini, instate Maine stay vacation time. Taking in Maine four season beauty in bite size segments. This past weekend, decided it was time to take in a Maine Black Bear ice hockey game at the Alfond Arena in Orono.

    maine black bear hockey
Maine Black Bear Chilly Cheering Section In The Alfond Arena, Orono ME!

I am a college alumni of the University of Maine Orono campus.

Meg too along with most of my and her family members. The Harold Alfond Arena was just a parking lot when I joined Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity across the street on College Avenue in Orono. I was the treasurer of the fraternity house. Lived there year round working in the Bangor broadcasting market during and after college at the University of Maine at Orono.

Back in the early days around 1977 with Shawn Walsh leading the Maine Black Bear college ice hockey team, it was pretty spectacular.

Had a little bite of Mexican food at Margarita’s in Orono ME before the Black Bear ice hockey game.

You can’t hoot, holler on an empty stomach when you go to a University of Maine Black Bear ice hockey game at the Alfond Arena.

Pat’s Pizza’s flag ship location, the Mother of all Pat’s Pizzas is close by Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant in downtown Orono, ME in Penobscot County. After filling the pie hole at Margarita’s with “South of the Border” menu items food, we headed to the Alfond UMO ice hockey arena. Parked in the steam plant parking lot, by the river. Put on the mask, hoofed it with Meg to the hockey game between Maine Black Bears and UNH Huskies college teams.

Walking home to TKE fraternity during my University years at 370 College Ave Orono ME, I remember watching the Alfond Ice Arena being built.

One board, cement pier at a time put into place. Lots of roof slopes in the design and the kind you can run hard and climb easily wearing sneakers not dress shoes. To overlook the river and reflect on the four year college education bubble experience.

Lines Coming And Going. Using The Two Bench Doors Or Usually Sliding Up And In/Out Over The Alfond Ice Arena Hockey Boards.

We had a Dan Sweeney from Buzzard’s Bay MA in our TKE fraternity house who was a Maine black bear hockey player.

Our intramural hockey games had really crazy ice times because that arena gets used round the clock. Day and night. Every season of the year. It was not uncommon to set your alarm clock, get up at 3 AM and walk over next door to the Alfond ice arena for a college recreation hockey game.

Our biggest rival was Phi Eta Kappa fraternity at UMO.

There were quite a few jocks in each fraternity that competed heavily but also made sure to be at each other’s house parties. Not sure if that qualifies as a love hate relationship or not. Let’s just call it a spirited competition and leave it at that. My Dad was in BETA fraternity at UMO.

Had two boys who played Maine high school hockey and all the games with Old Town, Orono were at the Alfond arena in Orono.

And as any hockey parent knows, in high school, the sport continues year round. Summer hockey games every weekend at UMO’s Alfond Arena happened. And the parents in their shorts and short sleeves come inside out of the warm summer sun.

To watch, run the clock, announce, man the penalty box, to control the flow from the bench out onto the arena ice. To perform whatever chore at the ice arena and then in our case travel two hours back home to “The County”. All uphill heading North. Excited when you see the I-95 sign for “Benedicta ME” on the return home.

You know you are crossing the county line into Aroostook when you see Benedicta that only got one Interstate 95 exit.

After the Maine Black Bear ice hockey game, Meg and I headed over to the other side of Orono. Bagging ZZZzzz’s at the Black Bear Inn right off the Stillwater Ave exit.

We got up early on Sunday to head down to Acadia National Park. Visiting Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Bass Harbor lighthouse.

Every little town along the way as you drive the hilly, snaking highways that weave in and out of the coastal villages and towns. Neat coves, amazing rock formations and harbor views that excite.

It’s all a difference experience in a Maine winter.

We’ve blogged about returning to a Maine community vacation destination but in a different season. Like this blog post on Cape Porpoise, Old Port, the Maine coast. No or very few tourists, no bumper to bumper traffic or waiting in line. The peace and quiet replace the crowds of tourist seeking to sample Maine on summer vacation.

Not as many places open during the “shoulder season” or “off season” but the local operators are more laid back, friendlier and not so busy.

Walked around Bar Harbor, shot some blog post images.

Then traveled on to Acadia National Park. Paid the entrance fee and took in the sights on what was open around the perimeter road. Big Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, checked out Bass Harbor Headlight. Saw Egg Rock Lighthouse too and had covered that area from boat in an earlier Maine instate stay vacation.

The pathways, rocks covered with new white fluffy snow and hidden ice make it be better go slow and be super careful.

Watch your step folks. Fresh air, cobalt blue skies, a few tourists dressed warmly and wearing hats, gloves. Some strap on removable ice grips. Weather in Maine, we are outdoors year round. Just dress a little different in the exercise and sight seeing when in Maine.

Always thinking of seafood with the fresh air stimulating the taste buds. After taking in all this eye candy, your hunger for local Maine seafood only increases. Sure we can get lobsters, mussels, clams and crab meat at our local Maine Piggly Wiggly groceries. Or from a pick up with a box truck cooler on back that can fish you out just about anything sea food wise.

But nothing like tapping the source and knowing what you dine on was swimming in the sea not long before the same day direct from the harbor pound.

Decided to sample some Geaghan’s BBQ wings and lay the head in the bed Sunday night in Bangor because Monday was President’s Day, school vacation too. There are many times just too busy to sneak out of town to see some new surroundings living in Maine full time as a native, local insider.

Had a little Maine winter snow storm change the instate vacations weekend plans just a tad.

Because a foot of new fluffy white stuff arriving in the weather forecast last Friday, Meg and I decided to head out a half day earlier. This Maine snow storm started north and headed south so we got on Interstate 95 Thursday afternoon to stay ahead of it. Pushed along during daylight and just warmer temperatures, light rain happening outside the car.

Good cruising to git while the getting was optimum. We both knew the weather was influx, it was going to change. If we sat still or waited getting “out of Dodge” for harder travel conditions to change to match the current forecast. .

Thursday night staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in the Old Port where we could walk to some place new to eat.

No reservations, no need for calling ahead when it’s during a snow storm or in the middle of winter during your instate Maine vacation.

The winds picking up and change over from icy drizzle to a snow crystal like sugar. You don’t have to be an Eskimo to know about the 50 kinds of snow. Living in Maine, because of her sheer size and many weather zones, you get a chance to experience it all. More than the eyeballs see what is developing. You can taste, smell, sense weather change in the Maine air any season.

Back in Aroostook County, over a foot of just white, fluffy light snow landing to blanket the Earth.

While in the Old Port region of Maine, the accumulation was under four inches of a different kind of snow. Granular, more ice than light airy snow flakes. A lot like sugar, sand and hardening up like compact cement to make it harder to plow or shovel.

We ate at Scales in the Old Port.

When in Maine, on the coast, it’s seafood the choice of many. Because it was probably swimming in the sea earlier in the day.

No windshield to scrape. No snow to clear off the hood, roof and everywhere else after a Maine snow storm wraps it up.

Our winter jacket hoods were up like the zippers and braced for the Nor-Eastern seacoast winds. You could see even the Portland Harbor chopping, ice chunk water and swells forming as the winds picked up.

The plan on this trip was to re-visit and old familiar haunt, Wells Beach Maine.

The next morning, it was breakfast at the Hilton Garden Hotel lobby.

We could leave the car in the hotel parking garage until 3pm when we would be on our way to the next instate vacation stop at Well’s Beach Maine. Meg wanted to walk to Whole Foods to see her Nature’s Circle Farms produce display at that nearby location.

The yellow potatoes looked great, there were red beets there too. Whole Foods a really neat store and supportive of locally sourced farmers, fishermen, everyone in one neat display.

Landing at Market Square Jewelers to check out the estate pieces. Low key, no expensive oriental runs covering the floor that you don’t want to mess up with slushy feet.

No pressure and had fun locating a few pieces to celebrate the approaching Valentine’s Day and Meg’s birthday this past weekend.

All that walking, and knowing how much great Maine seafood is waiting to try at new venues, we trudged back down the slippery sidewalk slowly to wander into Gilbert’s Chowder House.

The seafood chowder was loaded with lobster, clams, shrimp, scallops, haddock.

There was not much room in there for the potatoes but those and onions showed up for the lunch date too.

These instate Maine vacations mean more food, working up an appetite to sample local dining fare and no diet worries.

No, because the Portland area weather was becoming more difficult to drive in, Meg and I decided to saddle up, to get on the road to Well’s Beach, Maine.

Saturday we walked two hours down Mile RD to wander from Wells to Moody Beach, ME.

Saw some surfers braving the stiff breeze, blue skies, sunshine and low temperatures. They had a cheering audience and we snapped a few shots and video to use in future blog posts that always sample the many facets of this state called Maine.

Had to hit a favorite store, Reny’s to see if anything was on the shelves for the loved ones back home.

Grandchildren are fun to shop for and give back so much enjoyment when they get a gift. We had some hours to spend before the dinner bell rang again on our coastal instate Maine vacation.

The extra half a day going in really made the time go slower, more enjoyably.

Let’s go to Cape Porpoise and see if we can snap an image of the harbor, of Goat’s Island lighthouse.

After seeing another Goat Island ME lighthouse to add to the collection, we noticed a couple going into a buoy covered hideaway.
