    Maine High School Class Reunions

Going back to be with classmates, your Maine high school class reunion.

Have you been to a Maine class reunion at whatever school system you finished high school? If you have not, I suggest making every effort to attend your Maine high school class reunion.

Some say there is nothing more exciting, rewarding than reuniting with your childhood and high school class mates. Others would argue that period of my life was not all that rosy and why would I go back to relive the pain?

Maybe it is the 10th or earlier class reunion that spoils the habit of making an effort to attend your Maine high school reunion.

Houlton Maine High School 1975 Class Reunion
1975 Houlton Maine High School Class Reunion For The 50th Year!

If the classmates that moved away to return in swanky (leased) red sports cars and keep talking about their success, not asking about yours, that could sour the reunion.

In small Maine towns, the local community steps up and volunteers which in my book makes all the high school class graduates a “success”.

The longer you are out of high school and the more one by one you lose another reunion graduate, the tighter your class becomes.

Instead of a competition and comparing or defending your life so far since high school graduation, your class mates all pull together closer at reunions. News of the death of a high school classmate is a big part of it. That helps the rest wake up and notice we are not getting any younger. In my class of 1975 from Houlton High School we have lost 26 class mates since graduating.

The discussion when the get together is, say your 50th school reunion, shifts from jobs and promotions to how many grandchildren and comparing notes about health issues. How are you surviving losing your mate, the divorce, recovery from cancer, etc.

Just had my 50th Maine high school graduation celebration over a four day span.

Still thinking about the conversations, the laughter, the feeling of how much you miss these guys and gals. Some of my high school classmates for a slew of reasons missed the last reunion we nicknamed “The Shindig”. But I would bet most that were at this 50 year milestone reunion over the weekend will not want to miss another one for any reason.

Graduating From High School 50 Years Ago. Whoa. Long Time, Big Class Of 164 Members.

How do you answer in ten words or less “what have you been up to over the last half decade?

In my small Northern Maine town in Aroostook County of Houlton Maine, the high school’s alumni association is very strong and active. We get magazine newsletter editions of high school happenings around the year. I think this publication keeps fond thoughts of your classmates in focus.

When the latest alumni news edition comes in the mail or is opened up online and thumbed through digitally, most classmates beeline to their class year of high school graduation.

Maine 50th High School Graduation. Our Local Alumni Association Is A Strong One To Keep Us Connected.

News from your class, anything from a birth announcement to where someone took a trip or got together with another classmate or two. That hyper local Maine small town information is huge to stay connected with your high school classmates.

If you see the year you graduated but no one took the time to insert a paragraph or two of something pertinent to just your class, it is sad. I feel bad when a class above or below me is left blank. No news is not good news. It’s MIA and off radar. Draws a blank of just white space.

There is always something to report that others would love to read and to help the connection with your year graduating high school class.

Looking to re-connect with old classmates that you lost touch with after grabbing the rolled up sheet of paper and tossing the square hat with the dangling tassel high in the air?

Here is a video below that shows just one event of many held during my class of 1975 Houlton Maine high school graduation activities.

Do you regularly attend high school class reunions?

Does your high school education center hold a multi year event to celebrate with graduating alumni? When was the last time you re-toured your old high school or is it still standing? Remember where your locker was and who shared one beside, up or below you? The memories come back with the aid of a high school open house tour with your other classmates who help you “remember”.

The relationships began in the halls of your Maine school, from walking to it or riding the big yellow bus together are ones that only grow stronger.

What about you? As the years advance after graduation, after logging some miles outside the “My Old School”, the heart string tug of a Maine high school graduation reunion intensifies for me. Can’t wait for the next class reunion here in rural Maine.

  • Lighthouses In Maine, Do You Collect Them?

Lighthouses In Maine, Do You Collect Them?

Lighthouses In Maine, Do you collect them?

There are 65 Maine lighthouses. Some are low hanging easy fruit, rich eye candy to simple drive to, snap a photo. You’re done. Or to hang around and dream about what it was like being the lighthouse tender.

Maine Lighthouses, Lots To See, All Different In Many Ways.
65 Lighthouses In Maine, Have You Started Your Collection Yet? Prospect Harbor One Venue To Visit With The Camera.

But some lighthouses in Maine are not so easy to access.

You need to take the waterway highway to get out to them. Or the lighthouses is hiding on the seaward side of a Maine harbor island that you don’t access easily.

    Cape-Porpoise-Lighthouse Maine

Some Maine lighthouses are notoriously difficult to photograph because of their remote locations, limited access, or their positions on isolated islands.

Maine Lighthouses, Been To Many? Not Al Need A Lobster Boat Or Sea Kayak To Experience Up Close And Personal!

Here are a few lighthouses in Maine that are considered pretty darn challenging to capture, especially riding a boat in choppy seas and bundled up to stay warm creating the photo op.

    1. Matinicus Rock Light – Located 20 miles off the coast, this lighthouse is perched on a small, rocky island. It’s accessible only by boat, and weather conditions often make it challenging to approach. The remoteness and the rough waters around it make photography tricky.
    2. Mount Desert Rock Light – This lighthouse sits on a small, exposed island 25 miles off the coast of Mount Desert Island. The trip is long and weather-dependent, and with few structures around, capturing it often involves difficult sea conditions.
    3. Halfway Rock Light – Located between Cape Elizabeth and Small Point, this lighthouse sits on a tiny, isolated rock in the ocean. It’s difficult to reach by boat, making close-up photography hard, especially given Maine’s unpredictable waters.
    4. Baker Island Light – Although part of Acadia National Park, it’s located off the coast of Mount Desert Island and is less accessible than other lighthouses in the park. The backside of the island, where the lighthouse is located, can be difficult to view up close.
    5. Libby Island Light – Located off Machias Bay, this lighthouse is one of the most isolated and least accessible in Maine. It’s positioned on a rocky island with rough seas, making visits challenging even in good weather.
    6. Machias Seal Island Light – This lighthouse is on a disputed island between the U.S. and Canada, which adds an extra layer of difficulty. Tours are limited, and seas are rough, making photography difficult from both land and sea.
    7. Moose Peak Light – Located on Mistake Island near Jonesport, this lighthouse is remote and difficult to approach. The rocky shoreline and limited access add to the challenge of capturing a close, clear image.

If you’re up for the challenge, capturing these Maine lighthouses can offer rare and unique views that few others have documented.

Using a drone for off shore lighthouse orbits of video loops and photo stills is an option.

Battery life enters into the heading out, hightailing it back if the lighthouse is quite a distance away.

Have a sniper lens, the ones journalists use to get up close and personal in sports action or for bird watching.

Sometimes a tripod set up to keep movement to a minimum during capture helps. Whatever gets amplified the more you zoom in no matter how high quality the glass, the lens, the lighting, it helps to have a steady platform when hunting Maine lighthouses.

Some Maine lighthouses just are more popular or crowd pleasing.

Maine is known for its stunning lighthouses, and many open to visitors and steeped in rich maritime history. West Quoddy Head Light with her white and red stripes is one of the prettiest due in part to the setting. But Portland Head Light which is actually in Scarborough gets a lot of press. Took this snap of Portland Head light landing at the Jet Port.

    3. Pemaquid Point Light – Located in Bristol, this lighthouse is featured on Maine’s state quarter. Its rugged surroundings and historic museum make it a beloved landmark.
    4. Owls Head Light – Overlooking Penobscot Bay near Rockland, this smaller lighthouse has a unique history and breathtaking coastal scenery.
    5. West Quoddy Head Light – Known for its red and white stripes, this is the easternmost lighthouse in the U.S., located in Lubec. It’s a fantastic place to see the sunrise and explore the coastal landscape.

  • I Just Want To Be Left Alone.

I Just Want To Be Left Alone.

I just want to be left alone.

Leave me along, just let me be. Hear that desperate plea desire uttered almost daily from Maine real estate buyers.

Space, privacy, peace and quiet. In crowded populated areas it may be impossible or just too darn expensive to create it. In rural Maine, not hard at all.

    aerial drone maine farm
Farm Property In Maine. Your Nearest Neighbor A Half Mile Away.

The wanting to be left alone. It’s not that most are anti social. The group just share the common goa for different reasonsl. Getting away from people too close for comfort. Especially the ones constantly on your case on how best to lead your life. That have to point out where you are doing it wrong, missing the target.

Ever notice many of the folks self appointed to help you with your life should spend more time housekeeping their own?

It gets old living with the evil eye and wondering here it comes again. Tightening up or smiling and trying to back away and run for the hills. What I am doing wrong now in someone’s opinion?

So Maine is the perfect place to create some space.

Less people, more wildlife and 450 small communities, villages. Just a handful of cities in Maine.

Like the old song “Stop the World and Let Me Off”, the Waylon Jennings song … The poor love sick guy wanted to stop the spinning.

Couldn’t function with the “As The World Turns” of romance gone bad. Can not survive without the other.. just sick of tired of going round and round when the partner’s flame went out and passion elsewhere sparked. Missing the kissing and tender hearted care after his love went away.

Follow The Path Less Traveled. The One Up In Rural Maine.

The term “backyard” is very different depending on where you do live on the blue and green spinning marble.

To someone in Maine, your country neighbor is half a mile away. There may be a rock wall separating your property from the two hundred acres or more next door. In a 300 lot urban subdivision, everyone calls the fence company. To define the “backyard” that is measured in feet not acres. No side lawn, front yard and zero lot lines happens.

Grass, do you mow and how long does it take each week? Weed wack only and lots of bark chips not grass to shorten?

In Maine, we mow lawns like we hay.

Big open nicely mowed for the weekend lawns are the norm. Maybe they put drink holders on riding lawn mowers for a reason. I know people who say they do their best thinking mowing the lawn. Not in circles but angled, neatly trimming like you learned from a family member black belt lawn specialist growing up in Maine.

Maine Homesteads, Big Lawns, More Wide Open Space. No People In Sight To Spoil It All.

If you live where why have side windows but you can see the grain of your neighbor’s vinyl siding. No side yard, no back yard and parking. What about parking? Where do I do it? It has to be done out on the street. Or round the corner at a multi story parking garage for a hefty fee.

To get a sense of space, where you live now do you have to trot out of the cul de sac and down the street to a nearby park to get some?

Here’s a perfect example of a new property listing with 60 acres of land Maine homestead and only large land acreages, not people surrounding it.

Looking for peace and quiet with plenty of elbow room?

Maine, one more reason to consider Vacationland to get space. You can spend time with yourself and figure things out or enjoy not having people people people.

The statement “I just want to be left alone” probably happens because the person crying out for space can not get it. Wall to wall people everywhere you look where they live now.

No traffic, little crime, just pure and natural without the privacy fencing, zero lot lines, plenty of parking.

Maine is the way life should be. People are friendly because their personal space is protected and no problem maintaining it on a daily basis. Not just a week’s vacation in Maine for rehab. Maine, is she what is missing in your life? Do you want, need a piece of ME?

Flowers On Maine Farms. Some Tended, Many Come Up On Their Own.

I grew up on a Maine farm and the flowers around the 7 buildings pop up like clockwork.

My Dad orchestrated the field planting. My Mom wrangled the flower beds around the farmstead.

Years ago, bought the same family farm in Maine from my three older brothers. The rich fertile Maine farm dirt getss tilled, planted and cultivated tended with crops of organic produce of all kinds. There are sheep in the fenced pasture behind the second storage barn on the Maine farm. The chicken house had egg laying operations producing way way more than any family could possible consume.

You have to protect the chickens and ducks from predators like a fox. The fox has a family that likes chicken or duck dinners.

Mom and Dad are gone and relieved from the Maine family farm chores.

The farm field fields need yearly managing by others but Mom’s flower beds pop up right on schedule each year. While mowing the large farm lawns  one early evening this past week, I noticed Mom’s and Mother Nature’s tag team handiwork.

This is pair of images of one flower bed closer to the road at the set of farm buildings that are set back off US RT 2, Houlton Maine.

The simple, fragile beauty of flowers hit me as I carefully mowed around the many Maine farm beds.

Mom had many and enjoyed the beauty the Maine farm flower beds produced. I miss and appreciate my Mom in many ways but realize the flowers returning year after year is a comfort reminder of her handiwork. I can see her being industrious and on her needs planting, weeding, tending the farm flower beds. Looking back, knowing the hectic schedule of farming in Maine year round, I wonder how she made time for her flower beds.

On her knees, digging and transplanting in the Maine farm dirt.

That is one recurring strong memory of many about my hardworking and loving Mom. Both Mom and Dad grew up on Maine farms and instilled in all four boys the love and beauty of the soil’s bounty.
