    Easter In Maine Traditions

Easter in Maine, growing up our family attended church services, received something for spring dress clothes along with the Sunday noon ham, green bean casserole, the squash, potato, and ambrosia fruit salad.

Gelatin salads of all type were popular but I never took a shining to the suspended carrots in the jiggly Easter dinner selection. Yeast rolls of the cinnamon variety and breads of all types. Relishes, asparagus, broccoli, turnip, carrots, corn, peas and those pearled onions.

Fresh baked pies made from the fruits picked and frozen and packed away in the large chest freezer last summer and fall located and thawed.

Carefully placed just so in the homemade crust pie shells. With an artistic covering folded and tucked around the pie plates edges. Then with neat chevron patterned air holes added just so to decorate the top covering before the sliding the dessert creation into the oven to cook to perfection.

Puddings, squares and topped with whipped cream or ice cream completed the formal dining room feast for our Maine family. Lots of chairs, more than one table and extended family members pulling up close to what was on the Easter dinner menu. Food was very much part of the Easter memories.

Nowadays, going out to eat at local restaurant seems to be popular. Instead of the time spent in the kitchen creating the Easter holiday spread.

What is served up earns a tip from someone not home with their feet up. Missing out on the Easter holiday time to relax munching on the treats left overnight. The ones hidden cleverly by the long eared, whiskered one with strong back legs carrying a very large basket.

Jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and marshmallow chicks, a new book. A gift of Sunday best clothing outfit just for the occasion.

Potted tulips, an Easter lily or daffodil. Easter basket green straw lined the festive woven containers. All that was left behind by the generous bunny who took a page out of the Santa book spoke of spring that was starting up all around us in rural Maine.

Before the sea of sameness and broadcast automation recordings from far away tickling our ears. The local radio stations were live and local. Servicing the air waves of small local towns lucky enough to have one by giving clues on where the crowds of kids with baskets or sacks should head to find hidden tin foil wrapped chocolate eggs, ones that looked like a robin would lay and speckled too.

Candied carrots. Jelly filled or foam pumped up chicks and the traditional chocolate bunnies you felt guilty about ruining by removing their heads and ears by chomping down with your quick guillotine use of your front teeth.

Those town wide Easter egg hunts were made easier with clues broadcast that needed group deciphering. As the station crew stayed a few steps ahead planting the loot of candy, prizes, brightly colored treats that kept a dentist in business. It was trick or treating without the steps and the doorbell and done in broad daylight not darkness of night. Like a posse in search of sugar free for the taking if you stepped lively.

At Easter, the Saturday before the holiday, I remember my dad taking the four kids on back a farm truck loaded with empty cedar stave potato barrels. To Cary Mill’s and the Holmes house to purchase and transport live bunnies.

The frisky rabbits placed in the snug rows of barrels for safe transport on the under two mile trip back to the Maine farm.

We always took a short cut across the farm owned by brothers Uncle Carl and Donald Hagan over a private field road that easily cut traveling time in half. I remember the bunnies being released on our large rolling lawn and them hopping in circles. Soft, cute, quiet and with twitching noses and whiskers. Not making a noise but creating a trail of perfect round er… “by products”.

Then they were gone. Not placed on the dining room table. We never ate rabbit. Although World wide it is a popular dish to feast on when the meal time bell rings loudly. I’m not sure if they hopped to it to go AWOL or MIA by simply high tail it quick like a bunny.

Heading for the woods and back to freedom as they knew it. Or maybe at night a sly fox would make them a rabbit dinner when the sly one felt like easy pickings. Just did not feel like the same ole same ole chicken dinner or whatever the UPS truck hit on the way over from the package delivery storage warehouse that day.

Or maybe the Easter rabbits hopped back to the Holmes house where we had purchased them for resale. Like homing pigeons with built in GPS following their noses.

All I know is they disappeared and it was not the family German Shepherd or St Bernard responsible for the bunny’s demise.

High water levels from melting snow turned thoughts from hockey ice skating and down hill skiing or sliding to canoe races happen at Easter time in Maine. The local dairy bar pens and the ice cream window is sliding up to ask for your order. “Talk to me” the teenager inside and stooped over asks with pencil and small pad of paper. What will the ice cream treat you should not be ordering a large serving of be today? What looks good to you?

Little league tryouts and who’s selected for which team. The race to get the right size uniforms washed and ironed and delivered or new ones ordered with fresh numbers and team logo. And the baseball fields groomed and in shape after the ravages of winter reshaped them. The soap box derby race in Houlton is the state race and June 15th this year and not far away as we burn through the days on the April calendar. The White House Easter egg roll has a Maine connection too.

Kids digging out bikes, wearing rubber rain boots searching for irrestiable mud puddles.

Everyone out for walks and the April showers helping wash off the street sanding material. Whatever the snow plow placed on lawns riding on melting snow banks desperately need to be shoveled and raked. So fresh green live grass can pop up in unison. Just like the bulbed flowers around the foundation and in rocked gardens, the tree tips too have started to do when it is Easter in Maine. Happy Easter!

  • Settling An Estate In Maine, What’s Of Value Varies Greatly.

Settling An Estate In Maine, What’s Of Value Varies Greatly.

The death of a Maine home owner with lots of personal property and a place loaded with furnishings. Where the owner has called the sticks and bricks home for a half century or longer. They collected a lot of cargo. Especially those brought up during the depression and taught to never part with anything.

Come And Get It. Fish For Free Are Fresh In A Maine Lake. Adult Loons Are Excellent Anglers To Feed Their Young!

The settling estate process in Maine, what happens to the collection of valuables in the find a new home for everything? The personal property in a home or apartment has to be divided up or sold off and the money received used to pay any creditors. Or the treasure to get packed up and shipped off to a favorite charity for the good feeling and the tax deduction slip from the donation. Maybe the split up of the personal belongings between the heirs of the estate happens to provide each get an item or two momento as a  reminder of the lost loved one. So the memory of them comes alive when using it or just spying it in your home.

Buyers of homes loaded to the gills with wall to wall furnishings don’t fetch more and are a burden to the new house owner who needs room for their own belongings.

It is interesting to see how individual family members approach the what do we do with all the stuff left behind when the dearly departed ceases breathing.

Stops paying taxes and leaves the gravity of Earth. I had one house sale in Blaine Maine where the brother had three sisters. He was a state trooper and set up the rules of the procedure rules for the method to be used in the household belongings reduction. So the home could be listed for sale, sold with just the major appliances staying in the real estate transfer. He wanted to protect against sharp edge rapids, to avoid class five twists and turns in the navigation of suddenly choppy relationship waters.

Rafting In Maine, Surfing, Paddling The Whitewash! The BBQ Food On The River Tastes Great From All The Exercise.

The brother listed the items in each room in this Aroostook County home overlooking the Prestile Stream. Everything  inventoried to fill up many sheets of lines on a yellow legal pad. Down through the list in round robin fashion, the tedious process of a loved one’s personal items was started after everyone met at Mom’s home for the roll up your sleeves, the who wants what determination when coffee and donut sampling was done.

The heave ho, where does it go started on Saturday morning.

Everyone got a list copy to follow along with just like a college course syllabus outline.  Starting at the top of page one, the kitchen, then moving on to the dining room, the living room and so on. Down through the list the family members went. Together discussing line by line all the items, everything of their mother’s personal belongings needing disposal.

Maine Weather In Winter, Everything Does Not Stop.
Sunshine Outside In Maine During Winter. We Dress Warm, Head Outside. Saying Sayonara To The Couch And Channel Changer Wand.

For example, if the dining room  hutch was the item under the white hot spotlight, each sister was asked if they wanted to bid on it. If one wanted it, after bidding a hundred dollars, the next could up the ante bidding to a higher level. The item ended up going to the highest bidder and at the end of the auction among just immediate family members, all the money was split between them as part of the estate. I asked how did this approach came about and the brother smiled, saying you don’t know my sisters. He was doing everything possible to assure family peace and good relations continuing between all the remaining siblings for years to come. He knew hard feelings held inside can fester and mess up the family member peace and harmony if not done with extra sensitivity.

The things of value for those left behind when you lose a loved one.

It is not what would fetch the most money on the open market or craigs list, a facebook marketplace at a sale to the public. The more intimate items with a personal connection. I wanted the kool aid glass picture with orange and blue sail boats seashore motif on the sides that reminded me of a Maine summer as a kid on school vacation. The plastic Santa with a crack on the arm from heavy use. That held the colored Christmas light bulb that twist into the hand that sat on the kitchen window sill every time the month of December showed up on the calendar.

Another item cherished and not sold off at a garage sale or thrown away. The 1957 Pepsi bottle holding the green sprayer with cork plug to hold it in place after water refilling from the kitchen tap. Clothe irons did not have the sprayer attachment button to press and squirt back in the early 1960’s and earlier. Sprinkling clothing by shaking out some water and then ironing with the hot iron to smooth out to remove the wrinkles was the method of the day. I remember how hard my Mom worked in her cheerful way to make sure the four boys, my Dad were provided for every day whatever was needed on the Maine farm lifestyle.

Maybe death affects people in strange ways and can help explain the behaviors like two sisters muckling onto a lamp and pulling for all they are worth to pry it away from the other.

A friend of mine laughed when that memory was recalled when his mom and aunt squared up to fight tooth and nail over items. You learn that the sister felt their mom favored one over the other.

Or the big pot used to make potato soup or some other delicacy the way only your Mom could and did when it was a snow day. And school was canceled and how your spent the day inside or making snow tunnels and rolled men to watch over the yard like soldiers outside was a special time.

As snow came down and piled up but no one was worried or scared. It was a celebration of a day off from school and rituals that happened only when it was canceled or released early. Cookies prepared with all hands on deck are strong memories. The tools create and decorate them hold strong personal value.

A Monument In Memory Of Who?

Conversations from the grave in the “she said he said” about who gets what that the person who died reportedly promising  the momento to one particular family member. The small mink stole to be wrapped around the neck or left sitting on the shoulders just so. Back when it was fashionable to wear animal fur out in public without a public protest that the grandmother said would look best on and fit the tinier daughter like a glass slipper.

But watch out. When the larger sibling got wind of the gift news pitched a fit. Saying the fur, along with a number of other items were all promised to her by the same grandmother on her death bed final confession. Even thought the junior fur wrap would never fit on the broad shoulders of the larger built granddaughter, the claws extended as the grip on the delicate silk lined mink tightened.

You hear stories about families at a funeral while the unattended house of whoever died is paid a visit and items removed.

A death is a hard enough life event to adjust to when there is a loss of a loved one. But when a family member needs health care, what to do about greedy siblings who don’t work together to make that happen seamlessly.

Funeral arrangements, I see one or two siblings left holding the cost of the ceremony while listing estate property for sale. Whoever is the personal representative of the estate has a very tough and not always popular job. To take care of bills, hold back on the spending of money the estate does not have.

Little Things Have The Most Value… A Treat, A Gesture. From A Loved One Who Remembers You In A Will And Leaves Your Something Personal. Worth Far Beyond The Value Someone Unknown Would Place On The Item Lacking The Memories Tied To It For You.

The cost of the funeral can be out of hand when grief stricken family members don’t want to appear cheap and tend to over spend. In cases when whoever is picking up the cost of the final arrangements is left to settle up personally. Liens on property titles from funeral directors expenses happen in any state and I see evidence of them in registry of deeds searches for legal descriptions to property needing to be sold.

The best way to avoid a fight in an inheritance is to expect nothing and you won’t be disappointed.

It is the person who worked hard to earn the money to get the enjoyment from it right? Anything you do get is a bonus. The best way to assure when you are dead and gone that those left behind will fight is to not do a will. To die without spelling out your wishes in the last will and testament. Those thinking that there was inequality in how the spoils are split up can always contest the mental capacity of whoever died. Or was involved in the witnessing of the will that will testify on the day of the will signing the answers to standard questions  to test the soundness of mind left no question if they knew what they were doing. That it was their free act and deed and they agreed with the directions outlined in the will.

Billable hours and court house steps to wrangle with relatives is one way to spend the inheritance.

They say listing more than one sibling as co-executors of an estate can help avoid resentment. Making the division of what is carved up and given away to family members is better received when it is done in equal shares. Avoiding confusion of any kind helps in times of greiving a loss and you don’t die any quicker having an updated will to make known your final wishes.

So You Think You Know Maine…. Not If It’s From What’s Online.

News about areas of Maine that don’t get gallons of ink in the press.

Maine places that you just don’t see boat loads of online recycled electrons for copy used to spread the word around the web. It is always fresh and exciting when the same old tourist trap haunts are not the only Maine tourism information showcased.

Maine is such a big, beautiful and varied jewel. But like the dark side of the moon, what each unique corner of Maine is really like and what you want to make sure not to miss if you visit there is seriously lacking online. Maybe that is part of the magic of what you discover when you take the time to actually go to those little longer drive locations. What keeps it special and hidden and unspoiled.

What’s To Do In Maine? What’s Like? Where Do I Go? Need A Few Suggestions From A Local?

I like to go to the local library to dig deep for information on parts of Maine that I am not familiar with first hand.

And in the areas that I do know, there is always more depth and color in the information if you dig a little. What I have learned is if the person doing the book on where to spend your time in Maine is not ffrom that part of Vacationland, what is posted suffers dearly. The old axiom of “write about what you know” is so true. And to know an area is not just rehashing a few tidbits of information that show up over and over online.

It is doing time there so you collect from a stretch because it takes time to observe and collect what you end up sharing.

Like slow cooked food trumps the hurry scurry of drive through quick you deserve a break today. I can wait for my food without starving to death.

Check Out What You Are Missing. Frequent Local Maine Libraries! Find The Treasure Inside.

The latest book checked out from Cary Library was a tour of Maine. But the way the state was depicted was a gloss over of what most of us already know for odds and ends of travel guide information.

The author added a sarcastic twist and presented his stops along the highways and byways of Maine from a ridicule perspective. Ouch. It was presented in a hurried fashion giving the impression there was not much here to stick around for on a vacation. Like there were much better ways to waste his time than running up and down twisting US RT 1 into the willy wags of Maine.

Often times the tone in the paragraphs was obvious the writer was not impressed with many of Maine’s small towns.

Not exciting enough or just did not take the time to dig for more of the local happenings now and over the years. The mention of what the locals would consider highlights of the area and what to do and see while you are here was sneered at smugly. The historic value of the small town was diminished because the travel log writer seems disappointed with an air of is that all you have to offer a tourist or relocating individual thinking of moving to Maine in the pick me pick me stand out? There’s more, lots more but it does not make it to media outlets because you are off the beaten path where not everyone gets to go due to time limitations. Or publications leaving out huge sections of the state of Maine is there tell me a story.

Most of us have particular loyalty to certain Maine map locations. Because we live there or they are fond destinations in our trip down memory lane. We all love the lighthouses, the seacoast salt air and all the variations of Maine water front. Nothing trumps sitting on mountain slab of rock at Cadillac or Katahdin or a slew of other tall pinnacles. To just let go and stare out over at the vast land volume of unspoiled terrain that stretches out in all directions. It is humbling, spiritual, calming plus energizing all mixed into one. It’s where you do your best thinking about what really matters. Like the guy heading “up on the roof” as a city dweller that only had that option to get away for for a better life decision making perspective. (more…)

  • Wilderness In Maine, Welcome To The Allagash Waterway.

Wilderness In Maine, Welcome To The Allagash Waterway.

    Maine is pretty sparsely populated.

You and I have not debate nor need to split hairs on that statement. But within the stretches of remote wilderness, some areas stand out more than others. Usually waterways were the first prerequisite of any early settlement in Maine or anywhere. If there had not been the Allagash River, probably the plantation with the same name may not have gotten off the ground. Or earned a dot on the Maine Vacationland map.

Allagash ME, Vacationland’s Largest Township Land Mass. Almost 3 Acres Of The 42 Is A Famous Stretch Of Water.

Allagash, the community itself is a collection of Scotch-Irish DNA.

Located at the end of Route 161 and the French Acadian Saint John River Valley, this corner of Maine has a pretty unique history. The Saint John River is what brought settlers to the Allagash’s wild timberland regions up here in the upper regions of the Crown of Maine. The population of Allagash Maine is 220 souls.

But the land mass that is dubbed Allagash is 42 square miles.

Whoa. Way way larger than the 6 by 6 miles that the bulk of Northern Maine townships that show up as on the systematic square rows of township this, range that tout for their size. Allagash Maine is the largest land mass of any town in Maine. (Almost 3 square miles of Allagash is water.) Famous water called the Allagash Wilderness Waterway that is over 92 miles long and comprised of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams in the North Maine Woods. Canoeing, fishing, hunting, camping in the Allagash River Wilderness Waterway is on the bucket list of anyone with affection for the state of Maine. Images, pictures of Allagash Maine.

First organized in 1885, the town of Allagash was not incorporated until 1966.

    welcome to maine
Take Your Time! Welcome.. We Really Mean It In Maine. Come On Up… Way Way Up And See It All.

Slim fast is happening. Sadly the town has about fifty percent of the population now that it did in the 1970’s. The Allagash Maine large land mass is T16 R10, T16 R11, T17 R10 and T17 R11. More on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and a detailed map to show the regions: that explains the size of canoes and kayaks, other regulations of this protected natural resource to abide by when you are paddling down this wilderness liquid highway.

Henry David Thoreau visited the Allagash waterway in 1857 with the help of a pair of Penobscot native American guides. The most publicized section of the Allagash wilderness waterway is Chase Rapids located just downstream from Churchill Dam which is classified a class II rapid. Don’t expect wall to wall cell phone coverage and plan that it will be spotty.

Make sure to pack a first aid kit on your up to 92 mile trip. And as you plan your Maine vacation adventure on the river, be sure to build in extra days for a buffer. To absorb unexpected weather that may keep you off the water.

Guide services for hunting, fishing and the river adventure are the mainstays for the micro local economy in Allagash.

The town office has a lot of uses to be the most efficient and because there are not any other options to house them. Route 161 literally makes this the end of the line in Maine. There is a Maine beer named Allagash too. They employ around 130 workers and are growing like a lot of Maine based breweries. They are filling bottles with a variety of secret brew recipes in the Portland area, not in Aroostook County. Yet. (Smile).

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is one of the premiere canoe trips in the Eastern United States.

There is no argument fro anyone on that statement. Watch, listen to some Allagash River videos.  Get in touch with nature. Be outdoors in Maine and not limited to the space that four walls provides for a prison. Paddle a pristine series of interesting water components that you may or may not have been aware of up until now. You will not be bored; there is variety and something new every trip down the waterway because the season may be different, the weather not the exact same or the wildlife you see will vary. You are not the same either as you plan, paddle, reflect and connect with unspoiled nature.

Often the images of large Lombard steam log hauler timber locomotives are what many recall as the  huge idle dinosaurs left still standing out in your journey down the connection of waterways. A rusting reminder of the not silent buzz of lumbering activity that the Allagash area of Maine was back in the days of large cross saws two man metal saws. Long before chains saws motor driven saws were reached for to use before hollering “Timberrrrrr”.

Between 1900 and 1917, 83 of the steam powered locomotives were welded and brazed and bolted together in a Waterville Maine plant. Sadly, only 3 of these iron horses designed only for logging not passengers or assorted freight are still alive and running today. Watch number 74 of the Lombards hauling logs and in action. As it does what it was made to do years ago in the woods when it jumped the iron rails to hit the twitch trails plying the vast timber tracts in Maine.

Forget the paddles and life jackets and black fly repellent? No sweat. Put on your mittens or gloves, slide on a full coverage helmet and gas up. Hang on. Take the groomed trail trip by snowmobile. Two impressive train locomotives still rest off the shores of Eagle Lake in Piscataquis County in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

Your journey by canoe, kayak or maybe snow sled, hiking and hoofing it  will be memorable. But be prepared to assure you have a safe and enjoyable trip to the Allagash.

The Little Black River joins the St John in Allagash. The St John is the dividing line between Canada and Maine for most of the crown called Vacationland. Waterfalls, a series of lakes, places where at certain times of the year portaging around what’s up around the next corner could be prudent.

The smallness of the Allagash community like most low number towns and plantation settlements brings those that do live there closer. When a birth or death happens it is a big deal. There is hope or a deep loss and both are felt by the locals in different but powerful ways. Small towns or villages or settlements are pockets of intimacy and creative industry. Glowing brightly when the circle of life calling the small Maine community home is small, tight and depend on each other. Is that the take away where you live now? “Maine, the way life should be “is more than a catchy state motto. Come see for yourself and sample some pure Maine.

  • Maine, Tell Me A Story Collected From Your Travels.

Maine, Tell Me A Story Collected From Your Travels.

Story telling in Maine, the art form for weaving a tale has not lost its appeal.

I am lucky to have had parents who exposed all four boys in the farm family to many endeavors. Some like to hear about the yesteryear story of trailer trucking potatoes from Maine to the city market. I try to write about what I know. This past Friday I listed a house for sale in Maine owned by an owner operator who used to be one of the Prem Pak truck drivers.

Sonny Howe told me about taking Ole Elmer, a gas job single screw conventional trailer truck tractor minus the sleeper, a White Mustang model across the Canadian border.

He was donkeying over to across the US border in Houlton Maine to Hartland New Brunswick Canada. To pick up a load of potatoes that would be hooked on in Houlton to a larger twin screen more powerful diesel trailer truck tractor. But getting the loaded trailer through the longest covered bridge in the World in Hartland ran into a little difficulty. The loaded trailer could not make it up the hill on the west side of the Hartland New Brunswick bridge that spans the St John River. Old Elmer was named for Elmer Snell who was the mechanic back at the Prem Pack truck terminal shops.

Part Of A Family Owned Trucking Company, Prem Pak Hauled Potatoes Down Country, Paper Products As The Return Haul Load.

Old Elmer was bought and only supposed to be used to move boxes around the yard and not go out on missions on the hilly terrain of Northern Maine.

Dopey, a diesel not gas engine truck with the dwarf painted on it was supposed to do the to and fro of getting a trailer box set, loaded and returned to base. To unhook and let a larger, newer more powerful White, Peterbilt or International Transtar slide up, hook up and shoot down the highway to market.

Luckily, in small rural areas of northern Maine and into the Atlantic provinces, if you have a problem the village rallies together to find a solution out of a tight spot.

A local Canadian potato farmer who had an old Ford tractor with the transmission welded in third gear old was hooked to the front of the bumper that said “Ole Elmer” . The truck bumper like the side doors were hand lettered by Houlton Maine sign painter Allison Britton… no vinyl peel off decals in those days in early 1960’s in the transportation circles. The old Ford probably 8N was all the extra muscle needed. To pull and guide Ole Elmer up over the steep grade you have to conquer leaving Hartland New Brunswick, Canada.

Sonny drove a white White truck which we called “#3”, a cab over with sleeper, 250 Cummins diesel motor plant. He told me listing his house for sale that the truck was brand new, had a shorter wheel base and was armed with “velvet ride”. So after his story, and because my Dad is gone, I Googled velvet ride to see what I could find. It was a patented suspension and not just a sticker promising something empty to whoever purchased the over the road trailer truck tractor.

Maine Is Amazing People, Beautiful Surroundings.
Maine, A Fun Place Inside And Out. Drive The Back Roads. Outside And Discover Much About Maine, Yourself. Hit A Play Production Inside.

Velvet ride was supposed to protect the cargo, to reduce fatigue on the driver.

Who back in the days of using your ruler and a blue pen filling out a driver’s log book when it was not all computerized and not so transparent. Not so up to date or quite so precision accurate. Not all the Interstate systems were in place either for those involved in the second largest industry in our country… transportation.

I remember my Aunt Ruth who ran a horse riding camp and was a high school music teacher had a partner named Freeman Taylor.

He drove a Mack B series truck was rolled off the assembly line from 1953 to 1966. Freeman was like a big kid himself and had a memorable loud laugh that was infectious. Freeman would tell stories about hauling freight the only way, the back way down US RT 2A called the Bangor Road. The one where in Haynesville all the truckers are lost and buried in the lonely stretch of woods. Where if you count them off, there would be a tombstone every mile with the graves populated by all those missing long haul drivers.

Santa Claus Hill is one famous steep grade of black top below Haynesville. Malcolm Hill in Topsfield Maine is not bowl of cherries either for the early over the road long haul truck driver to navigate.

And without the power of today, and traveling overweight, the only way a trucking company could make any real money was to watch

Maine Is Baxter Park, Mt Katahdin
Bigger Than Life. Majestic, Constant, Challenging Mt Katahdin Maine. The Interstate 95 Was Started In The 1950’s. Benedicta Is Still Shy One Of The Pair Of Exits.

the engine RPM’s and to down shift with perfect timing. To get the load of Maine spuds to the produce market expecting them early the next morning. I think Freeman’s tractor trailer truck was a B-61. No sleeper. When you were tired you pulled over, just leaned your head down on the wheel propped up by your arms. For a little cat nap. Or you stretch out over into the passenger sheet to bag some ZZzzzz’s.

Bad weather but at least no drivers around you texting and causing accidents.

No super Interstate highway everywhere you had to make your stops for pick up or delivery of the freight. No electric fifth wheel pin and you hand cranked your landing gear up and down. You carried your own lunch, changed your own flat tile. Eventually you had your CB radios to work your way around the state police weight stations that set up in various places to keep the drive guessing. You also had your west coast mirrors, your chain drive wallet and your eight track stereo tape player. There might have been a few girlie magazines under the bunk mattress. It depended on the drive.

Some of the singers especially really related and sang about truck driving. Hank Snow, Dick Curless, CW McCall, Roger Miller, Dave Dudley are just a few that come to mind from days in high school as a record spinner DJ at the local radio station.

Country Jamboree on Saturday night had a lot of hard core country fans and the station even opened up studio B for live music during one segment of the C&W programming.

  • Maine, Pretty Hard To Sum Up The State In Just A Few Words.

Maine, Pretty Hard To Sum Up The State In Just A Few Words.

Maine is a big, spread out, sparsely populated state. And on the glossy four color tri-fold tourism brochures, the description of life in Maine is pretty skimpy.

So so much is left out of the discussion. The introduction to Maine’s local lay of the land landscape and how things rock and roll on a daily basis is an interesting tale. But being here in Maine to witness it first hand is the magic. Much is missing online to glean from and to use to piece together the intricate details. To spread the word about this neat place called Maine.

    welcome to maine
Take Your Time! Welcome… We Really Mean It In Maine. Come On Up… Way Way Up And See It All. Not Just The Southern Tip. There Is So So Much More!

Our small numbers of Maine people is what makes the area special. The unspoiled wide open space of a natural four season beauty like Maine is appealing.

But less folks, more home grown Mom and Pop business enterprises pushing the tourism levers keeps it low key and not highly spun. It takes money and time to send up the informational marketing flares around the Internet and in the print or broadcast media.

So when someone asks the loaded question “tell me what it is like in Maine”, a few queries pointed the other way helps cut to the chase.

To determine what they are looking for in their visit or relocation to Maine, what they don’t like about where they live now that they are hoping to leave behind in the rear view mirror. The reasons people come to Maine are many. But the definition of quality of life and how you want to spend your free recreational time best is not the same for every grasshopper. But small Maine towns are where it is at to feel comfortable, up close and personal.

Get to know the local residents in small Maine towns.

The folks who live in small Maine communities are deeply rooted and not shy about telling you all the reasons why they live in Vacationland. Out spoken and a tad dry or blunt makes what’s on the mind of a local Mainer refreshingly real and honest. It is usually said in a colorful, humorous way to prove a point. They will share the local history, include you in local traditions, help point you in the best direction for over the top food and fun.

The expression lingo, the cuisine, the what do you do for fun lifestyle is not quite the exact same. Depending on the village, plantation, small Maine town you find yourself lucky to be driving into to check it out slowly, be prepared for a pleasant surprise.

Because Maine is big to travel and access all the areas offer, the limiting factor to the experience is the sound of the ticking clock. Time eaten up getting up and quickly thinking about heading back hurts the take away. It limits getting beyond Portland and the beaches around Wells, Old Orchard, Kennebunkport.

It is awful easy to think Maine ends shortly after your rear tires leave the bump bump of the expansion joint on the big green bridge on the southern tip.

But that near Eliot, Kittery barely into Maine is the region that gets the press because the money to grease the marketing mixed in with the editorial content is closest to the population centers around Boston and beyond.

But when you decide to press deeper into interior, northern, eastern sections of Maine you feel the change. The traffic on the highways starts to drop off. The stars get brighter at night, the lakes and rivers are less crowded with folks sampling them on vacation or long weekends. There is less commercial man made and more all natural four season pure and simple.

The pay for your fun option is replaced with just pack a picnic and a tent.

Bring your canoe or kayak. Lace up your hiking shoes or hop on a bike, a pair of boards to glide cross country or down a fresh layer of new fallen snow. Don’t leave your camera home and pack for any weather in Maine. Head into the woods, hit the rec trails, see the farming way of life in bustling small Maine town surroundings. But push yourself to see more, collect more experience in different Maine locations during your life time.

You can enjoy the richness of the down to Earth in Maine. You get real home grown one of a kind and not store bought same old same old if you factor in a little more driving time. To good deeper and for spending time in a new undiscovered area new to you. For spending vacation leisure time without any time constraint leash limits within the big state of Maine’s long boundary line borders.

Or you might take it a step further for the two nation vacation. Maine has a rich Atlantic Canada Maritime province history to tap into and share. Remember Maine herself alone is six hours plus tall and when you get off Interstate 95 to cris-cross up the northeastern winding coastal routes or decide to head to places like say Jackman or Estcourt Station or Vanceboro, better provide for some extra time. Lots of it. To not just go to these neat places in Maine but to actually be able to spend your vacation exploring them. Hanging around to spend some time. To get to know wildlife and Mother Nature. Without the big expense that sets us back and takes away from the experience sampling Maine.
