Maine | Bean Suppahs, Flannel, Family First

Maine, bean suppash, flannel, family first.

Maine is a state that wears its identity on its flannel sleeves. For those who have never been, the Pine Tree State might conjure images of lighthouses, lobsters, and postcard-worthy coastlines. While those are quintessential parts of the Maine experience, there’s so much more to this rugged yet welcoming state. In Maine, community, resilience, and authenticity define the culture—traits reflected in everything from the way Mainers volunteer to how they approach a traditional Saturday night bean suppah.

    The Culture of “Bean Suppahs”

    baked beans supper pot
Hot And Hearty, Fill Your Plate With Beans And What Else At The Supper Time Bell?

Maine’s famous bean suppers, or “bean suppahs” as they’re affectionately called, are more than just meals—they’re an institution. These gatherings, often held in church basements or community halls, bring together people of all ages to enjoy heaping portions of baked beans, brown bread, hot dogs, coleslaw, and pies.

The unspoken rule is that no one leaves hungry, and everyone pitches in, whether it’s by cooking, serving, or cleaning up.

It’s not just about the food; it’s about connection. Maine small town living is like one big family experience. Mainers use these local home grown events as opportunities to support their neighbors. To strengthen the ties that make their communities feel like extended families.

Personalized License Plates and Maine Humor

When you drive through Maine, one thing you’ll notice is the abundance of personalized license plates. Mainers love to use their plates as a form of self-expression, often adding a dose of humor or a glimpse into their lives.

Whether it’s a witty pun or a nod to their profession, these Maine license plates show off a playful side that’s quintessentially Maine.

And while Mainers may love to joke, they’re equally quick to call you out—respectfully, of course. They have a knack for delivering a sharp observation or a dose of truth in a way that’ll leave you chuckling and maybe even a little wiser.

    Flannel and Practicality

Comfort is king in Maine, and flannel is the unofficial uniform of the state. Whether you’re stacking firewood, heading out to a bean suppah, or enjoying a brisk autumn hike, flannel is the perfect blend of practicality and timeless style.

Mainers don’t feel the need to impress anyone with flashy clothes or expensive cars.

Here, substance, practical always trumps style. It’s this down-to-earth mindset that makes Maine feel like one big small town. Keep it simple, nothing wishy washy or up in the air about it.

Maine residents have their heads screwed on right. There is a wicked clarity and common sense still works just fine here in Maine.

    A State That Pitches In

One of the most remarkable things about Maine is the way people help each other.

Volunteering isn’t just encouraged; it’s a way of life.

Make someone else’s life easier. From shoveling a neighbor’s driveway after a snowstorm to organizing fundraisers for local causes.

Truly, Mainers embody the idea that many hands make light work.

This sense of community isn’t limited to small Maine towns either.

Even in larger cities like Portland, Lewiston, etc you’ll find the same spirit of generosity and cooperation.

    Family First and Hard Work

Maine’s residents are known for their strong family values and tireless work ethic.

It’s a place where weekends are for family cookouts, fishing trips, and cheering on the Red Sox.

Hard work isn’t seen as a chore but as a way to build a good life.

You start off the smallest, newest family member with chores. More gets added and the skill set grows as they do.

    The “Unspoiled State”

Maine’s natural beauty is one of its most cherished treasures.

Unlike many places, Maine remains largely unspoiled by over development.

From the jagged coastlines to the serene forests and countless lakes, Maine’s landscapes feel untouched and timeless.

The state of Maine is where you can still drink clean water from a mountain stream, spot a moose on a quiet back road, or catch a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring above in clear blue skies.

Mainers are deeply connected to their environment and take their stewardship seriously, ensuring these natural resources remain pristine for generations to come.

Unspoiled, nothing messed up the natural outdoor beauty like development, traffic, over crowding.

In rural Maine which most of the big state is, backyards are in acreages not feet. Your neighbor may be half a mile away not even in sight.

There is space living in Maine part of full time. Is it like that where you live now?

Maine is a place where neighbors look out for one another, where nature inspires awe.

Where you can still find joy in the little things—like a warm plate of baked beans shared with friends. Maine isn’t just a state; it’s a way of life, and it’s one worth celebrating.

I Just Want To Be Left Alone.

I just want to be left alone.

Leave me along, just let me be. Hear that desperate plea desire uttered almost daily from Maine real estate buyers.

Space, privacy, peace and quiet. In crowded populated areas it may be impossible or just too darn expensive to create it. In rural Maine, not hard at all.

The wanting to be left alone. It’s not that most are anti social. The group just share the common goa for different reasonsl. Getting away from people too close for comfort. Especially the ones constantly on your case on how best to lead your life. That have to point out where you are doing it wrong, missing the target.

Ever notice many of the folks self appointed to help you with your life should spend more time housekeeping their own?

It gets old living with the evil eye and wondering here it comes again. Tightening up or smiling and trying to back away and run for the hills. What I am doing wrong now in someone’s opinion?

So Maine is the perfect place to create some space.

Follow The Path Less Traveled. The One Up In Rural Maine.

The term “backyard” is very different depending on where you do live on the blue and green spinning marble.

To someone in Maine, your country neighbor is half a mile away. There may be a rock wall separating your property from the two hundred acres or more next door. In a 300 lot urban subdivision, everyone calls the fence company. To define the “backyard” that is measured in feet not acres. No side lawn, front yard and zero lot lines happens.

Grass, do you mow and how long does it take each week? Weed wack only and lots of bark chips not grass to shorten?

In Maine, we mow lawns like we hay.

Big open nicely mowed for the weekend lawns are the norm. Maybe they put drink holders on riding lawn mowers for a reason. I know people who say they do their best thinking mowing the lawn. Not in circles but angled, neatly trimming like you learned from a family member black belt lawn specialist growing up in Maine.

If you live where why have side windows but you can see the grain of your neighbor’s vinyl siding. No side yard, no back yard and parking. What about parking? Where do I do it? It has to be done out on the street. Or round the corner at a multi story parking garage for a hefty fee.

To get a sense of space, where you live now do you have to trot out of the cul de sac and down the street to a nearby park to get some?

No traffic, little crime, just pure and natural without the privacy fencing, zero lot lines, plenty of parking.

Maine is the way life should be. People are friendly because their personal space is protected and no problem maintaining it on a daily basis. Not just a week’s vacation in Maine for rehab. Maine, is she what is missing in your life? Do you want, need a piece of ME?

  • Living In Maine Blog Post

    Living In Maine Blog Post

    Living in Maine.

These are the best of times if you accept, adjust, adapt, and creatively do the best you can with a positive spirit. When you grow up in rural Maine, being resourceful and collectively as a community tackling change happens. If this is your first setback, life is harder. These can be the good old days twenty years from now. Never discount that the going could get tougher before it improves or is predictable right?

Is life easy or hard or meh?

If you were taught to look for bumps in the road, to expect them, not be surprised. Being eagle eyed and aware. Learning how to make the most of events. If you can do that, you will be better off than most. An optimistic approach to life gives you and others around you hope, helps to keep the faith and to expect change. You stay optimistic when you daily remind yourself, when you give thanks and are grateful for others in your life. You become way way more aware of what is happening around you in nature. The wildlife get noticed and have a daily roll in your entertainment and fulfillment in Maine.

Otters Play, Get Social At 5AM On A Maine Lake Video.

When you are spoiled and don’t worry about others around you, you wear a thick life darkening blindfold.

You are not an asset to your small Maine town. We are all in this together is how the tides life up the small Maine community. Having faith and channeling physical and mental energies into efforts that will help yourself and others is the best course of action.

Would you be better off living somewhere else means some areas will suffer hardships, others get through the adjustment piece of cake.

COVID19 can make a person have a serious heart to heart with the guy or gal in the mirror. Change is part of life. Self inflicted change makes it easier to roll with the punches and accept adjustment. Surprises get swallowed easier when you expect them. If you don’t think the way life is unfolding should be happening to you, you forget and no longer care that others are in the same boat. Or that may have it much worse than you.

    amish wagon heading to church
Heading To Church On A Maine Country Road. Amish Weight Distribution Off Or There’s A Broken Leaf Spring.

Many preach we all need to strive for a simpler life.

But the bigger question is why do we complicate and clutter it? Is something missing in your life? Do you feel fulfilled or no matter how good things are rolling, you have a capacity to find fault? To wish for more instead of being grateful for how lucky you are with what you already have. Do you want to be happy? Is full of joy a textbook definition but not in your opinion a real world expectation? Based on what you were taught by others close to you growing up around you, have you seen the power of just what a positive attitude can accomplish?

The COVID19’s coronavirus pandemic like any setback should make you and I take inventory of what I need to do for more than mere survival.

Wanting to to more than just get by but to help your community is something we all strive to do in small Maine communities. Maybe life is a little harder and we are a tad more self reliant rather than expecting others to help us carry the load. But that strain and daily stress is what keeps you in the real World game when real change comes along.

What if I lost my job, if health failed, a fire wiped everything out?

Taking precautions to minimize the chances of a total wipe out is part of the insurance. But living below your means so you have a little nest egg to carry you through should be part of the gig. Not expecting someone, anyone else or a government institution to swoop in and fix the problem helps empower you. To be more in charge of your destiny and quality of life.

I feel badly for folks jammed in a city setting that don’t live in Maine.

It must be hard watching life around you tighten up and lots of what you loved about where you live dry up and stall. But when social distancing is easier because we are populated 11 to a mile,

    ice freezing in maine

when what we do for fun is not heavily dollar based, life in rural Maine makes for a better back drop. Living simpler is easier when you are just grateful to have shelter, to live where you enjoy amazing sunrises, spectacular sunsets and it is lower cost to hang your hat in rural Maine.

COVID19 forces a person to seriously examine where I live and why.

Many are eyeballing Maine as the next stop. What you need out of life changes with or without a coronavirus or an edgy country sharply divided right down the middle. Where do I want to live and what can I do to improve my surroundings for me, my family, for others in the community? I believe you can do so much good in a small Maine community and the reward is great.

Many are making the transition to Maine for what we don’t have.

Traffic, crime, insincerity, pollution. For the long list of what we do that is not longer available in the city landscape or never was. Space, trails, hideaways below radar. When you see others step up to do more and a possess a strong consistent concern for others around you.

Maine simple living frees up a person in many ways.

Pitching in and working collectively. That is one beautiful experience because no one person could pull it off without the combined community segments firing on all the cylinders behind the drive to do the right thing. Everyone on the same page creates no sour notes and their more harmonious major not minor chords.

    How are you making out?

How’s life treating you? Figure you have it better than most? Is it like last call and the bright lights suddenly came on. The proprietor putting turned over chairs up on tables and making hand motions to propel you to the parking lot door? Muttering more than once “Last call”.  Then “We don’t care where you go but you can not stay here”.

Maine has four seasons and all are enjoyed, all spend outdoors. Living in Maine, there is a sadness as one season passes but quickly we embrace the next. As you get older, time flies and life becomes shorter. The seasons too brisk and it is up to us to make time to fill each of them with outdoor traditions. Our pastimes in Maine are 90% outdoors where wildlife, natural resources are ready to enjoy without crowds of people to interfere with the experience. Looking for Maine, the way life should be?

    Time to float or fly?

Where would you go if you did not live where you do now? Have you been thinking Maine makes sense for a part time, full time investment?

  • Checking In With Maine Coronovirus, What Day Is It Now?

Checking In With Maine Coronovirus, What Day Is It Now?

Rural Maine and the day to day when you live here adjusting to conorovirus.

Over the weekend, checked in with one brother living in Vancouver Washington because Seattle has been in the news a lot with the cornorovirus buzz. Or maybe the areas you pick up your ears on and think about are only because you have loved ones in that location. My brother told me where he lives is four hours from Seattle. The way he described the day to day with cornovirus is not so different than here in Maine.

Brother Brian ordered out food from the brother in laws restaurant a few miles away Saturday night. The Washington state place that is closed for indoor dining like our local eateries but doing a brisk take out business. The to-go food enjoyed in the parking lot with other diners 8 feet or more away. My hometown had York’s Dairy Bar that operated the same way summers. You put your lights on for service. Given a wooden popsicle stick with a number on it. The ordered food car hop delivered to your open window where a tray gets hung. The vinegar on your home made fries. Enjoy your burgers, fried clams, those onion rings made with pancake batter all from the comfort of your car.

    maine amish simple living
Having More Than Enough And Grateful. Living Simple Is What Maine Is All About Yesterday And Today.

No doubt all of us would like to have family all around us at times like this with coronovirus’s impacting on our lives.

Have one out of four children living in the same Maine home town. Face timing the first grand daughter is a comfort. Watching her climb stairs crawling and becoming more steady on her feet walking. Last night’s call during supper and with her eating a wholesome organic food meal while saying “Poppa Poppa”. Turning her head to look at the door to the farmhouse expecting I will be coming in to visit.

One of my two daughters in the Boston Massachusetts area are in the nightly habit of going out on her open porch.

She and her husband sing with the neighborhood. Her husband plays the guitar as warmer weather approaches. There is laughter, crying, sharing. The piano in the home will be put to good use. Across the street is a couple where the wife is an OB-GYN nurse, a few houses to the left you find a neighborhood doctor. All comforting when a new baby is expected next month and talk of shortages of masks, coronovirus potentially tying up health care facilities is part of the media buzz. As industries retool to build much needed ventilators, masks, gloves.

It reminds me of my Dad the WWII Army Air Force B-24 tail gunner.

He told me the auto industry shifted gears from cars to war airplanes. Cranking out with Rosie the Riveter’s help a B-17 and B-24 every fifty minutes. Using our time in Northern Maine to the most effectiveness keeps your mind off worry or despair. Keep moving in the right direction and know you are doing all you can to be resourceful and health conscious at the same time.

Your thoughts and prayers, what you think about are people.

The ones you know and love that are expecting or had a child recently. The elderly with medical conditions you know in your own community. What can you do to help is where the bulk of the mental, physical and spiritual energies go along with living the best you can. But each day is one to begin with what can I do that helps my area and ripples out from there. It is not something we start doing when a coronovirus arrives on the scene. In small rural Maine, worrying and caring for the needs of others is what we do non-stop to conquer and survive hardships collectively. (more…)

Or are you late to the party about spelling out your New Year’s Resolution dream for 2020. What’s that? I hear muttering about you’re just too busy, no time. Watching others with lives new and highly exciting compared to ours?

Easy Does It, Keep It Simple Living In Maine.

Maine’s magic is all about living simpler without wall to wall people invading your personal space.

And you know how clutter piling up around your home can cause stress? Or the feeling of being perpetually late, pushed hard to be here, there, everywhere can overwhelm? Because you are just being pulled in too many directions. When you take a deep breath, step back and study what’s is causing the what is missing, the causes are plain as day. How you fill your day is still a personal decision right ? And you do have some say in the life you lead or do you?

Families, Outdoor Fun, Maine Fresh Air. Winter Greets Spring. Priceless.

What leaves you out of sorts, feeling deep down dissatisfied is often just too many people pushing and shoving and making demands on you.

Maine is under populated, with vast unspoiled space which helps tremendously to set the stage for the healthier living foundation to build on. Not many people to deal with means much is missing and just does not show up on your radar.

The high cost of city living, all the traffic, noise, expense and worry about personal safety weigh a person down big time. Like heavy cement shoes were slipped on permanently in just your size. Or your pair of arms are pressed tightly against your chest as if a permanent strait jacket was laced up and buckled tightly to cut off your air supply. And who put on these leg irons? Ah, you did.

What can rob a beautiful day of promise shortly after you rise and are suppose to shine?

What brings in the dark clouds that hides the blue sky and makes you a prisoner is not someone else’s fault. The over stuffed bloat and everything just not in its right place around you day in and out takes its toll. Empties a person. Shouldn’t you be able to fill your schedule day and night with some hand picked items and live your own life with some self input in the personal choices?

That feeling of not being as ship shape as you want and powerless to change your life’s direction. Virtually out of control weary added to a continuous over booked lifestyle where the clock is your drill sergeant can leave a person drained. Bone weary.

Wondering what’s wrong. It’s what is missing. A person can self medicate to temporarily address the symptoms. But they don’t go away on their own. And clutter is not just what fills your household living space. It spills over beyond the physical square footage you call home and where you stuff whatever you hoard and consider treasure.

A day at a time makes the how do you fix the direction your life has taken easier to accomplish. Causes patience, the sincere effort needed to force the self examination. Spring fever, cabin fever intensifies as warmer days, cooler but not cold nights become the norm. As the season change begins transition. Maple syrup sap is starting to run. The snow is melting and spring skiing, snow sledding is superb. Ice shacks are heading off the frozen sheets of water to prepare for smelts running, other forms of trolling for your fish dinner.

Local Mainers are digging out from winter. Reading seed catalogs. Enjoying natural speed bumps and driving obstacles. While a fresh crop of pot holes are in full bloom as frost heaves release the frozen hold on the ground around us.

Sample Maine on a vacation and consider what if you lived here full time?

If you were involved in your small Maine community and needed, contributing to others who do the same to benefit you in the process. Maine, come for a day, end up staying a lifetime.
