Ever think what would it be like living on a island in Maine?
Yes the hidden small out to sea community is part of the state of Maine.
Maine Rock Bound Coastline, Islands. ‘Hole “Nother Expericence.
But a lot like your own country. One surrounded by water and just off the Maine shoreline. Or further out to sea. Monhegan Island is a place on the travel plans. Before I go, it’s wise to bone up and get ready with a knowledge of the history, the sample the community flavor.
So from days years ago as a broadcast journalist, in an earlier life as a young grass hopper, what can I share about Monhegan Island?
The island of Monhegan, a plantation in the Gulf of Maine. About ten to twelves miles off the mainland, depending on your news source. The Maine island is part of Lincoln County.
Monhegan has a shadow island of Manana that is often in the same tourism write up information. The name is Abenaki language meaning “out to sea island”. It chews up about 55 to 70 minutes for the ferry ride out and back to Monhegan Island. Like most of living in Maine, it depends on the weather.
Here is a video for from just 5 days ago that popped up online as I start the plans to visit Monhegan Island soon.
Monhegan’s Island Inn adds a lot of information to anyone toying with a stay there.
They remind that power is generated locally, no ten mile extension cord from the mainland. So hair dryers, air conditioners, mini fridge in your room or anything that is a big power hog. None of that are in your stay at the Monhegan Island Inn.
It’s let everything air dry and take your time using Mother Nature.
You look way way better in that wind swept dried slowly anyway right? Your hair does not have to be perfect in the sea breeze. No one to impress with only 64 full time year rounders on the Maine island. That population swells to 400 as the red colored temperature rises in the glass tube. But those snowbirds retreat quickly as the temperature sinks, goes the other way.
Monhegan Island is a walking island scare larger than a square mile.
Fishing, tourism are the main income source for the Monhegan Island economy. Agriculture is encouraged and potatoes have been raised on the island that measures about 1000 acres more or less.
What’s Going On? Who’s Selling What? Everything You Need To Know On Monhegan Island.
You can text, make a cell call but the Internet is no robust beyond the basics. I won’t be shooting a video and trying to upload the render to the clouds above Monhegan Island on the trip there.
Here’s a video for the Island Inn Monhegan Maine.
Who hungers, thirsts for a life experience on a Maine island? Anyone seeking one of simplicity, self sufficiency. That seems to enjoy their own company. Or just a small circle of friends sans the crowd setting, paid parking and traffic. It’s use your feet, peddle power tooling around Monhegan Island. Leave whatever you drive parked back on the mainland.
Lot of seagull chatter dubbed in, but no talking, just neat visuals to swallow from the Island Inn Monhegan Maine video.
Henry Trefethren of Kittery Maine for three hundred pounds on February 6, 1790 purchased Monhegan Island.
He wanted to buy it as early as back on October 2, 1777 from Benjamin Bickford. Not sure if the little skirmish with the Red Coats across the pond was the cause for delay or not.
When Mr Bickford bought Monhegan Island in 1770 there was a lone residence, a single barn.
The original Henry Trefethren Homestead dubbed “The Red House” is parked on rocks at middle beach (Swim Beach). Ruth Grant Faller produced a fine book that one by one outlines all the houses on Monhegan Island with imagery, descriptions, the family connection history.
Stay tuned faithful Me In Maine blog post readers. I will be sure to take a few cameras in the days ahead. Maybe the drone if weather and wind allows to capture more details up close and personal from Monhegan Island Maine.
Maine small towns are proud of their unique area of the state. Tourism in Maine accounts for about 6.4% percent of the state’s economy. I know, that low a figure surprised me too. Or made me think we could bump it up to way more Maine tourists traveling across the big green bridge.
All this space, no crime, no traffic. Plenty of eye candy. But still the tourism dollar numbers are impressive. Tourists pump over 8.6 billion dollars a year into the local Maine economy. One out of seven Maine jobs are tourism related. Maine tourism creates 151,000 plus employment opportunities to bring home the bacon.
Welcome To Maine. How About A Super Sized Ice Cream Cone Treat?
The towns in Maine most memorable are the ones where the entire population wears an ambassador hat.
Putting on a genuine smile. Greeting the day with a healthy attitude of wanting to be helpful. Rolling out the red carpet welcome mat means putting yourself in the shoes of a tourist.
Really friendly, warm and helpful is something any new to your area visitor never forgets.
Returning trips to the small Maine town happen with frequency when the folks you bump into on vacation go all out to be the best tour guides.
The Maine folks you meet from the hospitality industry in the local lodging and dining sector have to provide first class service.
Can’t be hit or miss or depending on which way the wind happens to be blowing casual. Sincere, empathetic, sensitive to help the brand new tourist visitor have a quality stay in Maine.
Like any vacation, a brand new to your area traveler wants to explore, sample the local home grown food, to tap into the recreation. Maybe to just be left alone and veg. And usually to rest up from the very hectic week before they tidy up all the business affairs. For the pack the pack and ready or not here I go.

Plus your travel taps into lots of other service providers. You want to hear what they are doing right or wrong so you can adjust the dials for better performance. According to Maine government officials, state annual tourism visits show a 10 percent increase.

What do people want to do for fun, what do they consider entertainment?
Go to a local museum? Farmers markets, paddling a kayak on a bottle smooth Maine lake? To hike the trails up Baxter State park or ride a bike on miles of roads spanned by classic stone bridges around Acadia? To admire the four season space not crowded with wall to wall tourists? Maine is different than Disney Land or Cony Island, Las Vegas, most other places.
Why not own your Maine vacation property spot and possible rent it out to others with a careful background check and healthy deposits taken?

Making it worth the money and time spent to vacation in Maine hinges on the people you meet along the way.
Vacationing In Maine. Returning To The Same Favorable Haunts Or Somewhere New?
When I was Houlton Maine Chamber of Commerce president, marketing the town for tourism was huge.
Thinking like a brand new traveler wandering into town. What would he or she need besides a warm feeling that they were welcome? How to help the new to your area tourists not waste their short time and hard earned dollars in your Maine home town? Showcasing what there is to do for fun wherever you live in Maine is huge.
So much on the list may not be your personal favorite but what do the vacation audience members want to achieve from this vacation getaway stay?
See sunrises, sunsets like no other. Meet a Maine moose, see a bald eagle, strap on a bib to eat a steamed lobster. Sample a whoopie pie or slice of blueberry filled anything. Pick up souvenirs with Maine splashed across them.
Waterfront Maine Vacations Are The Most Memorable!
How to get a Maine tourist to stick around for a stretch of days and to return for more?
To share their enjoyment with their inner circle of friends to expand on the local Maine tourism traffic to your zip code. Regional tourism and helping tourist travelers “build” an itinerary that includes more than just your corner of Maine is how state tourism dollars increase.
I just got back from a vacation to London England and Edinburgh Scotland.

Meg, her mom and I learned a lot and got lots of exercise. How each tourism stop markets itself observed. Online and after you get there. Do you get a sense that the tour operator, restaurant, lodge owner has hospitality training?
Tower Bridge London England Toured On Recent Europe Vacation.
Is the individual providing the service you need? Or on their phone more than spending time with the “how can I help you?”. Meg and I did a lot of planning online and sorted through a lot of marketing, reviews, eyeball the media available. Again, what to do for fun is not the same list of responses for everyone polled.
Maine vacations are hard to beat and this is where our heart is.
The trip to cross the pond flying Delta to London England and Virgin Airlines back to the Logan Airport in Boston MA was different too.
Not because of jet lag or lack of hydration or sleep. Did it by the book. But like the flight experience, the dining, train travel, the museums, historical and scenery experience were not the same either. Like a movie or book you remember for days after you finish it. There is a reason why and all of us harvest different take aways looking back on any vacation.

Train Travel On Vacation in Scotland.
In between hearing Scottish local historic information about the clans, Paul was awesome. All the information served up from a Scotsman while driving the bus along the highland country sides dotted with sheep. There was music. Fill from Paul’s playlist shared with our group added to the local Scottish immersion.
The Chieftains, Proclaimers, Annie Lennox, Simple Minds and other artists on the small bus ride with the panoramic windows made it memorable. We were not in Kansas or Maine or stateside anymore.
Ran into one fellow wearing a kilt who we asked are you cold? He smiled and quickly retorted “it’s not cold, this is Scotland”. Overall the weather was a lot warmer than everyone in London and Edinburgh remembers just like here in the Maine.
Edinburgh Castle View In Edinburgh Scotland.
This trip made me really think about the new to Maine traveler and all the maps, GPS tools available to guide them.
And in my small town in Northern Maine, how to beef up the technology to create a digital guide to help travelers more completely.
The reviews on places to stay, the Maine attractions, where to eat, etc are all well and good. There are lots of happy, crabby and in between remarks and tourism propaganda to sort through building your Maine vacation experience. But what are your expectations and are they reasonable for the time and money available?
Everyone who lives, works and plays in Maine wears a tourism fire in my belly hat. Or should.

That is a big part of what the Me In Maine blog is all about right? To help shape vacations in Maine for others looking for rest, relaxation, entertainment, culinary delight. And to save them money in the process to help assure the Maine vacation is the best it can be.
All the locals pitch in and because we are not over crowded or withdrawn, the travel to Maine is a lot more relaxed for everyone involved.
Low population and less online to glean and study forces small town Maine vacations to be kept simple.

This section of Maine has a major pull for instate and out of state residents alike. Over the weekend, headed out Friday night from “The County” to zip to Wells Beach, Maine. Then get up early to beeline to Pease Air Force Base For an airshow.

Fly Over, Pease Air Force Base New Hampshire B-52H Display. Part Of Food, Fun, Flight, Force At Thunder Over New Hampshire Air Show.
So back to Thunder Over New Hampshire highlights. The Saturday weather was perfect, hot and clear to see the aviation acrobats overhead. I wondered about Sunday being cloudy and cooler if that impacted the overhead oohs and ahhs.
Seeing a B-52H up close and using the 185′ wingspan as shade overhead while munching on cheeseburgers and cheese nachos. My first big airshow and everything unfolded overhead in front of us.
Air Plane Jet 5-52 Specs At Thunder Over New Hampshire Air Show.
Families with connections to the military and lots of younger cadets starting their service careers helping out running the event. It was neat to see all ages, their t-shirts to give you a hint of why they came to the air show event at Pease Air Force Base.
I wondered if the particular B-52H sitting next to the runway might have been stationed years ago at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone Maine.
The placard spelled out the B-52’s entered service of the skies around 1961 while Loring AFB was in full swing as a SAC base. Loring was 9472 acres of military secrets that closed September 1994.This B-52H pictured is stationed in Louisiana and on loan like the helicopters, other aircraft on display. Or put to the test in the air over Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire this past weekend.
The Loring AFB closure hit the economy of Northern Maine very hard and in some respects, Aroostook County is still recovering for the population loss.

Mini vacations in Maine, Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery ME.
Maine is a big state. But when you live here full time, exploring every nook and cranny happens. Return trips to parts of Maine that hit you deep inside are common.
Metal Extension Is No Longer On Whaleback Lighthouse, Kittery Maine
This blog post about a weekend getaway heading from Houlton Maine south on I-95 to visit a new granddaughter, a tad older grandson in the Boston MA area.
The travel distance, how far away in Maine is everything? This time of year it depends on the weather forecast on actual travel times for safety sake, not just the mileage.
If you have followed the Me In Maine blog, lighthouses are always a stable to cover.
The state tourism folks say there are 65 lighthouses in Maine. I always thought the number was 68 Maine lighthouses. Somehow Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery ME escaped coverage. Once you start collecting them for photo and video capture, you realize one thing.
Some are easy peasy or very hard to access in the collection of Maine lighthouses.
Not the prettiest of lighthouses in Maine, Whaleback is made of granite blocks.
I think West Quoddy lighthouse in Lubec with the red stripes is the most attractive. Whaleback Lighthouse is at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor. Started in 1829 and finished the next year, Whaleback Lighthouse set Uncle Sam back $21,000.
Then over two years starting in 1870, a new better built version of Whaleback lighthouse was constructed.
The Maine lighthouse had a cast iron fog signal attached seen in the black and white image. The metal addition did not improve her looks but with lighthouses in Maine, the purpose in communications is far more important than glamour.
The original lighthouse had poor construction but also is in a location hammered by the ocean waves at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor. Probably could use a breakwater to help buffer the pressure from wind, water, ice.
Some Maine lighthouses are far far out to sea.
You need a Maine lobster boat or ferry ride to access. Or they are on an island close to the mainland parked at the harbor entrance but facing the Atlantic Ocean. From the shore these lighthouses not visible from shore. This is like the location of the lighthouse in Cutler Maine, Little River lighthouse.
Whaleback lighthouse is just off shore and Portland head light has just as convenient drive to easy access where to put your car.
Just park it and enjoy your walk around the trails. The areas of both Whaleback and Portland head light utilized as former forts to defend the Maine coastal regions from intruder attack. Used as observation points. To detect any possible hostile enemy force floating in hoping to be undetected from the seaward approach.
Can you imagine the lonely but important life signalling dangers in all kinds of Maine weather living in a lighthouse? With only ledge rocks and pounding waves rocking your small tight quarters and supplying all that ice cold sea spray.
You have to be able to entertain yourself with a good book or strive to be a writer, a painter.
To capture the experience off the coast of Maine calling a lighthouse home sweet home. The lighthouses with some patch of dirt surrounding them were often farmed.
Your own farm fresh local eggs, small animals and a modest harvest from the lighthouse garden soil.
Can you imagine life as a Maine lighthouse keeper? One lighthouse keeper I read about bought a piano for his wife’s entertainment. But only one sheet of music could defeat the purpose and cause emotions to rise in the solitude and a single tune over and over. Could too much peace and quiet most of the time challenge your sanity?

But this summer’s vacation visit makes me realize forget buying at the top of the Maine real estate market.
Too little to pick from and high priced means time for real estate market study of neighborhoods and housing stock. But apply lots of impulse control in the real estate spending department.
To spend some time vacationing in a new region of Maine but making it a property investment at the same time. Knowing others would rent out what you purchase as long as their health allows. The same people taking the exact amount of days to vacation in the same section of the calendar annually is pretty common.
