  • Maine, You Appreciate It More If You Are Just Getting Here.

If You Never Down Hill Skiied, Snowmobiled, Ice Fished, Pond Hockey Games, Winter In Maine Could Be A Whole New Experience.
Maine, Four Seasons, Not Just Winter.

Lulled in to a false sense of “it’s like this in Maine everywhere else” happens.

When you are lucky enough to grow up in Maine, you can easily miss the difference of day to day here compared to somewhere else on the blue and green marble. What makes it so special to get more than a week’s vacation or two in Maine? You get to know the people who live here on a daily basis for starters.

The people of Maine are spread out. Elbow room times fifty.

Big state, less people, friendlier folks is what it all boils down to in Maine.

The locals have to work harder to make local community events happen when there are fewer in the ranks. But smaller groups are tighter, cozier, more connected. Everyone cares about each other and it truely is a case of “the village raises your kids”. The children are the fuel, spark from watching sporting events, local musicals, to families enjoying outdoor recreation together.

But besides the down to earth, God fearing, hard working locals of Maine, you have to give plenty of credit to Mother Nature. Her handiwork in creating Maine’s 2500 lakes, ponds, and only about another 1000 rivers and streams means natural clean water makes it a wet experience. Looking at it from a deck chair, out on it in a boat or swimming, wading and fly fishing in it. Plenty of water, less crowds of people here to keep you from enjoying it, getting close to it. That’s another secret of why Maine is special.

The four seasons gives variations on a theme, of what to do for fun, relxation in Maine.

Not one but four seasons. Never getting bored with one because before you know it, we’re in to a new one. You never get enough of one, your fill before the next one shows up right on schedule. What about the weather, climate, topography in Maine?

If you think Maine is the most fun in the dead of summer hiking up Mt Katahdin, taking a open horse carriage ride at Acadia National Park or whale watching on a boat ride off a harbor coastal town, you make valid points. But you did not see the other many facets of this diamond, gem called Maine. Missing out on a blaze of red, orange, yellow fall foiliage as you sneak in to Vacationland for a long weekend. Or putting on a pair of boards, hopping on a snowsled to explore the ski areas or the 3500 miles of Maine snowsled trails.

Enjoy the images, photos of Maine and start seeing yourself air brushed in to the scenery of Vacationland. Consider become part of the local landscape, the human fabric by investing in some seasonal or full time Maine property. See your life take on new meaning. A greater sense of purpose for what is real, special and no or low cost. Watch our Maine community local videos. Discover what it is really like here in Maine, meet some of the people at the home town events.

  • Maine Water, Plenty Of It, Clean, Fun, Natural.

Maine, Clean Water Are Just Two Words To Described It.
Maine, Water Is Just a Given For Recreation, Personal Consumption

Every so often the Maine real estate caller we connect, engage with asks about water rights, the supply of H2O in Vacationland.

Have to smile and explain water may be scarce, in tight supply where they live now on the revolving blue and green marble. But it is not like that in Maine.

Water, well for starters Maine has 2500 lakes, ponds and another 1000 rivers, streams. So water being in short supply is not a condition you will feel in Maine. We kayak, white water raft, swim, ski. Land our planes with pontoons on the Maine waterfront. We enjoy the views whether on the Maine oceanfront or at sunrise, sunset on a Maine lake. And the water rights to the water are yours, run with the property like the rest of the minerals.

As for wells we drill for our Maine households, plenty of clean natural water the norm, standard in that department too.

And the “straw” in to the Maine ground with metal steel casing for 14 feet, then drilled in to solid ledge are not hundreds and hundreds of feet “all the way to China” well depths either.

What we see in our Maine real estate dog and pony trotting around the countryside is 35, 50 gallons of water flow per minute at 60, 70 feet kind of depth statistics or better.

Have a brother in Boxford MA and his well is over 700 feet deep. Yikes. That deep deep well in Massachusets north of Boston has some issues. And lots of filtering to clean up this, tweak out that mineral deposit happens with expensive equipment performing the operation. I have never heard of wells that deep in this area of Maine. And regardless of the depth, there is lots of good quality water and capacity supply to boot. Nice combination.

Maybe they have to drill further because too many straws from all those people poked in to the ground like a mosquito looking for a liquid lunch. Or maybe we are just lucky to have plenty of clean, fresh water to drink, or to play on in Maine.

Talked to a fellow last week who had a Maine water well drilled and because another friend down the road needed one, he got the two for one special.

Did not think to quiz, ask him if the day the Maine water well holes were poked in the ground was a Tuesday or not.

But $2800 was the damage for his personal Maine water supply for his brand new well with the ten day plates tacked to the stem of above ground casing.

Wake up, get dreaming in Maine. The water is just one more ingredient that makes the surroundings of Vacationland special. Come meet the people and other reasons that make Maine the way life should be.

  • Don’t Hurt Their Feelings, Make Sure They’re Entertained.

Not Handed Everything, Made To Earn It, Better Work And Saving Skills In Maine.
Working On The Maine Chain Gang In The Local Potato Farmers Storage Shed.

If you were born around the early 1920’s, you would have grown up feeling what it was like to be up against it.

And not liked it. Or not realized everyone was poor, but did not know it. Your happpiness would be small things. Like knowing where your next meal was coming from without insecurity or doubt. A game of kick the can after chores were done, and you had pitched in with your smaller role in the family. Contributing for the greater good with the three generations under one household roof line.

Having family around you all pulling together. To lean on, help.

Struggle, sink, swim or succeed together.

Slowly starting to build a nest egg, accumulate some things of your own that you took very good care of. Because they could not be replaced easily if you did not. Or simply being grateful to tread life water and keep your head above the drink. Breaking even, not sliding, pulled under. A simple case of sobering respect.

Not much money trickling in but you get creative with the resources you have. Add a degree of ingenuity and partner with others in the same boat to make it happen, get it done. Taking care of your most basic needs first and counting your blessings for that alone. Not lamenting what you want that you don’t need. Keeping it simple. That is the approach kids raised by parents that learned that survival skill pass on to their households. Or try to these days.

But if you come in to the world with boatloads of worldly possessions and your life is dependent upon stuff, things, material objects, the skills to survive and be grateful for the little things can get lost. Forgotten. Replaced with new and shiny. Trendy and expensive. Earning something, going without to get it is its own reward.

But if you miss that roll up your sleeves basic law of the jungle survival skill experience, what happens?

You come to expect, even suggest you are entitled to have everything going and money in the bank without working for it too. The bedtime kid’s book at the night reading ritual called it “the galloping gimmees” I recall.

A disconnect from the simple reality of how it is supposed to work. Real world can mean competitiveness, working hard to get ahead or stay alive. Not having a son or daughter get to take a test over and over until they get a hundred or higher. For fear that they might have a nervous breakdown if they only got an 85 but worked hard to get that “B” not an “A”. The expectation that it is up to you. Not someone else. Or getting something for nothing. Through manipulation, spin, hook or by crook. No matter what.

Like our Maine Governor reminds with ten little words often that he learned, applied growing up.

“If it is to be, it is up to me”.

Not someone else will take care of this, this and this. Not my responsibility if things go south. But on the other hand, give me the glory and ticker tape parade and credit for any and all that goes right, is good in the world. Beaming, basking in the sunlight of attention with a Little Jack Horner oh what a good boy am I self satisfaction.

Maine is not a state flush with cash, wealth but loaded, wealthy with a sense of community, family, and the respect for the great outdoors we are blessed with everywhere we turn, crank our head. It is a state where its up to you to pitch in, step up and help with the slack. To raise up our children to be responsible, have a life purpose and not have a hand out looking for something for nothing. Our happiness is an inside job and not dependent on everyone around us having a part in the script. Not external because we are empowered to be resourceful, patient, to work hard to do our part. And not distracted by material possessions or the need for constant attention, to be entertained or parked in the lime light 24/7. It is still about others, not ME in Maine.

  • Maine, I’m Going To The Store, Need Anything?

Rolling Farms, Maine Woodlots, Waterfront Natural Landscapes Is What You See.
Happen To Have An Extra Apple Or Carrot On You ?

Small rural community living in a state like Maine. Famous, well known for folks helping out, reaching out to others.

You’re heading to the store so you call a shut in and ask if he or she needs anything. That you can pick up, drop off because it’s right on the way. You are going to try to save them a trip.

Part of the reason for the call, inquiry is to save money, be frugal which Mainer’s are famous for and why we are the 46th lowest state for foreclosure, short sale, repossession.

We also don’t just stick to ourselves and go our own way in Maine.

No shutting out others happens when you live in Maine. A place where there is a strong community spirit. Maine, where folks wave, make eye contact, toot their horn, hold doors open and are connected.

Jumper cables for the battery under your car, pick up or SUV hood when the juice is gone, it goes flat. We all carry them, stop to see if we can help a vehicle parked along the road or with the hood up signalling the white flag is waving. The “stop and help them” neon light comes on in our heads when you live in Maine. That could have been you needing a jump. No need to spend money for triple A roadside assistance when you live in Maine.

Someone does a good deed but won’t take money, compensation or let the favor be returned. So you make an extra pie, those killer cinnamon rolls, or pick some flowers. Drop off some fresh vegetables or fruit from your garden, the local Maine farmers market. You will get them back in some way and don’t forget their random act of kindness.

Maybe Mainers help each other because there are fewer of us to “row the boat”. Or because we are more content, happier living here in Maine due to our beautiful natural surroundings. Maybe we are raised watching our parents reach out to those around them.

A carry over of helping the neighbor down the road get the crop in, building a Maine farm barn.

With the help in return guaranteed. Sure to come back in the same manner, the identical neighborly manner when you live in Maine. Where we need, know, support each other. And are connected in a very good way. Maine is the way life should be.
