    Blogging About Maine Winter Weather

When you start a blog about Maine, there is no shortage of topics to hunt peck post.

Maine offers so many daily opportunities to collect and post photos, videos and simple daily experiences collected to share from around unspoiled Vacationland.

What’s It Like In Small Town Maine Rural Locations? Each One Shines Uniquely, Brightly.

These Maine images say a lot more than anything a typewriter tries to express. The small rural communities in Maine have plenty of neat activities and beautiful settings to promote but are often the best kept secret! Not a lot of press in small Maine communities.

Over the years, the travel blog posts to here and there around the state of Maine have been the easiest installments to create.

Go to some new location, sample the food, see the sights and post the photos with local copy on what this corner of Maine is like. So much to experience in Maine and it involves a little traveling even when you live instate!

Winter In Maine, We Are Outdoors Every Day, All Year Long.

But I think the meatiest ones are sheer FAQ.

You and I search for information daily and notice the questions asked around any query.  To me, those frequently asked questions are the meat and potatoes of any blog about Maine.

I am lucky to live here and have past and present experiences to draw from whenever it’s time to feed the blog. But the questions asked by folks who do live here and have limited knowledge about Maine are the hungriest blog post readers.

So here goes for a Me In Maine newest blog post about a couple FAQ.

What are our winters like in Maine?

    winter walking in maine
Who’s Walking Who? Maine Winter Stroll With Dog, The Owner.

This Maine weather question comes up daily and the answer for it is no longer cut and dry.

I used to carefully explain up here in Maine there are no polar bears, no one lives in igloos. That we are not amateurs handling winter snow in Maine.

Basically, explaining the stories about winter snow and temperatures in Maine are grossly exaggerated.

maine golf courses don't get a lot of use in winter
Maine Winter, The Golfing Is Usually Done By Snow Birds Who Beat Feet South Where A Snow Shovel Not Needed.

Why does Maine winters get the harsh press?

Because many who do not live in Maine and never experienced a winter just repeat what they heard or fear.

For starters, Maine winter snow is a big part of the economy.

    maine winter new snow

When no snow shows up, harder to attract the Maine snowmobilers.

Hard to groom winter snow sled trails without accumulations of the white stuff.

You can make snow at Maine ski areas but it adds to the overhead costs.

    maine winter homes
Maine Winter Homes, Snow Has To Be Managed, Plowed, Shoveled.

Man made is not the same as homemade courtesy of Mother Nature and Jack Frost working in tandem.

Those spreading the bad press about Maine winter weather need to consider a few things. First, how you dress is a big part of how comfortable any season in Maine is. Second, the weather patterns in Maine have changed our winters.

Lack of snow, warmer temperatures during Maine winters have seriously changed the season.

So daily I explain Maine winters were never as bad as many portrayed. That we are outdoors daily in Maine all year long. That you dress for the occasion here in Maine. And if you cross country ski, snowshoe, etc you have to be careful not to be over dressed.

    mt katahdin maine

And last but not least, our Maine winters are tamer and lost some of the crisp clean and clear air bite.

The state of Maine just does not get the snow accumulations and colder temperatures to keep it around over the winter months.

So does Maine have four seasons? Sure does. Some would argue there is a fifth one, mud season.

    Are winters harsh in Maine?

Not if you dress for them, prepare for them and tackle them like a boy or girl scout to be prepared.

What state has the worst winters?

Not Maine. I can only tell you from experience in Maine and not venturing out on a limb to judge other states, areas I know zip about. Have spent some time in Colorado and the terrain adds to the snowy adventure.

Once all the weather in Maine questions are addressed, we move on to what the pay scale is like?

How do people make a living in Maine. Like the weather, I have to explain how simple living in Maine works.

You live your life easy does it in Maine and savor the outdoors, woods, wildlife, waterfront and nature.

Others around you who feel the same way and respect the environment. Are good stewards of the land and pass it on in as good or even better shape than they received it.

This attitude and approach to life helps shape how you chose to live it in Maine. We deal with anything that comes down the pike. Take it in stride and prepare for all possible outcomes.

Mainers expect there is going to be adjustment and corrections necessary in our day to day living.

Maybe it is the weather that sets the ground rules of preparation, expectation living in Maine. Have your own set of questions or concerns about Maine? Reach out, here to help and let’s talk! Email, text, come visit us and start the communication connection.

  • When The Red In The Temperature Tube Rises, When Maine Humidity Happens.

When The Red In The Temperature Tube Rises, When Maine Humidity Happens.

Humidity in a Maine weather forecast.

When it happens you feel droggy, sluggish, out of sorts. Not on the top of your game. Not as productive as you are used to being each day. Lack of sleep when it gets hot and humid takes it toll. Being a little edgy, with a hair trigger for some people’s crank factor. Irritability happens when a busy hard working Mainer is not able to crank out the same work load as they are used to doing daily. You feel a sense of getting behind in the sweltering crush of heat. The lack of motivation feels like you slipped on cement shoes.

    maine cats in vegetation
Easy Does, Everyone Is Not Strung Out, Including The Animals. Plenty Of Elbow Room, Living Space Does That! Get To Maine For A Sample. Humidity Though Hits Those With Permanent Fur Coats The Hardest In A Maine Summer.

Humidity is not the norm in Maine weather climate patterns.

You could say most Mainers are pretty heat intolerant. And unless the individual has a medical condition where poor circulation keeps them craving heat all year round, most prefer our weather to be a little on the cool side over hot, hot, hot. A breeze adds to the comfort level inside and outside to keep the air moving and not becoming heavy or stagnant.

When the humidity increases, the productivity of Mainers suffers. You don’t feel good and at first wonder is something wrong medically. When it dawns on you, this is one of the few days or short spells of high humidity that is like a lead blanket heavy. That slows you down when you are used to accomplishing much around your property or when you are physically laboring for a living. Being on a black asphalt shingled roof and replacing the old shingles with new ones is not fun when the perspiration water is gushing off you or blurring your vision. Relief from the heat starts with opening up a Maine home in the early morning hours when Mother Nature allows a temporary cease fire.

Some folks are affected by the humidity more than others.

    Wells Beach Maine
Fresh Air, Working The Sand As Early Masons On A Maine Beach.

COPD makes catching your breath even hard when the heat index, ozone alert, humidity rises. No one likes the feeling of just getting out of the morning shower or taking a refreshing dip in a Maine lake and for a time feeling bright eyed and bushy tailed. And then it happens. Within ten minutes of leaving for work or to explore Maine on a vacation you feel like you desperately need another shower or a repeat dunking in the waterfront to cool off and back up to restart the day. Because we get little humidity in the summer living and due to winter being a dry not wet or moist cold, our practice with the water laden air is limited.

It does not take long. You do quickly remember how much one does not enjoy the uncomfortable feeling of sweating and trying to shed any unnecessary clothing. Of staying hydrated and if you are lucky enough, being able to stay close to the waterfront to get in, get out. To stay refreshed until the spell of humid weather in Maine passes. To head for the beaches in Maine.

So Maine is as a rule not a humid state and unlike many southern locals that experience the worst side of global warming.

To make an already hot unbearable area more difficult. Hiding out in air conditioning is a temporary fix but being cooped up inside can make a true Mainer feel like a caged animal. Because any of the four seasons, we are outside more than inside four walls. More on Maine’s weather, climate, topography.

So this time of year, because of humidity, in my day job I see a lot of reasons to move to Maine being because of less people, less humidity. And like this email this morning from a West Virginia real estate buyer, these are some additional concerns listed out in an email. Read on ….

    “Hello,

My family and business have decided to move out of West Virginia. We chose WV 18 years ago because of its remote wilderness. We are a family of blacksmiths/artisans who specialize in forging hunting, kitchen, & historically themed knives, carved drinking horns, & other marketable art. We raise goats, hunt, fish, & generally attempt to live self- sufficiently.

We travel along the East Coast of the US to Scottish & other festivals for income. Unfortunately, WV has now removed all of their pollution controls, while introducing more toxic industry & soliciting toxic waste dumping from the surrounding region. Fracking is affecting the wells & new pipelines are coming in nearby. (One of them recently exploded & was on national news.) The fish are toxic, & the deer are dying of strange diseases that are chemically induced. Cancer rates are rising quickly, & part of the local construction boom is to build cancer clinics. I don’t want my 2 young grandkids to die of cancer.

We are getting out of here.

I’m just starting to research where to go that is conducive to our lifestyle & preferences.

We’re looking for acreage, not too huge, but enough to set up our homestead, workshop, forge, & run a small goat herd & garden. Road accessibility, well, & power would be necessary. We don’t want any nearby power plants, toxic industry, pipelines, mining, gas or oil drilling, or runoff that might affect our health, nor that of the local wildlife that we would eat. We don’t want wind farms within visibility or earshot. No giant power lines either.

We prefer to not be downstream from a large dam, nor to be in a flood zone. We don’t want to be in an area prone to wildfires. We don’t care about having TV or shopping malls although cell phone/internet signal would be necessary to run our business. We home school the grand kids. A nearby town would be good so they can go to the library & 4H club & etc. Emergency medical services within half an hour or so, & a bigger hospital within about 2 hours drive would be ideal.

Our business is conducive to having a small tourist-oriented specialty store as well. We are nice, friendly, down to earth, functional folks with skills. We’re independent thinkers, not fanatical in any direction.

If we can find something suitable, our chiropractor’s family wants to move also, with similar criteria. We would like to make this transition within the next few years.

If you can help us toward this, please let me know.

    Thanks so much!”

Maine Vacations. Like Vitamins, You Need To Take More Than One A Year In Vacationland.

Folks seek out Maine’s fresh air, clean water and lower population because where they live now it lacks all three. Space, freedom to get away from dinky plots of land all walled in with spite fences and legal squabbles. To get away from the high traffic and even higher cost of living with all the layers of players that push and pull the permit regulation levers.

Cool off, beat the humidity heat. Hit the Maine waterfront.

Sit a spell on an open or screened porch with a summer breeze. Dig out the big air circulating fans, lift and tuck in the air condition with a careful heave ho. Into the best window in the Maine home for comfort, relief from the heat and humidity index. Reach into the ice box for a treat. Or down below for an iced tea, barley pop, a tall cool glass of ice cube loaded punch.

Maine is a great place to live if you can make a living. If you hold your horses on spending and make it easy does it slow as you go when you open your wallet or purse. If you learn how to work harder earlier in the day when it is hot and the farm hay has to be cut, conditioned, baled and stored in a barn facility. But make sure the moisture content of the hay is not too high to cause the fodder to heat up and burn down your Maine farm barn from spontaneous combustion.

A bolt of lighting from a crashing thunderstorm that cools the air dramatically. But means don’t be sitting in an aluminum canoe out in the middle of a Maine lake when those dark clouds swiftly roll overhead obscuring the sun. And the wind picks up considerable. Or don’t be unlucky enough to be out on the golf course swinging a metal club that only serves to attract a crackling bolt of lightning from overhead during the hottest stretch of a Maine summer. Have you been to Maine yet this summer and what are your plans for something new or an old familiar haunt to return to because it is a family tradition passed on to the younger generation?

How it works. How to reset and regroup. More on simple living in Maine.

  • Weather, We Gets Lots Of It In Maine.

What is the weather in Maine going to be like later today, tomorrow, next week?

May seem to beg the response why don’t you just wait and see? Go outside, look around. Then live in the moment and decide your choices. Chill, relax. Stop worrying.

But knowing what to expect from the sky above in the Maine weather forecast is more important when you are a contractor. Wondering if you strip off that old asphalt house roof.

Is there time to lay down the new one that replaces it? Or should paint go on tomorrow on the exterior?

    Maine Weather Happens.
Maine Weather, What To Wear Means Whatever Works, Protects, Is Comfortable. Does Not Put You In The Poor House.

Or if you are a private, commercial airline pilot, a truck driver, lobster boat or passenger ferry skipper. It becomes a little more critical to be in the know on what’s up with approaching Maine weather patterns.

Making plans to not be stuck out in the Maine weather when you should be inside. Parked next to a warm crackling fire. Waiting it out for the coast is clear Maine weather forecast to head back outside.

When you have lots of money invested for outdoor musical or sporting events, any town wide festival, outdoor wedding or funeral. Early knowledge of what the weather in Maine is going to end up being is smart planning. Good for business.

So alternate plans can be kicked into gear, to make the event fun, easier, prosperous. To let the show go on working around the dark clouds or heavy winds or downpours of rain, sleet, hail, snow that just won’t turn off.

Maine Outdoor Air Temperatures Color The Experience.
The Little Black Dog Walks The Owner Along The Sandy Shore In Misty Maine.

Farmers in Maine too rely heavily on accurate weather information.

For more than dry haying conditions. When to spray crops too. What is the wind speed going to be because if too brisk.

    Nope.

Pesticide applicators have strict rules in the do’s and don’ts to keep their spray license.

But depending on the Maine weather, the let’s spray early at dawn or into the evening when conditions can make the timing everything. To improve the coverage.

To get the maximum results, bang for the buck. Coming along way since just relying on the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

I learned a lot about today’s weather predicting, the study of what happens before it does so everyone has more to go on. Than just trusting their gut or flipping a coin.

    Maine Is Four Seasons.
Four Seasons, Sometimes One Ends Quickly In Maine.

Showing eight houses in the Caribou Maine area to a cousin who is accepting a job at the National Weather Service. I had no idea that fifteen to eighteen individuals man a station and what their specific roles were.

It made me think of how many lives were saved or lost in time of war due to the weather.

When the betting on the odds of the right or wrong weather during a battle surge or retreat was everything. In the success or failure and heavy loss of life.

My Dad was a tail gunner in a B-24 during World War Two.

And the greater accuracy of the shift to daylight bombing. Introduction of the much needed Norden bombsight.

To better pinpoint primary and secondary bomb targets made a difference. In ending the war earlier, in reducing the number of casualties by accidental strikes on schools, hospitals, civilian neighborhoods.

    Maine Is Small Town Special.
Maine Is Music. The Outdoor Loon On A Lake Kind. The Small Community Band Flavor.

But weather. Critical to know during the briefing of today’s mission of flight crews in the Flying Fortress formations. To know if the four engine bombers go up or are socked in due to inclimate weather.

The German 88 guns were deadly accurate with their flak bombardment.

So many of the B-24’s, B-17’s did not make back to base due to being shot down, blown out of the sky.

But to have the heavy losses bumped even higher due to bad weather stacked against the flight. To the IP and to release the payload on targets, then get the heck out of that heavily fortified radar swept sky.

Knowing the accurate weather, scoring better forecasts for the war campaign ahead. One more advantage the good guys had over the enemy. Whether coming in from the sky, the sea hitting the beaches or marching across war torn winter country sides.

The weather forecast helped improve the odds for what is ahead. Knowing the wind speed, cloud cover, temperatures and precipitation that could help or end up crippling the war effort and moral of the already tired troops.

  • The Weather In Maine Can Change Quickly.

    Maine Outdoor Weather Happens
You Go In For An Ice Tea, The Maine Weather, Seasons Suddenly Change By The Time You Get Back.

Something new and different, to shake it up is what weather in Maine is all about. Hey.

Never boring, not ho hum dreary. The cobalt blue cloudless skies with sunshine on your shoulder as you hike up the mountain trail, or snow ski down the other side is part of Maine weather. The weather can “turn yourself all about” as it changes quickly. Back and forth on the same day, overnight.

Finding yourself roughing it. Settled into a fall weather woods camp relaxed mood. With a crackling fire, gas lights, sparse furniture, no neighbors. Except the wildlife that occasional saunter by outside the hand peeled, crevice chinked log walls. With rain on the tin roof to put you to sleep. Or part of the background pitter patter as you prepare a joint hunting party produced supper. With local bounty harvest foods grown close to home part of the simmering stew. As card games are played, jokes are shared. The rain double clutching, changing speeds from heavy to barely audible, then to silent, in park gear. As you read a book. Write in a journal. Drift off to sleep. Think about loved ones, home.

Or floating your boat, kayak, canoe out on a lake in Maine.

The wind comes up and things go south fast. Being out to sea with the main land, islands no longer in sight. Big waves, deep inside scary fear building as your gut feeling shouts out “this is not good”. Could be the end. Reruns of the Perfect Storm and Titanic playing endless loops with deafening volume between your ears. Weather in Maine is to be respected. To be lost any where on land or out on the open water in Maine could mean someone will perish. If left in the elements exposed too long if temperatures lose red, go lower in the glass tube.

Some trick or trick Halloweens it can be balmy bag filling. For the trick or treat bell ringing too warm dressed in costumes to scare. Or a tad nippy on the “wicked good” door to door sugar high neighborhood canvas.

On the cable or TV news when Mainer’s watch someplace like Washington DC get a few inches of snow and go into a tail spin, it seems like over reaction.

Like a knee jerk reaction where you put the boot in your own forehead. But those areas don’t have experience with plowing snow. Lack the removal equipment. Folks not use to snow driving. Roadways jammed, loaded up with a slew of cars, motorists to maneuver around. And the municipalities end up putting garbage trucks, city vehicles pickup snow plows tacked on the front to battle snow fall. Grocery stores get overrun and shelves quickly go bare. Life comes to a stand still in areas not black belt accustom to the new snow experience.

Driving in snow is an art but you’ll find Maine roads remarkably well cleared of white stuff.

We take snow accumulations, what a good ripping northeaster delivers in the front yard all in stride.

Less people to avoid head on collisions, rear ending, t-boning into the side of whatever they are driving on the roads in Maine. And there is a neat homey feeling when you let it snow (times three) and you are in a rocker sipping something hot. In front of a cheery woodstove safe and sound. To ride it out. And thing about the pleasure the new blanket of white fluffy snow creates for the next day. As you thumb through the latest edition of the Maine snow sled magazine.

So when someone asks you what about Maine weather, remember we have no polar bears. That’s Artic Circle talk. Does not apply here and winter is one of the favorite seasons. Because we’re still outdoors cross and down hill skiing, playing pond ice hockey, fishing the lakes opened up with a Jiffy ice auger. The fresh air, friendly people, slower pace is quality of life. Awareness of the great outdoors around us and how lucky we are to be alive. To live in Maine.

Maine Youth Learn How To Work Early On..In The Potation Fields, On Fishing Boats, Raking Blueberries.

You’ve never been to Maine, know nothing about the state parked up in the right hand corner of the world.

So far north we’re almost in Canada. So for the reader’s digest version..here goes with some highlights about the place in case a question on Maine comes up on Jeopardy for four hundred dollars tonight. To get you up to speed about the facts, just the facts on Maine.

Maine has sixteen counties, the largest being Aroostook which is the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. There are 6,000 Maine lakes. We are blessed with 32,000 miles of Maine rivers and streams. 17 million acres of Maine is wooded, or roughly 91 percent. Maine’s Baxter State Park is home of Mt Katahdin which is the northern end of the Appalachian trail. Katahdin is 5268′ feet tall, just shy of being a mile’s 5280′.

The Maine state animal is the moose, the capital Augusta, the gemstone the Tourmaline.

Our Maine state soft drink is Moxie, the state tree the white pine, the bird the Chickadee. Our state cat is the Maine coon cat. The herb wintergreen, insect the honeybee and state floral emblem, the white pine cone and tassel. Like to fish? Our Maine fish is the landlocked salmon.

Our Maine state motto is Dirigo (I Lead). Maine’s population is 1.2 million. In northern Maine that means 11 people per square mile. Maine’s crime rate is the 4th lowest, Aroostook County is half that state average again. Maine is 320 miles long, 210 miles wide with over 33,215 square miles (roughly as big as the other five New England states combined.)

Maine has 65 lighthouses and Portland Head Light was commission by President George Washington. Maine’s wild blueberry industry make it the nation’s largest, raising 98% of the lowbush blueberries in the USA. Maine potatoes rank third in acreage and production nationally.

York was Maine’s first chartered city in 1641. Maine became a state in 1820 and prior to that year was part of Massachusetts. Nearly 40 million pounds of Maine lobsters are harvested each year. Other shellfish and fin fishes combined mean harvesting over 200 million pounds happens annually.

Maine’s weather has three climate regions being the coastal, southern interior and northern interior divisions. Recognized as one of the most healthful states in the nation, our average summer temperature in Maine is 70 degrees. In the winter, the average is 20 degrees with snowfall extremely light this year. But normal snowfall is snowiest in Maine in January with about 20 inches in the northern zone. The state wide snow accumulation ranges from 50 inches to 110 inches..depending on your location.
