With COVID, social distancing is key to play it safe. Maine winter is the ideal time to visit cooled off tourist hot spots for a staycation close to home. To have plenty of elbow room, no lines, no black flies. No bumper to bumper slow moving traffic. The kind with a slew of multi colored many state vehicle license plates surrounding you.

You see the guy with the metal detector looking for some jewelry lost by a beach tourist lathering up last summer with sunscreen protection who left something behind in the sand.

Instate Maine mini vacations are way easier when you live here.

Take off a little early on a Friday afternoon, maybe combine the weekend stay with a Monday holiday. Just a few days away from the daily grind and the change of scenery does a body and soul good. To see how the rest of Maine lives and look back at where you live from an out of town perspective.

With no cruise ships parked off the coastal tourism dependent harbor towns, no bus loads of Canadians rolling in to shop and gamble, Maine resorts feel a tad lonely. Helping instate tourism venues and practicing safe social distancing because the vacation numbers are slashed to new record lows with continued low stay numbers. Instate Maine mini vacations, staycations are win win win from many angles.

Meg and I stayed at the Misty Harbor hotel resort.

What’s neat about the Misty Harbor hotel resort location in Wells Maine is how easy the dining is. Fewer tables, extremely well spaced dining in practice. We ate Verano’s Italian Restaurant Friday night.

You get to sample the local Maine coast cuisine.

That’s a big part of the pleasure of getting on the road to explore Maine as a lucky native who already lives here. Could walk to Billy’s Chowder House Saturday night. The two popular eateries in the dead old man winter have no lines, no need for meal time dinner reservations. When you live in Aroostook County, any trip out of this Crown of Maine means let’s order seafood. I had the mussels, then chopped Maine clam and noodle entree arrived. Meg the medley of fresh Mane sea scallops, shrimp, haddock marsala.

Both meals smothered in special secret sauces that just thinking about them make me almost drool on the blogging keyboard. It was Meg’s birthday present to high tail it out of Aroostook County for a few days.

At Billy’s Chowder House we met the brother of the current Wells Maine restaurant owner.

He told us 33 years ago his brother purchased Verano’s where we had dined Friday night. A full day of walking and gawking along the beach and coastline worked up a sufficient appetite for round two Saturday night. Billy’s Chowder House has the same owner as Veranos. From Misty Harbor, we’re talking a very short walk to and from Billy’s Chowder House. Verano’s is parked at the entrance to where we booked a neat two room apartment like suite. Shoreland zoning today would make the unique, all by itself location on the Mile Road in Wells Maine impossible for any restaurant or other business to hang a shingle here.

Lodging prices in instate Maine mini vacations go down down down in the winter and the pandemic has slowed the tourism traffic over the big green bridge.

Walking on the beach but without the crowds, with just the wind not people talking on your Maine staycation.

Face masks on and having pretty much the beach sand and surf to yourself. Meg and I walked up and down the beach, around the neighborhoods that were not clogged with people or traffic. It’s a lot like being at Disney Land or World without the people. No lines, no delays, no sweating temperature degree heat.

After spending the morning walking for hours, we had to visit Reny’s. Don’t know how they do it but bargain prices on a neat location for a wide variety of just about anything. When you have grandchildren, it seems to be a constant hunt for something to take home for a present. Bought the cutest yellow bathing suit for Penelope and checked out the wooded toys for Octavio.

No one home in most and as a Maine real estate broker I wonder about each house’s unique history. Most of Maine lighthouses are cared for and lovingly maintained with donations from non profits dedicate to keeping them up to snuff. Not Lots Of People At Your Winter Maine Tourist Spots. Off Season, COVID Makes Folks Scarce.

If you have only taken a Maine vacation in the summer, every place you visited will hit you so so much differently if you try a winter visit.

Tourist heavy popular Maine vacation venues don’t have as many restaurants open, the go carts and gift shops are closed for the winter. No ice cream take out or mini golf competitions. But the folks who own and work at the ones open are more relaxed, less stressed or pushed. They are enjoying the lull and sane pace and miss the tourist that were not as intense this past summer season thanks to the pandemic worries and state regulations.

    Midcoast Maine lighthouses.

This blog post about adding to the midcoast Maine lighthouse collection, soaking in some coastal harbor life. Have done blog posts before on Maine lighthouses. Over sixty of them to collect and add to the lighthouse photo collections like coins you fit into the currency slots in the tri-fold blue holders. With over five dozen Maine lighthouses, it may take a lifetime to hunt down and capture the all on still film or digital video.

Winter Maine lighthouse photos are even more memorable when focusing and changing f-stops, exposure settings when you can see your breath.

Save your sunscreen too as you zip up the parka after you tuck in the wool scarf. This blog post designed to be helpful, to give you fresh content and leave you fed with more community flavor of Maine leaving then you had entering.

Not many tourists around the Maine lighthouses when white stuff is in the air or piling up on the ground.

Vacations during COVID19 are way closer to home now but being in Maine never makes a person feel stuck for travel. The circles you travel are safer, smaller, closer to home during the Coronavirus pandemic. But I can not think of a better place than Maine to be with or without the COVID19 spell that has transformed life as we know it today. We adapt quicker to set backs and work arounds in Maine due to the take nothing for granted with a stay positive approach to our day to day living.

I have blogged about Maine lighthouses before several times.

Even ones across the International border into Canadian provinces. The life of someone living in a lighthouse carries a lot of mystic and sea shore history no matter where it is located on the blue and green marble. Lighthouses make you think of the keeper who tends it. But also the naval boat transportation going back and forth around it out on the open water loaded with navigation perils. The reason the lighthouse is located where it is to protect the mariner fisherman, pleasure boats and anything that floats for a boat.

The lighthouse no matter where it is a personal passion and each if different for the take away experience.

Visit the same lighthouse but try not just summer and give the other seasons a chance. What a difference colorful leaves, white snow or the greenery make to the same Maine lighthouse visit.

We are lucky to live in Maine where social distancing is much easier due to our sparse population.

Less out of state or country tourists, no cruise ships of passengers crowding down the gang plank these days in the Vacationland called Maine. This past weekend Meg and I used Ocean Point Inn as the discovery point for mid coast Maine. This Me In Maine blog is a hungry child. The blog posts don’t write themselves and need new eye candy, more hunt and peck about new uncovered areas of the state. So lighthouses in Maine around the Boothbay region collected over the weekend to share with you on a blog post today. Take a gander of a few to relish and enjoy. Here is Perkins Island lighthouse located near the coastal town of Georgetown, Maine.

Even without safety barriers, we were brought up in Maine to give other space long before COVID19 arrived.

Manners a big part of it and respect for other’s space is easier when your state’s population is sparse. Our geographic location this far north helps keep the crowds of tourist in easy does it.

With new rain coats, the under layers to brace some coastal winds, Meg and I were ready for Sunday’s cruise up the Kennebec River. The Maine coast line is like a worn out flag fabric. Broken, uneven, jagged and trailing off into the sea. We climbed aboard Cap’n Fish’s big sight seeing boat tour shortly after it floated into its berth at pier eight in Boothbay Harbor Maine. We were hunting for lighthouses, not whales this trip for a spin around the mid coast section of Maine.

The peninsular fingers or Maine land mass that jut out into the Atlantic Ocean where lighthouses live.

Each bony finger of land mass trails off from the Maine land heading toward over coastal 3000 islands. Those usually down a hill into a Maine harbor communities that are only connected by a water highway to those island jewels are vacation destinations that take eat up time. To wind and weave around twisting up and down narrow highways to access. Most not right off an Interstate 95 exit and not quick to access the further north you push up into the heartland of Maine.

On a map a tourist could think let’s hit a buffet style of several small Maine Harbor towns on each vacation trip.

Not on land you don’t behind the wheel using two, three or four wheels. The travel inland and then back out to sea a little south or north or east of where you start out takes time. Only so much daylight to waste. More precious vacation time chewed up when the weather is not just blue skies and sunshine simple. So plan that your coastal vacations in Maine will be one of many taken over your lifetime.

Some Lighthouses Are Great For Bird Nesting But Just Automated Without The History Or Charm.

To see more mid coast Maine lighthouses among the islands and along the shoreline means park your car.

Find a gang plank. Grab the pair of rails and climb aboard. Climb aboard a boat. Because accessing more than one lighthouse, seeing the sights of more than one island or harbor town in Maine can happen with ease. Your highway is marked by green, red floating buoy channel markers. Watch out for the lobster pots of many colors along the way to whatever the four color tourism brochure promises.

Vacationing along the coast of Maine.

Maine lighthouses are great bait that always catch a person’s interest. Make your target stop long enough to savor what each area offers that you don’t want to miss. And stay loose because the weather patterns in Maine are never predictable or boring. Change is a constant way of life in your Maine outdoor plans during both during work or on vacations.

What other mid coast Maine light houses did we see?

Let me show them to you, the new ones and different angles on old ones in the Maine lighthouse collection. That’s fodder for a future Maine blog post edition. Okay, you want more. Just one more Maine lighthouse.  Two small twin ones. Doubling Point Lighthouse.

Hope the images from mid coast Maine lighthouses added to the collection and other coast captures planted into this blog post were a worthwhile experience. People are busy and something worthwhile when you take the time to stop by to read a Maine blog post is what all of us are after right? Fresh content on everything, anything Maine is the hungry beast this blog has grown to become. Thank you for following our post.

Let’s face it, there are lots of areas in Maine to love and return to through out the year.

    bath iron works maine shipyard

Many who make these familiar haunts in Maine a regular visit end up relocating to them full time.

Like the snow birds who flock to Florida or southern points to be free of snow shovel use, vacationers check out Maine the same way. You might discover a location in Maine that appeals to you because a friend already hangs out there. And they invited you to try it, you might like it too.

Maine’s mountain hiking and skiing or snow sledding trails are pretty vast and memorable vacation backdrops. The interior farms and lumbering enterprises are a big part of Maine’s heritage too. But coastal water where lobster hide, salty sea breezes and schooner ships gliding by Maine lighthouses are quite the memorable experience for all of us.

Thank you for sampling this part of Maine, around the Boothbay Harbor area like we did last weekend.

Hope the mid coast Maine lighthouse images, other photos from this region of Vacationland were enjoyed.

Taking them and writing about the experience sure was. The shoulder seasons are the best time to experience Maine. COVID19 just made the spacing even better for a tourist looking to avoid crowds to hog the surroundings without having to share any.

Everyone needs a vacation and putting them off too long during COVID19 makes a person edgy.

Maine has safe sensible vacation options to rest and relax but at the same time being very careful. To not spread or contract the Coronavirus to others or catch it ourselves. Thank you for staying aboard this long on our mid coast Maine lighthouse tour blog post.

Things To Do For Fun In Maine | Find, Collect Lighthouses.

Maine is largest state of all in New England, lighthouses are not in short supply.

It is over 90 percent wooded, making it the most forested state. And more than half the population lives 25 miles or less from the ocean. So when someone mentions Maine, it is awfully easily to only think of coastal, maritime Maine. Especially if on Maine vacations you just frequent the ocean front tourist traps… er I mean attractions. So things to do for fun in Maine, lighthouses.

    maine lighthouse
Lighthouses In Maine, The Image Is So Different From New Angles, Different Season Visits.

Maine has over 60 lighthouses and bet you can not just visit one, a couple. Oh no, you get the bug with sea air, the isolation, the sense of importance the navigation beam of light and loud fog horn played in early Maine development. And lots of cruise ships visit Maine so your highway to the Pine Tree State is often a GPS guided watery one. Dodging rocks and reefs and seeking another water draw to allow the big floating hotel to glide in and out without scraping the harbor town sea bottom.

A Maine lighthouse experience hits you from different angles when you make the visit other than just in the summer months. Winter settings with cobalt blue sky, crisp air and the sharp contrasts of white, gray, blue shades only. The senses get a work out and without the mix of tourists and their camera shutter’s busily capturing staged photos. Or you are doing the same snipe of the landscape, the lighthouse but don’t want to wait for folks to clear out of the camera view finder. Or hear then tee hee and exchange banter chit chat. There is no distraction when only one or two are sampling the Maine lighthouse. Ever tried one on and walked around it in amazement in the winter months?

Winter fixes everything even if the lighthouse photo session is done wearing mittens, your weather tamer coat zipped as high as it goes. A hood sealing in the ears.

To protect from the sea breeze. No bugs. No humidity. No people or sounds that are man made to irritate. But amazing photos for the help yourself that are so different than others posted in the social media streams. Because they have white new snow, exposed gray rock, dark blue water, no green vegetation in the mix. It is on vacation, in hibernation. Like most of the tourists.

    Maine, Whatever Floats Your Boat.

Maine has the runner up largest collection of lighthouses.

Long coast line, like Christmas lights strings, mean you need more sea going luminaries to dot the long coastline. Or to mark island rock reef out post far from the safe harbor inlets of Maine’s many coastal towns. Maine has lots of groups that adopt the lighthouses as the Coast Guard slowly transfers ownership. A private residence where you don’t want foot traffic, public stalkers and gawkers trying to get close enough to see the lighthouse you bought at auction with the residence, companion buildings that tags along side. Thank goodness for telephoto lens but nope, not going use it or one of the two drones out of respect for the lighthouse property owner. The drones are grounded and if lost at sea would be expensive to replace.

west quoddy head lighthouseDowneast Maine, Lighthouses Are in Big Supply Like Other Areas Of Vacationland. The oldest lighthouse in Maine is the Portland Head Light that is actually in Cape Elizabeth. It seems to me this is the one that makes the most debuts on post cards, magazine covers, blog post imagery. Others will argue that Pemaquid Point gets the mirror mirror fairest of them all pick of the pack vote. The youngest Maine lighthouse is Whitlocks Mill Light which feels more like a river lighthouse than one protecting the ocean front. It is way up in the Downeast Region just south of the town of Calais. More on the Whitlocks Mill Lighthouse.

To me West Quoddy Head Light is the prettiest.

Maybe because she is far far north and takes more effort to see. Because she is less frequented or nestled in the real Maine where the economy is often the have and have nots. And not much of a middle filling in the population that is passionate about their surroundings. But struggle to make ends meet to stay in their home town. That is taking on water and slowly sinking as new revenue sources are sought to bilge pump the loss of labor intensive jobs that have gone overseas.

Some Captain’s homes along the Maine coast have their adaptions that make them look like lighthouse wannabees. Serving the purpose to lift the spy glass, to gaze out over the water for the return of the mortgage holder or grantor deed name on the title to the Victorian residence.

Maine Home Widow Watch From A Seacoast Home Version Of A Lighthouse Observatory.

There are no lighthouses in Aroostook County. Maybe that is why the topic is so interesting to me. Because other than one or two vacations to the coast as a youngster, Maine lighthouse were not a mainstay showing up on vacations.

The smallest lighthouse is Echo Point Light. It is a six foot operating taller than it really is, an over achiever like the “spark plug” type lighthouse. It is located on Great Diamond Island and still registered by the Coast Guard.

I promise to revisit the topic of  lighthouses, one of the most sought tourist activity on the long list of what to do for fun in Maine. Dining on lobster, mussels, clams or whatever deep sea delicacy with a Maine lighthouse back drop just intensifies the taste. That creates the addiction to have to have more Maine please.

Which ones have you looked up and tracked down? The visit to a Maine lighthouse like rapids have numbers of difficulty to experience. Some require sea kayaks or hitch hiking on a Maine lobster boat to sneak a peek. Like the lighthouse near Bar Harbor Maine that I floated out, visited not so long ago. Have you started your own collection of Maine lighthouses?

  • The Cuckolds Lighthouse Is Off The Tip Of Southport Maine.

The Cuckolds Lighthouse Is Off The Tip Of Southport Maine.

    Maine Has Over 60 Lighthouses.
A Mile Off The Tip Of Southport Maine Is The Cuckholds Lighthouse. Perched On A Pair Of Island Ledges.

Maine has over sixty lighthouses parked along the rock bound rugged coastline, dotting islands off harbor towns.

Providing round the clock navigational aids. Creating intense revolving and blinking lights, clanking bells, deep, low throaty fog horns. Designed to be manned to avoid marine peril during darkness, undesirable weather conditions. To help freight and passengers alike. To avoid ending up on the ocean bottom. Going into the drink, experiencing death, ruin and destruction.

This past weekend one of the Maine lighthouses to seek out, bag and tag for the full collection quest clipboard check off routine was The Cuckolds.

Located about a mile southeast of the tip of Southport Island Maine. The Cuckolds Lighthouse was established in 1892, the current structure built around 1907. Automated in 1974, this barnyard flavored looking hen house like Maine lighthouse is located at the entrance to Boothbay Harbor in Lineken Bay. It’s tower is 48 feet high.

The Cuckold’s Lighthouse emits two white light flashes every six seconds. One fog horn signal blast at the end of a fifteen seconds time out interval. On a calm sea day, paddling a sea kayak out to this unique Maine lighthouse affords some pretty neat photo angle perspectives.

Sea kayaks equipped with a keel, rudder can steer with your feet which frees up the interruption of paddle strokes to navigate.

Necky makes a neat sea kayak with a rudder. The two person Necky sea kayak can set you back $1500. And adding the rudder kit for another $250 completes the package to explore the Maine sea coast, islands. To get up close and personal with the just out of easy reach Maine lighthouses.

Some of the Maine lighthouses are simpler, less production low hanging fruit to capture, photograph. Each is unique, colorful and completely different to shoot as the seasons change too. And the experience, the take away varies too. Visit and re-acquaint with Maine lighthouses on your vacations, down time in Vacationland any of the four seasons.

The Cuckolds Maine lighthouse that reminds me of a barn, chicken coop combination is one of the last built on the coast.

The name Cuckolds, given to a pair of treacherous ledges at the Boothbay Harbor entrance, is apparently after a point of land on the Thames River in England. This location was granted to a London man as a peace offering, to smooth ruffled ego feathers after King John had an affair with his wife. Maybe The Cuckolds in Maine got their name from a transplanted Londoner is the common assumption batted around in local folklore, Maine island history.
