Why Moving To Maine? What’s The Attraction?

Get calls from Maine real estate buyers who need to invest in property someplace else that where they now live.

Maine, The Way Life Should Be. One Big State, Lots Of Special Hidden Areas To Discover.

Some are looking for a vacation home location and Maine scores top of the list.

    Moving to Maine.

Others just know they can not stay where they live now. Either to raise a family, run a business, to retire and enjoy the Golden Years as best they can.

Had a lady from Texas as a recent example who dreams of moving to Maine.

Getting Out Of The Maine Real Estate Office, Not Pinned To The Wall By A Desk. Lucky To Live In Maine Is How I Feel Every Day!

Her husband works for the phone company, she has MS and is from Maine.

Does not need a prepping on what it is like living in Maine.

The couple bought a house for around $150,000 years ago near Houston Texas that is now worth three times that figure.

“It’s too hot and burning up” is a remark I hear a lot these days and those exact words she shared with me on the phone today.

This lady says you know it is time to move when you come out of a big box store and your jeep is parked next to a Lamborghini on one side, a Maserati on the other.

There’s one of the signs. This couple in their early 60’s are looking to sell out and move away to get to Maine.

It’s not just the cost of living outside rural Maine that is nose bleed high pushing the pack up push back to relocate to “Vacationland”.

Maine is drop dead naturally gorgeous and a four season stunner.

The simple small town way of living in rural Maine is the hook, the carrot.

The communities, the people who live in small town Maine are the best. You wake up and wonder who plowed your driveway and have no idea. A casserole shows up with a hand written note “I know you are going through a tough time in your life and hope you like this covered dish at meal time.”.

Or “heard your mom had fallen and hope she is doing okay” is also on the same note.

In large over populated rush rush hurry scurry areas, kind gestures don’t happen like that. In small town rural Maine they do all the time.

Smaller group of people, friendly happens. More intimate, personal and friendly. Less crime, no traffic and lower cost of living kicks in living in rural Maine. High price of fuel oil or gas, no problem. Heat with renewable resource wood and warm as toast.

    maine outdoor community bands
Live Music, A Maine Community Band Supplies It Weekly For Free. That’s Maine.

Next year’s heating supply of wood is all cut, stacked, stored away. Mainers are more organized and well prepared. The root cellar in the home basement has canned fruits and vegetables. The chest freezer gets pulled from over the winter months.

A garden is a source of joy and tasty food your planted on your knees and kept weeded, watered, tended.

Sometimes searching online comes up with very little Chamber of Commerce type information blurbs.

    maine lake living
Hard To Stay Indoors For Long Living In Maine.

No chamber, low population and just not a lot to browse and consider in typical small rural Maine towns.

Or other times, lots of write up on many websites created that just miss the mark. What should happen is testimonials on why do you live in Maine? What makes you some kind of glad everyday you live in Maine? What is life like and what do you do for fun?

One website I stumbled upon tries to pick a region of Maine and showcase a “day in the life” there.

The hour by hour break down would not attract anyone to come to Maine let alone stay here. The same format write up but find a different local coffee shop, insert it.

Highlight the mill the local Maine native works at and mention how during break they take a walk to enjoy the outdoor location. That’s it. No images, no narrative written by the local native… just how someone outside Maine would describe what life is like. About as exciting as watching paint dry. It is obvious who threw together the copy does not feel grateful they live in Maine.

Living here, raising a family in Maine and enjoying four seasons of so much natural beauty is part of what pulls at a person’s heartstrings.

But the community spirit, the local population that steps up to help out and shares the same lucky to live in Maine attitude.

So many people in this World want to run far away to hide out somewhere, anywhere. Moving to Maine. Itching to run away and doing your home work on just where?

Maine, are you looking for small town friendly and real, wholesome, healthy?

    Dining, Walking The Old Port

    Dining, walking the Old Port.

This section of Maine has a major pull for instate and out of state residents alike. Over the weekend, headed out Friday night from “The County” to zip to Wells Beach, Maine. Then get up early to beeline to Pease Air Force Base For an airshow.

Love To Fly And It Shows? Thunder Over New Hampshire Air Show This Past Weekend!

Have been to smaller Maine airport fly ins and posted photos, videos, details before on this Maine blog.

    b-52 pease air force base
Fly Over, Pease Air Force Base New Hampshire B-52H Display. Part Of Food, Fun, Flight, Force At Thunder Over New Hampshire Air Show.

Fascination with flying started from stories my Dad told me about his Army Air Force missions as a B-24 Liberator tail gunner during World War Two.

Getting a part 107 FAA drone license helped the aviation bug to develop inside too.

So back to Thunder Over New Hampshire highlights. The Saturday weather was perfect, hot and clear to see the aviation acrobats overhead. I wondered about Sunday being cloudy and cooler if that impacted the overhead oohs and ahhs.

Seeing a B-52H up close and using the 185′ wingspan as shade overhead while munching on cheeseburgers and cheese nachos. My first big airshow and everything unfolded overhead in front of us.

    b-52-h specs

Families with connections to the military and lots of younger cadets starting their service careers helping out running the event. It was neat to see all ages, their t-shirts to give you a hint of why they came to the air show event at Pease Air Force Base.

I wondered if the particular B-52H sitting next to the runway might have been stationed years ago at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone Maine.

The placard spelled out the B-52’s entered service of the skies around 1961 while Loring AFB was in full swing as a SAC base. Loring was 9472 acres of military secrets that closed September 1994.This B-52H pictured is stationed in Louisiana and on loan like the helicopters, other aircraft on display. Or put to the test in the air over Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire this past weekend.

The Loring AFB closure hit the economy of Northern Maine very hard and in some respects, Aroostook County is still recovering for the population loss.

    Goose Rock Beach Maine.

Think one Maine beach is pretty much like another up here in Vacationland?

maine goose rocks fortune rocks beaches
Life Is A Beach Right? A Maine Beach Like Goose Rocks, Fortune Rocks in Kennebunkport ME!

Like people, soils, Maine beaches are different.

No the same. It’s not just the color and quality of the beach sand. It’s more than the amount of Maine beach frontage. The take away experience of any Maine beach is the way it is developed.

Goose Rock Beach in Maine is three miles long.

Whoa. That’s is one long stretch of Maine coast beach sand. Spacing is what hits you first blush with Goose Rock Beach in Maine.

    Maine Coastal Beach Real Estate,
Maine Coastal Beaches. Pretty Rare, Very Pricey. Goose Rock, Fortune Rock Beach A Great Investment. You Have To Wait For New Real Estate Listings.

The quaintness of the cottage and beach homes feels like a step back into time.

Vacationing up in Maine. Simplicity, well kept and quiet unlike wall to wall tourists when there are times where you feel you can not move. Or like you share the Maine beach with too many tourists and the resources are over taxed.

My partner has always loved Wells Beach Maine.

Going there as a young girl with her family for two week summer stints. We take yearly trips to Wells Beach continuing the tradition.

But the more time you spend in your “happy place” home away from home up in Maine, you branch out and explore. Really get to know a region of Maine and what is around it. Meg’s mom, sister Jessica went for a ride to seriously scope out nooks and crannies around Wells Beach Maine. All the kids and Meg had gone to Saco’s waterpark Fun Town Splash Town.

Goose Rock Beach was discovered and a return trip this past weekend felt like Wells Beach but transported back in time to the 1940’s, 1950’s period.

Prince Edward Island Canada can hit you with a similar feeling of nostalgia.

So Goose Rock Beach, what did we learn about this beach section of Kennbunkport, Maine?

(Sound of Maine map crinkling, unfolding.) Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are not one place.

Cape Porpoise is a section of Kennebunkport, Maine.

Fortune Rock Beach is in Biddeford, Maine is to the north, Wells Beach is to the south. Got your bearings yet? And you and I have not moved into all the islands off this section of Maine coast.

The woods and water for solitude in Maine have their own reward. Parked lakeside in Maine hits the soul. Waling a sandy beach or rocky shoreline with sea air and breeze. Hiking to the top of a mountain trail hits you deeply as you gaze out from peak perch.

There is nothing to compare with the Maine coastal beach sand, and rolling Atlantic Ocean waves in the “lobstah” state.

Part of it is more than the natural beauty setting. Add in the fresh seafood harvested fresh and local from deep blue and green water out front. And how hard the local property owners work to preserve and protect their piece of the Maine beach.

But underneath it all is like the trek to the Holy land. A deep spiritual emotion that wells up inside a person. Positioned near, on or in view the Maine ocean beach location for many is a mix of tradition, fond family memories.

The salt air, sea breeze, lobster boats, schooner sails and refreshing cold Maine coastal water provide life clarity.

  • Helpful, Handy, Humorous | Welcome To Maine

Helpful, Handy, Humorous | Welcome To Maine

Helpful, handy, humorous, welcome to Maine !

When you spend time in Maine on vacation, you pick up on how the local population natives interact. You sense how connected a small Maine community is and witness first hand “home town ” pride in everything on the local level.

    small town maine
What Is It Like In Maine? Home Town Proud Simple Living In Small Maine Communities.

    Mainers are helpful.

Lazy is not in the vocabulary and frowned on as not pulling your own weight. Maine families are raised to help out daily anyway they can. On the road, Maine motorists roll to a stop. Crank down the window and stop if your car is parked on a roadway to make sure you are okay. “Need me to jump start that dead battery for you or make a cell phone call?””Stuck in a snow bank and need a little tug to nudge you back on the highway?” “Run out of gas, need a lift, is everyone okay?” Or “lost, need directions?” It’s all about helpful, how can I help you living in small town Maine.

Hitting The Rec Trails In Maine All Four Seasons. That Is What It Is Like In Maine.

Maine local populations maybe small but provide large helpings of caring for others every day, any season.

You don’t have to know or be related to the person receiving the helpful attention either. I hear it all the time in my job as a Maine real estate broker that the local community members are so helpful and friendly. Yes they are but the question I ask “isn’t it like this where you live now?” More often than not, the response is no, no it is not.

    maine is farms, woodlots
Wide Open Space. More Farms, Wooded Land And Fewer People. That Is What It Is Like In Maine.

Less population is part of it. In crowded urban areas you keep to yourself, eyes forward, get from point A to B as quickly as possible without bother anyone. You hire everything done. In small Maine towns, people are concerned and worry about each other. Mainers are jack of all trades and pretty darn handy, helpful.

Your friends and neighbors get involved to give you a hand on projects in small town Maine.

Mainers know how to change their own oil, shingle a garage roof, replace the guts of a toilet to stop the waste of water. They mow their lawn and shovel their walkways, don’t hire it out. Independent, loaded with skills and a can do attitude. A group assembles quickly to help you get your winter wood cut, split, stored inside the shed or tucked away down in your Maine home cellar. Many hands do make light work in small town Maine.

Meet Neighbors, New Friends, See Family Members. Local Public Suppers That Kind Of Experience.

It’s also nice to know others care about you and check in if you were not at coffee at the local Maine diner this morning.

Or notice that they did not see you at the high school basketball game last night or at breakfast this morning at the local snowmobile club. We look for each other and come to the rescue when the burden gets too tough to carry in life. You give back because you have personally received over and over. You play it forward, you pay it back. That is what it is like in Maine.

Awareness of others in your area and a sense of volunteerism instilled in everyone raised in small town Maine.

Everyone pitches in and tries to help out to do what they can for the greater good. What is it like living in Maine? Simple, real, down to Earth.

    small town parades in maine

Common sense still used here and less games, more dedication to work hard through your troubles. Not blaming someone else or whining about how hard you have it. No time for feeling sorry for yourself. Pick yourself up by the bootstraps and taught early on to expect less from others and more from yourself really works. If it is to be, it is up to me.

Maine humor, not just the Downeast kind that can be dry and witty.

The “you can’t there from here” retort when asking directions and lost in Maine is well known. But the local expressions describing events unfolding around you. The woodlot for sale was cut so hard “a woodpecker would have to pack a lunch to make it across the acreage”. Colorful ways to converse in Maine keep it light and bright and cause a chuckle or smile.

    Small town Maine
What Is Is Like In Maine? Less Crowds, More Home Town Pride Common Sense Applied. Outdoors Every Day Of The Year Happens.

If the weather forecasts provides ten inches of new fresh white powdery snow, the native Mainer refers to it as “just a dusting”.

All of us living in Maine have a common task. To have a positive attitude and not be a wet blanket Debbie Downer. To try hard to see the humor in anything happening around you in life. It could always be worse. You and I are pretty lucky overall thinking. Hope, faith, keep at it and don’t give up or get discouraged.

    4th Of July In Maine

    4th of July In Maine.

Maine, what the COVID19 virus pandemic has shown the outside World, the locals. Internet technology demonstrates you can enjoy living in four seasons Maine. Get uncrowded nature rich Maine but work online. The best of both Worlds, Maine with all she offers that is unspoiled, rich and real. But promoting it and the providing the window dressing from a keyboard connected to a brain caffeinated on good hot black coffee.

Check Online, There Is Lots Happening For Deals With Maine Businesses During COVID19 Virus Pandemic.

Mainers are workers, bringing up the following generations to be the same and not get bogged down or depressed.

We’re not standing still or sitting on our hands waiting for the memo to get back to work. We treat life like a sport. Our attitude is everything in the how high do you want to score. It is up to us to be what we want to be. No one to blame for lack of effort but from within ourselves. In business it is all about making sure your online customers can window shop and be served up with what they need around the clock.COVID19 virus pandemic or not. Window dressing is not just fluff or a little thing. It is everything as we work together to prove the point.

If you feel a little divided like the nation with “Us” and over there “Them”. It’s times like these that we learn to live again as Bob Grohl in the Foo Fighters crooned. Let’s try the unplugged, acoustic version. The rest of the band. You guys and gals can take a break. Go make a call, check your email or visit the restroom. Smoke if you must or get a drink, score a snack. Vending machine slim Jim or Little Debbie’s oatmeal pie time. If the pickin’s are slim and everything at the lunch counter is off limits because it’s been closed for months. Hit it Bob.

Teach us how it is times like this we learn to live again video.

Maine, back to Earth and feet on the ground.

Reality time even if I am using a virtual kind blog posting. Your toes in the sand on a beach in Maine. This 4th of July in Maine weekend. More than ever I feel so lucky to live in Maine. This is the right place for all the reasons any season. For me it’s all the boxes checked off especially during times like these when we re-invent and learn to live again. Prioritizing, soul searching, limited in some ways to create space to fill it with what is worthwhile and probably missing. I feel living in small town rural Maine gives us a better frame of mind and healthier attitude because we are prepared for times like these.

    working together in maine
Maine, Shoulder To Shoulder Working Together. Stay Safe During COVID19 Virus Pandemic.

The cyber reality of the virtual World when the 4th of July in Maine rolls around again.

Casting your net for customers using a greater reach, a healthy frequency of your marketing message. It was already happening as small Maine town economies struggle with the lack of volume needed to monetize a business. We all know that anything open for business that is not is doomed. Like an operation taking too long and the patient under the knife developing other complications beyond the main purpose of scrubbing thorough and putting on the mask, gloves, surgical gown.

A Maine business peddling a product or a service won’t survive idle and with the front doors locked.

Or even open but operating in the red ink or below capacity needed to make a healthy profit. The stop to celebrate the nation’s independence is a little different this year because not everyone feels so free and easy. Public safety and curbing the COVID19 virus adds a speed bump to the 4th of July festivities. A self imposed governor on moderation times one hundred is something new to the younger half of the population used to go go go. But something easier to swallow when you see the bigger picture and have weathered other life storms in Maine and come out the better for them.

This July 4th celebration in Maine took a step back and was without the local state fair, the parade the way we remember it.

But fireworks happened in my hometown from the top of Drakes Hill. Everyone kept their safe respectful distances and made it work. instead of crowding into community park, it was come as you are. Launched on the highest local peak and small scattered gatherings here and there to see the rocket’s red and other color glare. Capturing some of the tradition and all the appreciation for living in Maine full time.

Here’s what a normal 4th of July local parade in Maine looks like.

4th of July Parade In Maine

Sure I miss our local state Fair, the midway rides and games of chance, the agricultural exhibits.

The two Italian greasy tasty sausages going in and coming out of demolition derby. Served up from carny workers loading them to overflowing with all the onions, peppers, other mystery ingredients. No, they’re probably are not good for your body but once a year can’t shorten your life that much right? You gotta live and life is short. Maine, the way life should be is what the slogan promised. Just easy does it on the back and forth trips.

Shuttered, idled, not everything is live and operating today in Maine.

But the plan is if we all do our part and stay solid, this too shall pass. Better sooner than later. Patience, appreciation for what we still have, what we did have that will return in time. Somethings trapped in time and maybe not to return. It’s all good and up to us to stay positive for the greater good and our own quality of life. We are all going through this tunnel ride and will come out the other side with new ideas, lots of memories and stronger for the experience thrust upon us.

Maine has more second homes for vacation and rental use than any other state.

Many flocked to those Maine homes to quarantined for two weeks all my their lonesome and to shelter in place while working online from these Maine locations. Or producing your COVID19 negative test done in the last 72 hours for admission across the big green bridge. My philosophy is any of the customers I need are only 15 seconds away. Logging on and plugging in to tap the selection thanks to websites and blog posts and video channels. To learn about the simple Maine lifestyle. To appreciate the resourcefulness of down to Earth and life seasoned true Mainers. More people than ever have discovered the secret of Maine’s magic. It starts on short vacation exposure, ends up with buying Maine real estate.

The full time, possibly a life long native Mainer.

A little crusty, a lot outspoken but sharing the wisdom learned from personal experiences and meant without malice. Distilled in the heart. Common sense, Yankee ingenuity still reins supreme and life goes on. Steady the course and see the other end of any life struggle. Me In Maine blog post readers, thank you for your loyally and tuning in to follow our work. Stay tough, stay tuned and share what you have learned from this COVID19 virus pandemic experience. A sense of humor helps and banding together proving we are not in this alone.

Comedian Bob Marley helps NewsCenter 6 with the Maine weather forecasting video.

Most I know figure we are the lucky ones when you add up the score at the end of the day.

Compared to most, Maine is the place you would want to be harboring while the World adjusts to new events and health protocols that impact our economy in new ways. The worse thing you can do is perpetuate the “Us’ and “Them”. Search for unity and build something worthwhile should be the focus and channel for all our collective energies right?

If Maine tourism is not slammed and raking in the out of state dollars, retool and work on your operation to prepare for when “it’s BBbbackkkkk”. Adjust your sales and create new markets to take the place of dormant ones. Lots of local Maine businesses are right out straight but the focus is live and local. Supplementing with online virtual scores where you may doze but you never close as the sole proprietor and many family home grown operations.

Small town Maine is back, reversing the migration.

Everyone realizing everything you really need and cherish is right here in Maine. Small town Maine is grass roots, intimate and built from scratch by your friends and neighbors banding together to create something unique. Blood, sweat and tears invested when corporate dollars are no where in sight. Because this is too small an economic landscape to exploit dollar wise. In small Maine towns, you don’t pay your price of admission and just attend an event.

You are working months before behind the scenes and sleeves rolled up laboring to make it happen along with others in your small Maine town.

Meeting year round and when snow banks line the roadways or leafs are piling up needing to be raked. That is Maine home town pride that runs deeper than what you feel lost in the city and sharing everything with just too many people. Large scale is not small town Maine where you know most of the people. Maine is like you are one big small town family. So COVID19 does not defeat the little Maine towns that dot the landscape in Vacationland.

Long before the Cononovirus hit Maine a few months back, other economic struggles forced the focus on looking for waste, taking up slack.

Reducing duplication of services and studying school education services in new and not so popular ways. This Coronvirus just added a new wrinkle and hammered away at the important point of Internet connectivity is everything for survival in Maine. I like to think our set of life skills is greater, our attitude more positive to avoid getting bogged down and discouraged. We don’t stay down long and have experience with setbacks.

Money does not grow on trees and barter for exchange of goods and services happens all around us.

It is cheaper to live here when your shelter is paid for, your food is home grown and local and money is not so darn important. Not used to impress anyone because we know better. Parked for a rainy day you expect to happen makes you better prepared and not flying by the seat of your pants. Our entertainment is low or no cost too here in Maine. It’s unspoiled, pure and all natural. No make up or spin needed. Drop dead gorgeous all day long.

Folks now more than ever want to telecommute to their online job working remotely in Maine if the connection is loud and strong and consistent.

If you are one of the lucky ones who live here full time in Maine, you know we’ll tough it out. Hunker down, making the most of it. It’s still wicked good in Maine. • Marbles In Maine

    Marbles In Maine

Marbles in Maine, the glass ones started showing up in the 1890’s.

But marbles made of well, marble… and alabaster around two hundred years before that. Winning, losing, coming out even in marble games is no new trending fad. Marble games played since the 13th century. That’s all long long before Maine became a state. Marbles made out of wood, clay, stone not the pretty hot molten glass with us for thousands of years.

I had not thought of marbles in Maine much until this week when a real estate buyer of a waterfront camp on East Grand told me about the owner.

She was a Crocker from Danforth Maine and the lake property owner grew up in the same northern most Washington County town. In admiration and without spite or malice, the buyer dubbed the seller as one heck of a marble player. In small Maine towns, your brother or sister often in a class with most of your friend’s family members. The connection is second, third tier but still there. If you go back far enough in the DNA, someone’s grandmother married your second cousin happens. In small Maine towns, people are more aware of the connection to others in it. When the circle of people is smaller, the connection is stronger.

He was the small Maine town version of a pin ball wizard except we’re talking marbles.

Kenny the seller was not and still is not blind, deaf and dumb. All the marbles, winner takes all. That’s what he was known for in these parts. Winning big and often reported Simone the lake property buyer. He sure played a mean game of marbles.

I asked the seller during property price negotiations back and forth this week about his marble playing prowess.

Like most things in life, it boils down to a matter of sheer practice and time put into the endeavor. He laughed and asked what did she tell you? I said only that he was Mr. Marble King. His legend preceded him. That her brothers, all the young lads in her same small Maine town would gather somewhere to play marbles.

Not just during school recess at the East Grand Elementary, but traipsing over for the off hours marble games.

In the evenings, on the weekends, marble playing tournaments were underway somewhere but she could not remember where in town. Just recalling her brothers and his friends disappeared to play marble games.

Kenny, the seller, added to the local story on marbles in Maine games.

He said everyone gathered at his house on Weatherbee Street because there was a dirt floor basement. Ideal conditions for the kind of marble games played down cellar in privacy. Unlike the ones I remember played out in the open during school recess. Nothing elaborate but every kid had a marble bag or metal coffee can with a hole in the plastic lid.

The Wytopitlock, a small town near Danforth but in the County of Aroostook not Washington was heavy on horse shoes.

Under the lights at night, up to 200 horse show players would compete in games to hit the stakes. To land the leaners and ringers at the Wytopitlock Maine Fish and Game. Card games like cribbage “uptah camp in Maine” are an excellent way to pass the time while conversations take place during the 15-2 and more pegging. Simple living in Maine with a cozy wood fire, good company and something ahead for home cooked dining. That’s more than enough to make you feel very lucky to be alive and living in Maine.

Playing odd or even and the other person tried to guess to win or lose whatever was in your hand for the Maine marble wager.

Another marble game called simply Dropsies. Where the player stood over the can placed on the ground or just a lone marble out in the open and waiting. For whoever’s turn it was to with one eye closed and the other lining up the marble dropped with precision from waist high. To hopefully hit the can lid hole or strike the marble on the ground.  The video below shows how serious the marble players are in and out of the circle aiming and shooting strategizing. (more…)
