Maine Organic Farmers Gardeners Association Farmer To Farmer Conference

The MOFGA Farmer to Farmer conference held over the past weekend in Portland Maine.

MOFGA, the Maine Organic Farmers Gardeners Association offered 30 education sessions at the Portland Holiday Inn By The Bay.

Here is the rundown of the 2026 Farmer to Farmer sessions offered.

Jim And Howard Debate Best Organic Farming Practices And Network. I Learned A Lot About Why My Farm Apple Orchard Is Meh And How To Revive Organically.

The Farmer to Farmer conference kicked off with a farm tour of North Spore Mushroom facility.

Sorry, no photos allowed at the 25,000 square foot facility that provides spawn to dozens of farms around the county. Saw the labs, steamers, all the stages of creating mushroom substrate and learned much about the health benefits.

After learning about mushrooms we walked over to a meet and greet hospitality social at Allagash Brewing.

Networking is critical to make organic farming sustainable and viable.

Meg my life partner invited me to tag along to Maine’s largest city and beef up my organic farming knowledge at this year’s MOFGA Farmer To Farmer Conference.

She is co owner of Nature’s Circle Farm with her Dad Richard York.

Her organic farming experience all started in 1996 from a small humble produce veggie stand. Nature’s Circle Farm, based in New Limerick Maine grew to an over  400 acre full time Maine organic farm spread.

Meg, her Dad and crew raise, store, ship fresh market organic produce. Nature’s Circle Farms also selling over 20 varieties of Maine organic seed potato stock from their Aroostook County fields.

The MOFGA conference happened during the super bowl and watching the Patriots lose on the big screen did not damper the enthusiasm of organic produces.

When you own and are totally invested in a small organic family farm in Maine, time spent fretting about who won or lost a sporting event is not the end of the World.

Ever thought about starting a small Maine farm?

Your family, chores around the Maine organic farm to keep it vibrant and sustainable suddenly more important.

The conference jam packed with worthwhile education sessions on everything from where to get grant moneys, new markets for your produce, how to deal best with the pesky Colorado potato beetle and more.

Black Garlic, It’s Popular. Ever Tried It? Howard Explains How It Is Produced And Distributed By The High Meadows Farm Truck.

A half acre organic farm and expansion to an acre may sound small potatoes.

But rich well nurtured farm soil can produce thousands of pounds of organic food with careful year round prep work. It’s not just creating a big crop and develop markets to sell it. Soil health, protecting the river or waterfront you border is key to eliminate erosion. Appreciation and protection of nature is always a concern of every Maine organic farmer or gardener. Farmer to farmer meetings help keep the dream a reality around Maine.

    No Farmer, No Food.

I have read about food insecurity and that up to a third of the food produced does not get consumed.

In Maine, when you think about all the school cafeterias, the colleges, prisons, the big consumers of shipped in produce, you have to wonder. Why can’t we funnel Maine organic locally sourced wholesome food to these food stream consumers?

The need for a processor to peel the squash, to cube it and fresh freeze to be ready to quick and easy prepare it is part of what’s missing.

Community freezers, coordination with legislators, and a grass roots passion to help stop wasting food and help the small Maine farmer at the same time is key.

Shout it out. make some noise.

Let’s clean up the plate and not scrape it into the garbage stream.

Where you shop, do you get the impression local matters and the suggestion area farmers are able to peddle their crops at the Piggly Wiggly?

Do they really or are some of the grocery store posters and propaganda on their websites from long ago and faded?

Not a grow it and we will give you shelf space to get it placed from the farm to the family table practiced for local shoppers where you stock up on groceries?

Is there a strong current grocer to local Maine farmer connection underway?

Maine Is Farming, Lots Of Woods, Rich But Simple All Natural Living.

There should be and speak up for fresher, cheaper, locally sourced Maine farm food that is not trucked in from many time zones away.

Pulled locally and not from out west or out of the country.

Let where you push the wire cart with the squeaky wheel know you noticed and ask them why local growers are replaced with far away from who knows where producers.

Support local Maine farmers, organic and conventional or everyone misses out from the farm to table nutritious habit at family meal time.

Thought of purchasing a small Maine farm?

Here’s one farm property that was just listed in Northern Maine with 36.5 manageable acres.

Horse around, have critters and crops. Could you do it? Serving up what you grow and bartering with other local producers for what you don’t. It’s a lot of work and you have to be healthy. Starting out it helps to have savings, a nest egg.

Or someone holds down a real job to tame and flatten the peaks and valleys when operating a small Maine family farm.

Maine real estate is my real job but growing up on a farm and owning one is a passion too. Thank you for sticking around, reading until the very end. I appreciate you out in the blogging audience and here for suggestions on blog posts you want to see all about Maine.

Maine Loaded With Over 4600, Vinalhaven The Biggest Off Shore Island

    Vinalhaven Island in Penobscot Bay.

Consider you have power half the time on a Maine island parked twelve to fifteen miles off the coast of Rockland in Knox County.

    fox islands maine
Vinalhaven And North Haven Are The Fox Islands In Penobscot Bay, Know County Maine.

Literally every six hours, one side of your island is energized. Then the next half dozen hours, where you live or work you are on own in the dark. Left to your own devices.

The old diesel generator taking turns feeding power to each half of the Maine island is bone tired. But the other two generators in the fleet sharing the electricity production task load died.

Help is on the way but fails to show up so deal with it.

Mainers are resourceful. Grateful for what we do have and working around the daily obstacles thrown in our pathway.

This week, I had a Maine real estate closing with a widow who’s husband grew up on Vinalhaven Maine island.

    maine coastal harbor boats
No Bridge Connecting Your ME Island To The Mainland? It’s All About Boat Transportation Using Watery Highways. The Ferry Runs If The Weather Cooperates.

John had a lobster boat. Grew up in the fishing village off the coast in Knox County Maine. Breaking down way way out to sea off the coast of Maine happens in choppy sea swells. You get a call, I need help.

Another lobster boat in the dark heads out to rescue tow you back into the Maine island harbor.

Do you think about the waves, the cold frigid temperatures, the danger that some hardworking Mainers face every day?

Miles of shore in the dark in a bobby lobster boat that’s engine quit. Hoping the your radio does not quit too.

Her story hit home. And having babies, raising kids on an island where maybe you can use the ferry.

Or maybe the sea and weather conditions are not just right. And you are stuck on the island for a time. Until the weather forecast conditions improve on your Maine island.

Vinalhaven has roughly 1200, North Haven about 350 of the same kind of friendly year-round individuals on their respective Fox islands.

If you are a regular follower of the Me In Maine blog, you know my fascination with lighthouses.

I am not alone and know others get excited out in the audience with the buzz words Maine lighthouses.

maine lighthouses, over 60 of them in vacationland
Perkins Island Lighthouse – Georgetown Maine. Pretty Red Lens To Warn Sailors About Rock Ledges. Ship Wrecks Are No Fun And Lighthouses Avoid Them.

And as luck would have it, Vinalhaven Maine has three lighthouses I don’t have in the photo collection. What are the Maine lighthouse trio? Brown’s light house. Heron Neck lighthouse. Saddleback Ledge lighthouse.

Each lighthouse helps nautical navigation around the Fox Islands of Vinalhaven and North Haven in Penobscot Bay off the coast of Maine.

There is a fourth Maine lighthouse for North Haven named Goose Rocks lighthouse.

Is the “old faithful” diesel generator still laboring, wheezing, doing it’s best to ration the Vinalhaven island’s electricity? No because three wind generators capable of 4.5 megawatts are now twirling overhead harnessing the breeze.

Spinning juice to supply more or less what Vinalhaven and North Haven needs.

The wind power generation project going online live in 2009. All the buzz of power managed by the Fox Islands Electric Cooperative.

Plus there is a submarine cable for power tether on the ocean floor like a giant extension cord to the main land just in case for electrical stability.

I will get to Vinalhaven Maine to collect a four pack of lighthouses to post in a future blog article.

Promise. To learn, share more about early days of Vinalhaven, one of the Fox Islands.

Complete with the rich history about First Nation Red People, granite for the Washington Monument and base of the Brooklyn Bridge. With more to come on  boat building, farming, lumbering, horse nets.

Vinalhaven has the distinction of being the first Maine island of lobstermen to unionize. Being 23 miles square.

A tight island community shaped by the rhythm of the tides, the pace of living depends on which season you land here.

Vinalhaven is Maine’s largest island off the mainland with no bridge connection. Could you live full time on a Maine island?

Maine has  4613 coastal islands in her collection to explore.

Vinalhaven Maine has access to much of the lobstering, fishing grounds in Penobscot Bay and further offshore waters.

Traveling To Augusta For Maine Agriculture Farm Trade Show

Climbing on Interstate 95 traveling to Augusta for Maine Agriculture Farm Trade show.

Yesterday hitched a ride with my partner Meg who is a New Limerick Maine organic farmer up here in Aroostook County. We climbed in the van and headed down I-95 to attend the Augusta Maine 85th agriculture farm trade show.

We met, listened to the Maine agriculture farm commissioner Amanda Beal.

Got to network with lots of other agriculture farm producers, talk to vendors at this 85th Maine agriculture farm trade show.

Attended a couple break out sessions to tackle farm operation problems everyone has to hunt down solutions for in Maine farming.

I love farming, grew up on one and still own the family agriculture spread where the four boys, my brothers and I were raised.

By renting out the Maine farm in the video for agriculture organic farming to Nature’s Circle farm, to Meg I can keep my hand in digging in the dirt.

The thing that hits you at the Maine farm trade show is how diverse, how small and precious the agriculture operations really are in Maine.

  • Peace. Stillness Of A Maine Winter

Peace. Stillness Of A Maine Winter

Cold fresh air, pure white snow of a Maine winter can do a body and mind good.

I remember as a kid the joy of bundling up, putting on hats and mittens hand knit by my mom. To head outside to dig impressive snow tunnels, to make snowmen with brothers, sisters, the neighborhood kids.

Playing in the outdoor fresh clean Maine winter air kept us healthier.

We did not, still don’t hibernate inside over a Maine winter.

Maine winters. Not counting the days on a calendar like a prison sentence sitting in a iron bar small space.

The crisp cold Maine winter air purifies and stimulates our white blood cell production. It is the shot in the arm that boosts our immune system.

Let’s snowmobile out to the lake ice shack and see what everyone’s up to this weekend.

Get off the couch, turn off the television, put down the cell phone device.

Go sliding with the kids. Support a local ski mountain or local ice rink.

The shoveling snow off the steps and clearing walkways, opening up driveways provides physical exercise that boosts our energy levels. Gets those endorphins pumping while filling our lungs with crisp clean fresh air.

Playing in the white flakes of snow, moving and handling it around our Maine homes got us outside.

Look what happened over night while sleeping. Wow.

Rotate slowly 360 degrees around you at the sparkling crystal outdoor landscape.

You become very aware of the World around you spending time outdoors in a Maine winter.

Living in rural areas of Maine. Growing up, we all had family jobs and responsibilities in rural Maine. Snow handling was one of them. But we also played in the fresh Maine snow powder.
