  • Breakdown Lane, Parked Or Itching For Something Missing.

Point whatever you are driving north to Maine.

Load up the Desoto, Chevy Nomad wagon, van man to the gills. Hike, bike. Heck, stick out that thumb. Bum a ride to Vacationland if you have to as your last option.

You may have friends in Maine that are one option for lodging. Couch surfing here and there. Until your feet get planted firmly under you. And you end up “sponsoring” someone the same fashion to play it ahead. Pass it on.

Maine Is Less People, More Living.

Why do people move, relocate to Maine?

This link speaks volumes on the attraction eye candy one by one. A slew of reasons for the kick in the pants. The get up and go ambition building.

But the primary reason for the let’s make the ME move is something is missing in your life. You can attempt for awhile to ignore it.

Try the lazy, throw money at it medication that works half baked at best. But it all fetches up. There is a ghost in the machine running the show.

    What’s missing?

Usually space, or the lower cost of living in Maine. Friendly make eye contact, glad to see you people. Not the ones that avoid your conversations, are in one major life or death serious hurry  scurry. And the idea light bulb shines brightly like an arc welder. Or the glint of rows and rows of floating sunshine lake diamonds that mesmerize.

Guiding a person’s one by one steps. To make the life mental shift to home grown rather than store bought. Do I need it or just want it thinking. One big kick in the pants. Away from multi story skyscraper living and bring it all home as Johnny’s record producer said in the studio to launch a career.

To high tail it out of a high crime, heavy traffic location to rural Maine.

Life is too short to be stuck in grid lock. To waste it in the race.

The days and night are made to live, experience. To learn and grow from the discoveries. To grow and expand to avoid becoming narrow and stagnant. If you are happy, passionate about where you hang your hat.

Where you live, work and play. Raise a family. No place better than small town values, without living in fear.

Some folks we hear from in our job as a Maine real estate broker for coming up on 36 years. Making the leap fueled by the cattle prod of regrets.

Stuck too long between the rock and hard place without the option of going sideways or around whatever life obstacle froze them dead in their tracks. Wanting to start over, do it again Steely Dan.

The burning desire for answers to life’s problems, mysteries.

You can hear yourself think in Maine . Because no one is in your space except you. Is is a comfort living in the 4th lowest crime state.

    Happy Maine Families, Households.
How To Cook Up A Happy Household, Create A Happy, Responsible Family Member.

Being able to fix and repair, do your home improvements yourself and not having every micro move tied to writing a check, sliding a magnetic card.

Not spending money like a drunken sailor into port.

Or a pirate out on a night of raising cane when the rum in the tum tum firewater kicks in. Just before the black out.

Respect, easy does it, slow she goes.

Growing your own food and knowing what you put down the hatch. More hands on and feeling pretty peacock proud of what took you longer.

But the next time would be done in shorter time with what was self taught watching a you tube how to video along the way.

Your home improvement project taking a lifetime to complete but the process savored. The results sweeter because the high on the tree fruit that takes effort to reach is always tastier than the quick grab low hanging fruit.

You can do it, attah boy felt inside. Reminded if it is to be it is up to me.

Folks learn along the way with the dips, twists of life that nothing stays the same. Life changes, moves fast and you better keep up with the 5,6,7,8 hokey pokey. Life does not stop for anyone. The trick to keep it all in perspective.

Knowing 95% of folks are well intentioned, want the same gusto out of their short life on the revolving green and blue marble. To consider it all joy, smiling from a generator linked to the upward turn of the corners of the mouth somewhere down close to their souls.

Maine is a place of unspoiled beauty.

Of lots of room to roam and stretch your legs. Expand your mind and streamline how you approach conflict and avoid drama. Manure storms.

  • Questions From The Answers, Sometimes More Is Needed.

In depth, long extended play anything is the most rewarding right?

But today in the quickness of drive through and multi tasking, cutting to the chase can miss much.

Like Monarch or Cliff’s Notes for the high school or college student that waited until the night before the exam to read War and Peace.

Or some other epic that just time did not allow to digest and report the findings to earn the sheepskin. The letter grade to move along people. There is nothing more to see here. Step along now. Show’s over.

Maine Is Small Town, Simple Living.
Maine. The Little Things That Are Missing In Urban Living’s Hustle Bustle. Less Is More. Turns Up The Awareness.

Sometimes the longest book is not the most words either right?

Pass the big easy to read print or the filler, fluff like Wonder Bread pumped with mostly hot air. Fools on first glance.

But back to the question answers causing more questions. Because not enough is plopped on the cafeteria tray. As it slides down the highly polished aluminum rails with the sneeze protective glass barrier under your nose.

To make sure you keep your distance and don’t spray whatever germs you have.

Or collect the ones someone else brought to the party.

I worked at a broadcast facility or two in the Bangor Maine area during and after college graduation. And the almighty clever, catchy sound bite. That tickles and gets the attention of the masses. Deep in thought about lots of other things besides the news of the day.

It was like the perfect shot used to fill these blog posts. Like ice in a tall glass of cold, pure, all natural Maine water. Or something squeezed from the whatever was picked from the vine out from the back forty.

    maine small town living
Children, Our Greatest Entertainment, Investment In Maine Small Town Living.

Something that was tip of the ice berg illuminating. Quick like a bunny efficient. Like the commands to herd the kids along at bedtime. When it is beyond time for lights out.

But what happens when not enough on this, this and that subject are all there is?

Isn’t it like empty calories? Yes, you are eating, funneling down the gullet lots of bulk, filler but not enough of the stuff you can really sink your teeth into to get down to the nitty gritty.

The juiciest part of the knowledge to take a bite out of like when you are on a walk in the country. And spy with your little blue, brown or whatever eye color a gift from Johnny Appleseed. Rachel Raspberry or Suzie Wild Strawberry. And reach up, down over over. To pluck, bite into the crisp, tart and refreshing that is heirloom rich in the case of the apple of your eye.

Not GMO alterered to look good, taste okay but just a bad photo copy of what you should of had.

Yeah, we’ve hunt and pecked about the merits of Maine organic food before.

    Maine Simple Living.
Warm Up, Get Close, Settle Back And Relax. Whew. You Made It. You’re In Maine.

Taking the time to glean and graze on the A to Z of a subject you know little about today. Or one you thoroughly enjoy and do know a little bit about and more than many of the other average bears. Time, how you allocate it and putting it all into balance.

Priorities to establish in the household so kids know another to not forget this, but remember that. So balance can happen.

The kind to keep a person from going wobbly and to know what they need and must have to be grounded, centered, full of joy.

I am glad I live in Maine because of lots of reasons.

Primary and foremost is it is a place with space that allows you to know waste time worried about being in someone else’s proximity. Their center of the Universe Ground Zero. Get down to your own level.

Maine Is Animals, They Enchance Our Lives.
Herding Cats, In Maine Don’t Try To. They Run, Rule The Roost.

To free you up to pursue digging in and becoming more with your own talents and resources. No time wasted in traffic or worried about crime.

More time for focusing on what is real important and not artificial or stacked high with layers of players. To push the paperwork of over burdened local regulations and enforcement.

Maine is simple living and all that is removed to clear the table to get down to the meat and potatoes of it all. To feast on what really tickles the senses.

To get you the full meal deal and extended play, the version of the book like Stephen King’s The Stand that the author went back.

Adding another 500 pages to for a re-read of literary left overs… the best kind when you cherish it more the second time around. And see what was missed the first read, added for the second one.

  • Pace Yourself When You Are In Maine, Easy Does It.

Maine, is too much of a good thing a bad thing?

When you find yourself living in Maine full time, it is often like a horse put out to pasture. After a long stint of being inside a winter box or standing stall. And only dining on two sessions of three flakes of hay, grain, a big slurp of water per day.

    Maine Is Lighthouses.
Shining The Way, With Sight And Sound To Avoid The Craggy Maine Rock Bound Coastline.

And suddenly pasture clover springs up, surrounds you for as far as the eye can gawk.

Kicking up the heels happens and hand gallop running happens.

Nothing holding you back. No longer hemmed in. The smells of spring lushness, newness. Along with getting down on all fours. Then timber…. lean and dropping to the ground. To get on your back with all legs skyward.

As the back, spine is self scratched in the rich, cool ground cover of green, white and pink flowers. Mixed with other tasty conservation seed mix and meadow cover. Springing up in the back forty of the Maine farm land.

Easy does it or you can get sick.

Like too much pink and blue spun sugar cotton candy after all those round and round. Up and down washing machine rides. Worn ragged trying to hit all the tourist attractions can happen.

Slow down Pilgrim. It is not like NASCAR fast food funneled to the gullet. Not look out teeth and gums, here it comes to bottom out. Hit the stomach.

Savor, slow food collect, dine on the outdoor moments that are so magical in Maine.

Sure, hit the list of must do stops in Maine.

Then mosey on over to gander at the other less publicized ones. Adventuring in four wheel drive, on foot or skis or paddling. Into the off road ones the brochure left out too. When you live in Maine, Vacationland land, that six hour or more drive out of staters have to put under their belt times two.

    It all changes.

Maine Is Small Town, Hands On.
Home Made, Real, All Natural. That’s Maine.

There is no just a too far inbetween long weekend, one vacation pause a year to fill. When you can hear the clock ticking in a deafening way. Not when you live full time, have relocated or are lucky enough to live in Maine for good.

I am lucky where I live to be able to hit the coast in 90 miles. To sample ocean clams, lobsters that start out green and end up red. To walk around a lighthouse, along the shoreline.

Or tomorrow will climb Haystack Mountain for a younger set of legs along for the hike in Castle Hill, Aroostook County Maine. There is a picnic area across the road at the base of the Haystack. Horse Mountain, a junior mountain 1400′ tall is another beginner option at Baxter Park which is just a hour away.

On the way to whatever the headliner option is in Maine, the opening acts to add to the buffet shuffle can be cherry picked.

Tomorrow the lumberman’s museum in Patten Maine is an option.

Doing a loop over to Rt 11 and around the Crown of Maine. As we trek up through the Allagash, I take a couple photos and put up a real estate sign in Oxbow heading for Ashland. To hang a right and roll into the base parking area of Haystack Mountain.

Ah, but a little thing the farmers in Maine during planting, harvest especially know all about too well.

The weather in Maine, could put a giant monkey wrench in the gears, the works.

So hang loose, take it easy in Maine.

Make sure you bring the kids to get them started on the Maine traditions. To pass on to their little ones.

Have a back up plan to drain some of the energy of youth. To exercise with major scenery and plenty of fresh clean air with some photo opts.

We’ll be sure to share, post Maine images of whatever we end up doing. Don’t we always leave a trail of Maine blog post ramblings and supporting photos?

  • The Audience Has Different Preferences Than Just You And I.

Marketing to more than just your own special tastes, it means seeing others out in the audience.

Because if you don’t, the following is small. Because last check, there are like colors in the rainbow a lot of distinct preferences for anything from music to food to where to vacation in Maine.

Sitting On A Maine Porch. Maine Is That.
All Year Long, Maine Is Outdoor Living.

Survey says (ding ding ding) not the same answer on the tip of your tongue.

Or held near and dear in your heart. And if you and I open up and try new things. To embrace, consider new ideas or approaches to anything in life, something special happens inside. You move from narrow, set in your ways and expecting others to tow the same thin line.

To let’s try something different. Even 180 polar opposite. Give it a shot, whirl. It snowballs. The spark catches fire and here we go for growth. Being able to accept easier other people’s viewpoints that are scattered in the wind that swirls around us.

Without taking it personal or figuring they are wrong. New ideas. Ones that are not your own. The answer to how you feel about much is life is not a yes or no, right or wrong answer. And toleration, patience, hear them out before you put up your hand in protest. Or say that would never work. To be a wet blanket, borderline Eeyore.

Ruts happen in life and routines can be easy to perform without thought.

But. What are you missing in the short journey in that dash between the when you are born, when you take that last ride.

Maine Small Town Living Is Simpler.
We Consume Less Power Here, Maine Is Ripe For Wind Electrical Generation For Other Hungry Consuming Markets.

The people you circle with in life and bump into is part of the let’s try something different or not. Traveling, reading, or just having a creative imagination all helps shake it up.

Open the doors and windows in your head and heart. To blow out the cobwebs.

And shift from talking about people you like or not to let’s share hopes, dreams, experiences.

To wow, see the bigger picture.

To solutions to make life better for you and those around you. Because it never goes away from making sure it is all about the greater good.

Outside yourself is where the enrichment, enjoyment is and Maine is a place with space to get blown away. Not caught up in your own problems and realize this too shall pass.

What are you venturing out into and enjoying that either never had time for or any inclination to try?

  • Waging War For Peace Inside Instead Of Fighting Battles No One Invited You To.

The simple goal to surround yourself with positive people.

Most New Year’s resolution lists have that one somewhere near the top I would bet. Does not just mean close ranks to pull those who always agree with you closer. Or that have the same negative habits of let’s see. Who can be today’s character slam, personality “pick apart the human being” in conversation.

People that enjoy that stone casting are cruel, mean and insecure.

Sometimes pickled, hammered, heading for a black out. Or merely are followers that just join the pack. Lob a rock, aim for the temple. Like bullies, loners that want to belong to some circle, any group. To intimidate and earn respect the wrong way. From fear not home grown inside merit and hard work appreciation.

Often the contributors in the round robin, anything but friendly chit chat do not even know the person. On the receiving end of the pointed, steel toe cowboy boot. But they have an awfully strong conviction in their darkest heart of hearts. Concerning the one or series of neighbors, community members of who is branded, graded USDA rotten to the core.

Maine Mountain Hiking Trails, Does A Body Good.
Negative People Are Not Mountain Climbers. Get High Up, Surround Yourself With Positive People.

Often just labeled a jerk, reject stickered “bad to the bone no good”. Just so severely disliked that it is herd them up on by one in the critical pointed finger.

Those deemed best destined for the now boarding for Misfit Island. At gate what a zero.

That are lined up, turned around to be individually shot down. Placed in the corner with the tall cone pointed hat facing away from the angry posse mob. That take turns throwing kindling on the fire that burns fueled by bad Karma hatred.

Time out. Alcohol can be a good or bad thing if applied in moderation.

Sometimes the bad press is merely this is fun to play the who do you do not really know or like and pssst. Pass it on game that gets louder. More vicious, raunchy as the drink numbers downed add up. Take their toll lubricating the I can top that or here’s another one I hate and want you to as well.

But it can be a splash of firewater for the the New Year’s Eve held high toast of bubbly at the end of the night. And sincere appreciation for your partner, family members who are with you through thick and thin.

Who share the same hopes and dreams for the next dozen hanging sheets of 31 or less numbers to fill.

Where you together reflect in what is parked in the rear view mirror behind you. What is up ahead in the roadway of uncertainty called life. And we need others to co-pilot, navigate it best.

    Maine Small Family Values.
Family First And Last In Maine. Raising Them. Attacking Others Is Not The Target.

The barley pop shared after a friendly, physical sporting exercise and reliving the plays and saves. That is social without leading to let’s destroy a thirty pack. Down a bunch of fifths individually.

Or a glass of wine introduced before or during an Easter ham hopping on a platter. Getting brought on stage for a family table sit down munch a bunch and reflection. Or shared watching a sunset from a Maine patio or open deck.

In front of an outdoor Maine lake, backyard or river cabin fire pit.

Surrounded, with filled plastic or folding canvas chairs. Staring into the blaze, sharing and collecting positive ions. During the exchange of ideas and gleaning answers to life’s easiest, most daunting questions and the in between. Usually the talk with the crickets, loons and bull frog in the background about family members, personal struggles or triumphs. Not who can we dump on next, your turn.

Those we love not hate the conversation fodder. The joys and hardships of those near and dear and often related to us. Not out verbally sniping, back biting without their knowledge folks out in the community that we don’t even really know. Or like a witch hunt, may never get to based on someone else’s coveted opinion. To stay away, quarantine them with a skull and crossbones poison warning.

That only makes you wonder in time. Who you really have on the list, the small circle you really count as friends.

    Maine Potate Heart Shaped Special
Different, Odd Or Something Beautiful. In Others, What Do You See? Good Or Bad?
Because this one, that one is brought up in less than a redeeming light using your sharp pointed tongue. Spewing negativity, stinking thinking.

Finding something good to say about others.

Locating the fault, sharp edges with yourself. Wage war inside to change what needs housekeeping stealing your joy, others too around you.

Find the right color wire to cut on the ticking device to diffuse the anger knee jerk reaction that is painted blackest. Lifting up not crushing, slamming down the small Maine family value way to approach living. Playing well with others.

You may not be happy but it is not others that cause that. It is an inside job to go either way with the emotions, the smile up or frown down. Tearing down anyone else instead of looking for their redeeming qualities. That does nothing good in a community.

Attack problems, issues and look for the good in others.

So they pitch in willingly and not get exiled. In small Maine communities we need everyone involved in the discussions and hammered out solutions. Have to have all the players pulling together in the same direction. To live in harmony and achieve true peace inside and out that endures for the greater good.

  • Child Like Curiosity, You Never Lose It With Kids In The Picture.

Learning never stops and we are all beginners right?

The job not done and often the “aha moments” come from the least expected places. I talked to a past local Maine town council chairman who said back in the 1980’s he was gung ho to cure the ills in local government. To tighten it up and straighten it out.

He said he was so sure of the obvious that he would say “that is stupid that we do blah blah blah”.

Confident that another way would be so much better. Why the delay. Come on people. Folks don’t you, others see this or that? Until he got knee deep into the process, the eye opening meat of the matter.

Small Maine Town Living, Getting Along.
Simple Child Like Curiosity, Respect For The Fragile In All Relationships.

Taking the time to visit a small Maine town department head. Asking a veteran councilor of present or past service for the background details. And learns “we tried it the way you suggest and this is what happened. Why we went back to the old way for now.”

The why it would work or not then, maybe now either. Is a mystery to the brand new looking in from the outside perspective. What seems so obvious. Is a little more complicated than the surface skim take away provides.

This same local resident admits now freely, the only thing “stupid” was his early shoot from the hip remarks.

But he did not know the history of where we were, how we got here. Was not well versed in the more complicated issues surrounding the decision making. Why what at first glance he thought would work better did not in the final group decisions needed that would shape life in the small Maine town of tomorrow.

The eventual council chairman needed to do his homework. To keep an open mind, stay positive and objective. To log some hours asking the hard danced around questions. Truly listening with both ears. Parked pie hole. Not talking to envision the best course of action as a group. Decision and policy making that is hammered out, fashioned by a collection of public servants. During lots of long meetings with heated dialogue. Seasoned hot and juicy in the served up spirited discussion.

But guided always with respect, leadership, easy does it on the rhetoric. No spin. And the loud and clear sincere desire to work together to succeed not fail. For the best possible solution set selection.

Getting Along When You Live In Maine
We Live In Maine, We Keep It Simple. Have To.

No back biting, stabbing from behind or taking anything too personal in late night differences in opinions.

No hair crossed and up in arms for the I’ll show them a thing or two. That has zip to do with the proceedings. Causing the Johnny get your gun.

The need for retaliation that steals time away from seeking the shared destination every property taxpayer is watching. No thank you said to any personal attacks that just makes everyone in the room cringe, wilt, fade.

To feel like they are slumped over in the saddle. Circling aimlessly round and round on a horse in the desert with no name. The all track of time lost and lacking any real concrete resolution. Making the room thirst with sun parched, blistered lips. For just a simple cup, swig of refreshing peace. In the white flag, regrouping, retreating to begin again and again.

The sit up, drink, rinse, swish, spit (repeat) to remove the bitterness the taste of personal attacks leaves. The lash the other to a stake, their feet surrounded by tinder dry kindling and smile. Saying “there, anyone have a wooden match?” debate that ensues. Getting your way by warning don’t cross me. Yikes.

Distracted from what is actually for the greater good happens when pettiness is allowed. That robs the peace, sets the destructive tone. De-railing the calm that is the required petri dish atmosphere for cultivating positive reasoned results. Brainstorming, batting around what if we try this, would that work toward the end goal?

The progress that needs to happen because we are wasting daylight. Burning way way too much midnight oil inching forward. Making it harder than it needs to be and highly unproductive. Attacking people, not problems is never pretty. Why do people do it?

Maybe adults have too much on their minds that makes us miss the obvious.

Or don’t want to keep an open one. Or are chasing the wrong butterflies, focused on the ends of the ill picked rainbow agendas. To rewrite their history that went sideways. Long gone water over the dam, under the bridges burned one by one to light the path ahead.

    Maine Small Towns, Getting Along.
Refreshing, Water Over The Dam Means Regrouping To Work Together In Small Maine Towns.

When we make it more complicated than we need to because of all the rabbit trails we can side track, get lost on during the discussion. You have to start and end with why that happens in the soul searching. What makes you tick? What is the combination and inside that little black box flight recorder blinking signal. Parked next to that soul.

A child does not have all that fanfare in their decision making.

Not a lot of history when you are only flying at three or four feet off the ground. Their filtering involves just eight crayons. Tucked inside a small flapped box of simple choices. To reach for a blend as their paint by number experience grows. They don’t like confrontation, dissension and don’t understand conflict argument resolution.

Kids don’t have all the history of past experiences to color their perceptions good or bad. They operate more with trust, faith, their gut of what feels good or bad. They also want to see the good, only the pure in others. Because they operate on that receptor premise. They keep it simple because they are. Until life black and blue sucker punches happen. Bruised purple spots one by one are added to their tender hearts. Hurt people hurt people.

Reduce it all down and think about what does it take to get along to make changes in a small Maine town that can not afford to bicker.

People don’t like change. It scares them.

The unknown always does. But if it has to happen wouldn’t it be better to shape it than be out of the loop for where it ends up with no input? If you and I are lost in the process it is a ship heading for rocks in the darkness.

Or if we one by one don’t strike a match. Light, shield, hold high and protect the candle in the wind as Elton sang about with harmony and tinkling ivories. Promoting love, peace, sometimes a truce, just taking a deep breath in relationships around us. If we don’t realize how we help or hurt the process of making it at least as good as or over the top better than it was for all concerned.
