Instate vacations, Cape Porpoise, Old Port, Wells Beach ME.

When you are lucky enough to live in Maine full time, Vacationland is your playground. Ready to tap. Short trips, instate vacations are quick and easy when you already live in the state of Maine.

This blog post more of a photo log about a three day trip from Northern to Southern Maine and back.

Anything Maine to cover is fair game right for this blogging post channel right ?

Had a little Maine winter snow storm change the instate vacations weekend plans just a tad.

Because a foot of new fluffy white stuff arriving in the weather forecast last Friday, Meg and I decided to head out a half day earlier. This Maine snow storm started north and headed south so we got on Interstate 95 Thursday afternoon to stay ahead of it. Pushed along during daylight and just warmer temperatures, light rain happening outside the car.

Good cruising to git while the getting was optimum. We both knew the weather was influx, it was going to change. If we sat still or waited getting “out of Dodge” for harder travel conditions to change to match the current forecast. .

Thursday night staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in the Old Port where we could walk to some place new to eat.

No reservations, no need for calling ahead when it’s during a snow storm or in the middle of winter during your instate Maine vacation.

The winds picking up and change over from icy drizzle to a snow crystal like sugar. You don’t have to be an Eskimo to know about the 50 kinds of snow. Living in Maine, because of her sheer size and many weather zones, you get a chance to experience it all. More than the eyeballs see what is developing. You can taste, smell, sense weather change in the Maine air any season.

Back in Aroostook County, over a foot of just white, fluffy light snow landing to blanket the Earth.

While in the Old Port region of Maine, the accumulation was under four inches of a different kind of snow. Granular, more ice than light airy snow flakes. A lot like sugar, sand and hardening up like compact cement to make it harder to plow or shovel.

We ate at Scales in the Old Port.

Maine seafood… Meg got the scallops, I worked on a pot of steamed clams.

More whole belly fried clams after that.

When in Maine, on the coast, it’s seafood the choice of many. Because it was probably swimming in the sea earlier in the day.

Not caught, hanging around, shipped eventually to all four corners of the World.

The neat thing about staying in an Old Port Hotel is the car is tucked away for the night.

No windshield to scrape. No snow to clear off the hood, roof and everywhere else after a Maine snow storm wraps it up.

Our winter jacket hoods were up like the zippers and braced for the Nor-Eastern seacoast winds. You could see even the Portland Harbor chopping, ice chunk water and swells forming as the winds picked up.

The plan on this trip was to re-visit and old familiar haunt, Wells Beach Maine.

The Old Port region of Portland ME’s waterfront just a bonus lead in stop for Thursday night.

The next morning, it was breakfast at the Hilton Garden Hotel lobby.

We could leave the car in the hotel parking garage until 3pm when we would be on our way to the next instate vacation stop at Well’s Beach Maine. Meg wanted to walk to Whole Foods to see her Nature’s Circle Farms produce display at that nearby location.

The yellow potatoes looked great, there were red beets there too. Whole Foods a really neat store and supportive of locally sourced farmers, fishermen, everyone in one neat display.

Exploring the shops up and down the hillside leading toward the Old Port harbor, we wandered in and out to sample the wares.

Landing at Market Square Jewelers to check out the estate pieces. Low key, no expensive oriental runs covering the floor that you don’t want to mess up with slushy feet.

No pressure and had fun locating a few pieces to celebrate the approaching Valentine’s Day and Meg’s birthday this past weekend.

All that walking, and knowing how much great Maine seafood is waiting to try at new venues, we trudged back down the slippery sidewalk slowly to wander into Gilbert’s Chowder House.

The seafood chowder was loaded with lobster, clams, shrimp, scallops, haddock.

There was not much room in there for the potatoes but those and onions showed up for the lunch date too.

These instate Maine vacations mean more food, working up an appetite to sample local dining fare and no diet worries.

But life is short, you and I need to take a break right?

The local restaurant and hotel lodging owners in Maine during the winter months are much more laid back. Not so summer tourist season hurry scurry.

No, because the Portland area weather was becoming more difficult to drive in, Meg and I decided to saddle up, to get on the road to Well’s Beach, Maine.

Six accidents along the road, most were single car and just off the road without damage.

We did not speed, we live in Maine and have experience on driving in snow and ice. To keep the shiny part of the vehicle on top.

Every summer, a vacation stay in Wells Beach Maine was a tradition of Meg’s family that continues.

Saturday we walked two hours down Mile RD to wander from Wells to Moody Beach, ME.

Saw some surfers braving the stiff breeze, blue skies, sunshine and low temperatures. They had a cheering audience and we snapped a few shots and video to use in future blog posts that always sample the many facets of this state called Maine.

Had to hit a favorite store, Reny’s to see if anything was on the shelves for the loved ones back home.

Grandchildren are fun to shop for and give back so much enjoyment when they get a gift. We had some hours to spend before the dinner bell rang again on our coastal instate Maine vacation.

The extra half a day going in really made the time go slower, more enjoyably.

Let’s go to Cape Porpoise and see if we can snap an image of the harbor, of Goat’s Island lighthouse.

The usual trip up Ocean Avenue in Kennbunkport, Maine part of the re-tracing familiar steps in this coastal section.

After seeing another Goat Island ME lighthouse to add to the collection, we noticed a couple going into a buoy covered hideaway.

At first glance thought the restaurant overhead was shut down for the Maine winter. Like many places that are not open or will re-open in March, it was a surprise to go into “The Ramp” part of Pier 77 located upstairs.

Lots of New England sports memorabilia filled the pub and met a nice couple from the Boston area.

We worked our way back to Wells to the Misty Harbor Motel.

The Verano’s meal stop for Chicken Marsala for Meg was not possible the night before due to the storm causing many places to not open for the evening.

We trudged to nearby Shop and Save to gather what we needed to dine in and the little apartment efficiency kitchen worked like a charm. While catching up on the day of winter Olympic events from the other side of the blue and green spinning marble.

We ate at Becky’s Diner in the Old Port on the way back up to home in Aroostook County Sunday morning.

Earlier, the Maine Diner was the breakfast venue the day before on our instate Maine vacation. Lots of snow greeted us on our return and no vacation, no matter how long, short or in between goes unpunished.

Vacation On A Maine Beach | Moody, Wells Beach Maine

    Vacation on a Maine beach.

Moody, Wells Beach Maine is one popular spot I have discovered. You’ve been laboring  pretty hard and  all work, no play makes for a dull boy or girl right? How about a little Maine beach sand? Some fun in the sun with sea salt air? The sound of a crashing waves? And lots of locally sourced surf and turf Maine food prepared just the way you like it, remember it from the last Maine vacation.

Depending on what you do for a career, I think most of us never really stop thinking about our jobs. The vacation on Maine beach is to run away and then look back at where we live, what we do for work, our family, how life is going so far. We’ve blogged about Wells, Moody Beach area of Maine’s coast before.

Too little to pick from and high priced means time for real estate market study of neighborhoods and housing stock. But apply lots of  impulse control in the real estate spending department.

To spend some time vacationing in a new region of Maine but making it a property investment at the same time. Knowing others would rent out what you purchase as long as their health allows. The same people taking the exact amount of days to vacation in the same section of the calendar annually is pretty common.

Tourist traps, yes, Maine coastal areas are but delicious, fun relaxing ones.

The density of people with license plates heavy to folks from New England was heavier than usual. The habit of a summer Maine vacation stay on the coast did not happen for many during the COVID pandemic. Just changing up where you live with something outside of that day to day routine. Maine vacations, no better place to land and explore.

So You Think You Know Maine…. Not If It’s From What’s Online.

News about areas of Maine that don’t get gallons of ink in the press.

Maine places that you just don’t see boat loads of online recycled electrons for copy used to spread the word around the web. It is always fresh and exciting when the same old tourist trap haunts are not the only Maine tourism information showcased.

Maine is such a big, beautiful and varied jewel. But like the dark side of the moon, what each unique corner of Maine is really like and what you want to make sure not to miss if you visit there is seriously lacking online. Maybe that is part of the magic of what you discover when you take the time to actually go to those little longer drive locations. What keeps it special and hidden and unspoiled.

    maine photos
What’s To Do In Maine? What’s Like? Where Do I Go? Need A Few Suggestions From A Local?

I like to go to the local library to dig deep for information on parts of Maine that I am not familiar with first hand.

And in the areas that I do know, there is always more depth and color in the information if you dig a little. What I have learned is if the person doing the book on where to spend your time in Maine is not ffrom that part of Vacationland, what is posted suffers dearly. The old axiom of “write about what you know” is so true. And to know an area is not just rehashing a few tidbits of information that show up over and over online.

It is doing time there so you collect from a stretch because it takes time to observe and collect what you end up sharing.

Like slow cooked food trumps the hurry scurry of drive through quick you deserve a break today. I can wait for my food without starving to death.

Check Out What You Are Missing. Frequent Local Maine Libraries! Find The Treasure Inside.

The latest book checked out from Cary Library was a tour of Maine. But the way the state was depicted was a gloss over of what most of us already know for odds and ends of travel guide information.

The author added a sarcastic twist and presented his stops along the highways and byways of Maine from a ridicule perspective. Ouch. It was presented in a hurried fashion giving the impression there was not much here to stick around for on a vacation. Like there were much better ways to waste his time than running up and down twisting US RT 1 into the willy wags of Maine.

Often times the tone in the paragraphs was obvious the writer was not impressed with many of Maine’s small towns.

Not exciting enough or just did not take the time to dig for more of the local happenings now and over the years. The mention of what the locals would consider highlights of the area and what to do and see while you are here was sneered at smugly. The historic value of the small town was diminished because the travel log writer seems disappointed with an air of is that all you have to offer a tourist or relocating individual thinking of moving to Maine in the pick me pick me stand out? There’s more, lots more but it does not make it to media outlets because you are off the beaten path where not everyone gets to go due to time limitations. Or publications leaving out huge sections of the state of Maine is there tell me a story.

Most of us have particular loyalty to certain Maine map locations. Because we live there or they are fond destinations in our trip down memory lane. We all love the lighthouses, the seacoast salt air and all the variations of Maine water front. Nothing trumps sitting on mountain slab of rock at Cadillac or Katahdin or a slew of other tall pinnacles. To just let go and stare out over at the vast land volume of unspoiled terrain that stretches out in all directions. It is humbling, spiritual, calming plus energizing all mixed into one. It’s where you do your best thinking about what really matters. Like the guy heading “up on the roof” as a city dweller that only had that option to get away for for a better life decision making perspective. (more…)

  • Maine, Tell Me A Story Collected From Your Travels.

Maine, Tell Me A Story Collected From Your Travels.

Story telling in Maine, the art form for weaving a tale has not lost its appeal.

I am lucky to have had parents who exposed all four boys in the farm family to many endeavors. Some like to hear about the yesteryear story of trailer trucking potatoes from Maine to the city market. I try to write about what I know. This past Friday I listed a house for sale in Maine owned by an owner operator who used to be one of the Prem Pak truck drivers.

Sonny Howe told me about taking Ole Elmer, a gas job single screw conventional trailer truck tractor minus the sleeper, a White Mustang model across the Canadian border.

He was donkeying over to across the US border in Houlton Maine to Hartland New Brunswick Canada. To pick up a load of potatoes that would be hooked on in Houlton to a larger twin screen more powerful diesel trailer truck tractor. But getting the loaded trailer through the longest covered bridge in the World in Hartland ran into a little difficulty. The loaded trailer could not make it up the hill on the west side of the Hartland New Brunswick bridge that spans the St John River. Old Elmer was named for Elmer Snell who was the mechanic back at the Prem Pack truck terminal shops.

Part Of A Family Owned Trucking Company, Prem Pak Hauled Potatoes Down Country, Paper Products As The Return Haul Load.

Old Elmer was bought and only supposed to be used to move boxes around the yard and not go out on missions on the hilly terrain of Northern Maine.

Dopey, a diesel not gas engine truck with the dwarf painted on it was supposed to do the to and fro of getting a trailer box set, loaded and returned to base. To unhook and let a larger, newer more powerful White, Peterbilt or International Transtar slide up, hook up and shoot down the highway to market.

Luckily, in small rural areas of northern Maine and into the Atlantic provinces, if you have a problem the village rallies together to find a solution out of a tight spot.

A local Canadian potato farmer who had an old Ford tractor with the transmission welded in third gear old was hooked to the front of the bumper that said “Ole Elmer” . The truck bumper like the side doors were hand lettered by Houlton Maine sign painter Allison Britton… no vinyl peel off decals in those days in early 1960’s in the transportation circles. The old Ford probably 8N was all the extra muscle needed. To pull and guide Ole Elmer up over the steep grade you have to conquer leaving Hartland New Brunswick, Canada.

Sonny drove a white White truck which we called “#3”, a cab over with sleeper, 250 Cummins diesel motor plant. He told me listing his house for sale that the truck was brand new, had a shorter wheel base and was armed with “velvet ride”. So after his story, and because my Dad is gone, I Googled velvet ride to see what I could find. It was a patented suspension and not just a sticker promising something empty to whoever purchased the over the road trailer truck tractor.

Maine Is Amazing People, Beautiful Surroundings.
Maine, A Fun Place Inside And Out. Drive The Back Roads. Outside And Discover Much About Maine, Yourself. Hit A Play Production Inside.

Velvet ride was supposed to protect the cargo, to reduce fatigue on the driver.

Who back in the days of using your ruler and a blue pen filling out a driver’s log book when it was not all computerized and not so transparent. Not so up to date or quite so precision accurate. Not all the Interstate systems were in place either for those involved in the second largest industry in our country… transportation.

I remember my Aunt Ruth who ran a horse riding camp and was a high school music teacher had a partner named Freeman Taylor.

He drove a Mack B series truck was rolled off the assembly line from 1953 to 1966. Freeman was like a big kid himself and had a memorable loud laugh that was infectious. Freeman would tell stories about hauling freight the only way, the back way down US RT 2A called the Bangor Road. The one where in Haynesville all the truckers are lost and buried in the lonely stretch of woods. Where if you count them off, there would be a tombstone every mile with the graves populated by all those missing long haul drivers.

Santa Claus Hill is one famous steep grade of black top below Haynesville. Malcolm Hill in Topsfield Maine is not bowl of cherries either for the early over the road long haul truck driver to navigate.

And without the power of today, and traveling overweight, the only way a trucking company could make any real money was to watch

Maine Is Baxter Park, Mt Katahdin
Bigger Than Life. Majestic, Constant, Challenging Mt Katahdin Maine. The Interstate 95 Was Started In The 1950’s. Benedicta Is Still Shy One Of The Pair Of Exits.

the engine RPM’s and to down shift with perfect timing. To get the load of Maine spuds to the produce market expecting them early the next morning. I think Freeman’s tractor trailer truck was a B-61. No sleeper. When you were tired you pulled over, just leaned your head down on the wheel propped up by your arms. For a little cat nap. Or you stretch out over into the passenger sheet to bag some ZZzzzz’s.

Bad weather but at least no drivers around you texting and causing accidents.

No super Interstate highway everywhere you had to make your stops for pick up or delivery of the freight. No electric fifth wheel pin and you hand cranked your landing gear up and down. You carried your own lunch, changed your own flat tile. Eventually you had your CB radios to work your way around the state police weight stations that set up in various places to keep the drive guessing. You also had your west coast mirrors, your chain drive wallet and your eight track stereo tape player. There might have been a few girlie magazines under the bunk mattress. It depended on the drive.

There’s your story for today from rural Maine and just in time to wrap it up with over 1300 words. The mission in blogging about what’s it like, what was it like in Maine trucking down the highway as the newest installment in the Me in Maine blog post this evening before time for shut eye.

Thank you Internet fans for being such faithful followers. It is most appreciated and the logs show which posts are the most popular. We will keep hunt and pecking, cranking out more as they ideas present themselves to hammer out as time allows. I love living in Maine and hope it shows.

    List Of Airports In Maine

Small private pilot airplanes, they are becoming more common as individuals take to the friendly skies over Maine.

local wings and wheels event at airport,
Wings And Wheels Makes A Local Border Airport Buzz With Activity.

Here is a list of all the airports in Maine. The small community airport helps connect rural Maine with population centers. But most don’t attract large commercial airliners with first class and coach filled to the brim with sky commuters. Because too many empty seats on a daily schedule of flights that are not subsidized.

The small air strip in a Maine town has a lot of activity someone without their wings would not be aware of each day. Where I live especially on the US – Canadian border there is another element of air traffic with small personal planes that are the jet fuel and gas guzzling type.

    maine small airports, community airfields,
You Never Know What You Will See, What Goes On At A Small Local Maine Airport.

Clearing customs, immigration inspections happen quick and easy at small local Maine airports without the usually roll down the window.

Approach the line with the stop sign. Put ‘er in park. To answer the question crossing the border about “anything to declare?” Not meaning to provide the chance to cleanse the soul and remove the guilt on whatever is troubling you. Keep that rolling around in your mind for another professional or higher power.

Small Private Operator Aircraft Fill A Hangar At A Maine Community Air Field.

The border crossing officer needs to know “do you have any fire arms, tobacco, plants or pets on board” and another inquiry are you leaving anything behind in the country you are leaving? Did you purchase anything that might require duty while traveling across the boundary border crossing?

More questions with you providing the answers to the guy or gal with the badge, wearing the bullet proof vest. “What is your country of origin” is the daily double question to determine citizenship as you hand over your passport and laminated birth certificates or driver’s licenses. That spell out your nationality and identity.

The paperwork that gets checked to see if you are who you say you are. If you have naughty or nice lately that maybe Santa connects with once a year to help in his background assessment. The letters from ex-wives and ex-husbands too get passed back and forth. About does the minor child have the other half’s permission to cross into another country or not is addressed.

Small airports in Maine attract commercial airliners that bring in the big wigs, the high muckie mucks as some dub them as high powered executive passengers.

Who monitor the local lumber mills, farm operations, manufacturing plants or are in office who hope to be elected to one. Air travel in Maine is alive and well on all the scales.

Flying in to whatever is headquartered in this rural outpost that are small dots on the map. Way way up in this northeast, northwest thumb of the USA. Touching down on small airstrips around the interior of Maine. Not just the handful of city airports that most are familiar with and use.

When Loring Air Force Base was active in Limerstone, B-52’s flying below radar and hovering the hills tightly could scare the heck out of the local population of people and wildlife, farm animals alike. When the skies are filled with twinkling stars not blinking aircraft navigational lights now, moving around the air space is much easier for private plane owner Sky King and Penny. Who are looking over the list of Maine airports to utilize.

Local medical life flight aircraft use the small community airport too. Angel flights that help small town Mainer families that are between the rock and a hard place.

They need a place to land, pick up the precious cargo and lift off quickly because time is ticking. For a vital organ replacement or someone elected for a bed of life when their time is up. Sometimes it is a fixed

wing plane and not a helicopter that needs a stretch of runway to land and take off. Border patrol, DEA, others use my local airport on a daily basis. The state of Maine’s forestry aircraft criss-crosses the state that is 91 percent wooded.

Chasing down suspects happens in Maine, not just in the movies. And smokey bear in the sky gets thirsty for the aviation grade 100 octane fuel too as they monitor the highways from above as the eye in the sky. Timing the lead foot speeding motorist’s time as they  advance too fast from this white line to the next measured with a simple stop watch. To determine “one atom twelve, we have a speeder. See the speeder down below in the yellow Yugo weaving from lane to lane on I-95 mile marker 286” (mic click).

Local chainsaws and higher performance snow sleds, race cars and even weed wackers enjoy the high test aviation fuel that the small local airfield offers as a local perk. At whatever airport in Maine you pick from the list or happen to live close to to enjoy the perks. Many snow birds use the local airports to get to their vacation homes. Some with pontoon and wheel combinations to make landing much more than just at the small list of Maine airports to consider. When touching down on a local runway that can vary depending on the day of sight seeing up above and down below.

Since deregulation of the airline industry, less subsidies are available to provide the helping hand to the community air fields. That threaten their existence and upkeep to keep them usable.

Paving runways if they have tar. Lighting, communications. Providing the fuel, weather and flight navigation assistance. Maybe offering a hot cup of coffee, some fix based operator conversation. Re-fueling body and plane and grabbing a handful of tourist information flyers. Before zipping up the leather bomber jacket with the sheep skin collar up high on the neck. As the aviators  trot back out to the airplane or helicopter with a flight plan in place. Climbing in whatever whirly bird big blade or silver winged contraption brought you down on the local Maine air field. Maybe an ultralight was the bird of choice that does not need much runway to up up and away.

National defense can help some strategically located Maine airports.

    local houlton maine airport
Local Houlton Maine Airport, History Is Rich In At The Local Army Air Force Base. Housing Prisoners Of War, Protecting Commerce.

Homeland security funds have been a blessing to my local KHUL Maine airport. That has a rich history like many airfields with assistance during past conflicts with other nations. Housing German prisoners of war that helped the local farmers and

foresters in their lumbering operations. Many of the old POW and army barracks used for soldiers and the prisoner captives from another land have been retooled for other peace time uses at their local base. Or sold off, hauled away to make creative housing in the small growing Maine communities. That re-worked the former barracks, parachute shed, kitchen mess galley, motor pool facility or whatever the structure into a clever housing transformation use.

Lend lease where local Maine potato and grain farmers used their tractors to haul aircraft by towing them across the border. To lend a hand before countries that were spiraling like cats finally dropped the shoe. And declared war on the other in the line of of force to preserve freedom of whoever was being held captive and against their will.

Maine’s many lakes and ponds get visits from aircraft wearing pontoons. They need fuel at marinas. The locals worry about a slip of vegetation that carries the dreaded milfoil vegatative infestation being deposited in their pristine, disease free waterfront jewel though.

The small Maine airports not manned around the clock like the ones with commercial airline schedules to maintain has a help yourself approach. Key the mic, watch the blue landing strip runway lights TA DA… come up like magic. As the private pilot hones in on the VOR radio signal to tractor beam the plane safely, slowly down out of the clouds. To safely land and then taxi over to the fuel pumps. As the pilot regroups and prepares for the next leg of the airline flight. Have seen my local airport in Maine used for cat delivery using a small commercial jet. Lots happens behind the scenes at your local airport when a community or region of Maine is lucky enough to have one.

Watch a video of a local fly in at Houlton International Airport held recently.

Horse drawn wagon rides, antique tractor towing the kiddies. Local vendor food too because aren’t you and I always hungry when sometime creates the smell of cooking onions? Dubbed Wings and Wheels, antique cars along with private personal aircraft all stopped into be part of the local celebration. That does a lot to share with the land lubber what exactly does go on out at the small Maine airport if a community is lucky enough to have one for economic development!

Nova Scotia Canada | Traveling Across The US Border To Another Atlantic Maritime Province.

Maine offers so much for vacation fun by herself.

But her proximity to Atlantic Canada means crossing the International border is so easy and expands your visit to create a two nation vacation. Just roll down your window, ask a few easy questions and hand over the paperwork. Then you are on your way and in another country.

Too many blog posts on travel concerning Maine have tried to squeeze the most out of a quick dash 48 hours in and out of Southern Maine. But those blog posts that are directional tractor beam designed to pull from the Boston Metro forget what if you already live in Maine? If you don’t have to fight the traffic in southern New England to waste precocious off time to weave your way carefully in and out of stop and go traffic. To high tail it from a urban city setting to get to wide open rural Maine.

But when you live in Maine, say the center of the state around Brownville Junction, in the area around Milo or Dover Foxcroft, you can easily have some exciting day trips.

You are already in Maine. Not a lot of precious time eaten up just getting into the Pine Tree State and to reverse directions back out quickly. To sample Maine recreational outdoor entertainment before the return to the rat races outside of Maine.

Canada is our friendly neighbor. Mainers are related to those on the other side of the US – Canadian border and we grow up visiting our over home cousins.

rips to PEI happen when you live in Maine. So does travel to Quebec City. And Nova Scotia in the Atlantic Maritime provinces is another international location to vacation as you share what both sides of the border offers.

In my day job I will get asked a lot is it dangerous being this close to Canada when you live on the Maine border.

Heck no. Fear of the unknown when you don’t grow up near Canada may be part of the uneasiness. That is usually caused by statements made by people who have never been to either Maine or Canada. But Johnny on the Spot anyway to give there two cents based on not very much actual knowledge.

Try it out for yourself. Cross that Canadian border and see what awaits near Maine. And the same advice for our Canadian cousins who love to beeline to Old Orchard, Wells, the other beaches especially.

Remember, it is hard to be an expert on a new area if you have not stepped foot in the area. If you have no frame of reference or history to draw from and share with others.

Nova Scotia, New Scotland became self governing in 1848.

A half dozen colonial wars created some neat forts and classy armaments to make them effective. More on the early history of Nova Scotia. Seems the Scottish headed to the Cape Breton Highlands and did not fill major portions of the early days if you got an impression from the New Scotland title that things would play out differently.

You’ll see the plaid kilts, hear the bagpipes and think of Brave-heart. When the military demonstrations in the enactments happen at the forts, but Scottish imprinting is not going to hit you everywhere you turn.

You may visit the Titanic wreck cemetery grave site, learn about the harbor explosion a couple years later that caused two thousand deaths, shattered so many windows back in 1917.

See the black and white photos of the heroes in the events that shaped Nova Scotia that are proudly displayed. And like many power

Victorian public gardens, a harbor boardwalk and ferry service to Dartmouth and other points are just part of the attraction to this area of Atlantic Canada. Adrian the tour guide working with the driver skippering the Harbor Hopper #6 said relations with Dartmouth across the harbor were a little strained.

In his mic presentation while hanging on in the sway of the street turns with his other free hand, he relayed the good news that both communities are lead now under a mayor from Dartmouth. Working together has taken a lot of work but is gaining traction. What was the initial cause of the cold shoulder between the two harbor towns? Something about a ratty looking European vessel that was not allowed in the Halifax Harbor. Turned away so it drifted across the channel, to be secured by thick boat ropes to pilings in Dartmouth.

Beaches are an attraction in Nova Scotia Canada.

There are over 40 beaches to visit. Being a peninsula and have several offshore islands, Nova Scotia is a playground for paddling in a kayak, splashing in the waves while swimming or just admiring the lighthouses, puffins, seals and all the maritime activities out on the water as you soak up the sun on a sandy beach.

Crystal Beach, Peggy’s Cove are a couple destinations to make sure to visit. When you are a point of land, jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, parked in the Bay of Fundy and have a large collection of islands, you need lighthouses. Lots of them like the one at Peggy’s Cove for example pictured below.

Take it home. Capture it with your camera to help remember the memory making and post those images to entice others to red rover red rover come on over to the land of the maple leaf. Have a waffle cone ice cream and pick up a knick knack for your Christmas tree, a magnet for your refrigerator, a photo for your fireplace mantel.

Sample the sea food, take in the coastal sights, fill your lungs with Nova Scotia harbor marine air. Extreme ocean tides happen in the Bay of Fundy too. Watching whales from aboard a tour boat is just one more vacation option on how best to spend your day in Nova Scotia. Have a tin of pop, some made by a local brewery and sit on a terrace or along the boardwalk taking in the sights. No thank you to the dulse.

Tour the sixteen acre park with ponds, a Titanic small scale boat, flowers of all colors as you sit and reflect on a bench. Tour the public gardens, consider what Nova Scotia was like, is now and where she is headed.

But never forget about the million immigrants who sailed to this new land, a better place. Learn about Pier 21, read and hear about the stories from historic records of those who thought of Halifax as an “Ellis Island” port of entry to a better place.

Lots to sum up and it takes extra time, more trips into Canada to absorb and collect. Which is easier when you are already deep into the heart of Maine for a jump off point.

Come to Maine to vacation but don’t feel you can not straddle the border. Go back and forth. Don’t let the customs and immigration border crossing process hold you back. From missing out what lies on each side of the line. The best of both sides of the international division can be combined for a richer experience when you make time to experience what each country, state, province has to offer.

When vacationing in Canada, feel free to include events and activities on the Maine side of the dotted boundary line too for a true two nation vacation. Post those pictures, share the experience online so others can know the true flavor of both sides of the two nation vacation.
