Enjoying The Tail End Of Another Incredible Day On A Maine Lake.
The summer at the lake in Linneus Maine is warm and sunny. In the winter in Aroostook County the sky is sunny and crystal blue, but not so warm temperatures. No black flies. This is a summer place I am lucky enough to own for the four kids to enjoy. It always has a breeze off the Big Lake. That breeze creates something you can see. In the winter, water from Drews Lake splashes up against the concrete retainer wall and this can happen. Artwork, surreal ice layerings with the hands of the artist being a Northern Maine wind and lake water applied in waves, splashes.

Living in Maine makes you more aware of the surroundings, the weather, about life and what is important. The beauty of Aroostook County is second to none. Come explore.

  • Joseph Houlton Was From Salem Massachusetts And Moved To Maine.

Evergreen Cemetary In Houlton Maine Overlooks Town.
Evergreen Cemetary In Houlton Maine Overlooks Town.

Who is your town named after? In the case of Houlton Maine, Joseph Houlton gets the honors for wandering up shortly into the 1800’s.

Houlton scoped the area now known as Aroostook County out, met the local Micmac and Maliseet Indian locals and sent word back for the woman and children to follow. Houlton Maine is the county seat, the “shiretown” for Aroostook County. Aroostook is the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined and on the Canadian border with the province of New Brunswick.
The attraction to being in what became Houlton Maine was rich soil, plenty of space, not a lot of people and opportunity for your family. The early witch trials of Salem Massachusetts also helped get families to consider moving in this direction to avoid accusations of being a which and wisked away in the middle of the night. There was not such danger in the Aroostook County area that became known as Houlton Maine.

Joseph Houlton is buried at this spot high on a hill overlooking the town of Houlton Maine which is at the beginning of Interstate 95. As a kid, my parents took myself and three brothers to the local cemetary in Houlton Maine where my dad’s parents, family was buried. And in Hodgdon Maine where my mom’s parents and older family members who had passed away. A cemetary was not made to feel morbid or a place of sadness. Death was explained as part of life, nothing to be feared.

The sense of history, being part of a large family and the local connection to other members with the same last name was learned early on and thru out our lives. I made the same pilgrimage to the cemetaries where my four kids asked questions, observed and learned about early family members and town fathers who helped shape where I live in Houlton Maine.

Do you visit cemetaries to do more than honor the dead? Cemetaries with their veteran sections and American flags waving braving, proudly are part of the experience to a cemetary visit. Tracking your past geneology is like a Sherlock Holmes adventure to many too that travel to Northern Maine to unlock the secrets, to find missing parts of the family trees. The answers to many questions about an area lie in a Maine cemetary and they are a location for more than your imagination if you happen to be Stephen King. King, the horror writer lives in Bangor Maine with his wife Tabitha.

  • A Million, Billion, Trillion Seconds..Do You Know How Long That Is?

The talk of government spending escalating to fix this, fund that, provide this and this with the number a trillion dollars batted around makes you wonder.

How much is a trillion..just a tad over a million, or a billion? We instead of dollars..think of the comparision using seconds to put it all in to perspective.

A million seconds is 12 days.
A billion seconds is 31 years.
A trillion seconds is 31,688 years.

New terms are needed to be able to cover the amount of money being spent, the debt mounting up and exponentially creating more and more like an “agressive, likes to move around a lot” cancer. Check this simple link to see the comparison.

Do you think about over spending in your own household? Does it concern you what the government is doing to try to “fix things” ? Deficit spending..did you grow up with a household that practiced it? Does it affect how you sleep nights? Maine..we live way way simpler. The best things here don’t cost money. A paid for pickup looks just as special as a showroom Porsche or Ferrari. The people are down to earth, know what is valuable and lasting. They avoid going in to debt and have good impulse control. Spending money and loading up on material things is not done to impress or for any other reason. The size of our Christmas spending is not the barometer of how good the holiday was. We use benchmarks..different ones like not buying unless we have the money saved to purchase. Novel huh?

  • I Work In Sales, Deal With People, Like To Get Certain Real Estate Buyer Information.

It is good when a Maine real estate saleman is on the other end of the process.

Normally when a buyer for Maine property calls, I like to ask a few questions to get a handle on what the real estate need is. The buyer’s email address, phone number and address are important details to collect. In emails, we usually have all that data supplied and a list of property the buyer wants more details, to see the movie on, etc. But in the case of an office walk in, a caller, being able to at least get the email address is critical. To be able to follow up with the caller’s questions, property request is the whole reason I am here in Houlton Maine. New property that comes up is something this Maine real estate buyer is going to want a head’s up about. It’s called service. I am lucky to be a small real estate office so everything is live, local and not automation or with a call center out sourced halfway around the world.

I ordered a computer from Dell, a lap top and found trying to get customer follow up was hard. Very hard. It had had a 15% discount which prompted the purchase but the price reduction offered was not applied. To get the discount promised meant returning the lap top, ordering another just like it and then hoping the second time around the discount incentive sticks. Crazy way to do business? Sometimes bigger is not better and something gets lot in translation. Or one hand does not know what the other hand is doing. Nor do they care. Cookie cutter peddling of widgets. When you are a small David, you can run circles around Goliath. Not in every instance, but in many that count so that quickly situations are assessed, steps taken to implement the most efficient solution. Being small means flexibility is easy. Thinking on your feet and being able to talk to the person that knows what is going on, and can fix the problems is pretty refreshing.

Automation, waiting for a real live person, telling the story, getting transfered, waiting longer. To get the lowest price available means wading thru cyberspace up to your knees. Sometimes over your head. I am glad I work at a small, “you are talking to the boss”, the owner Maine real estate operation. When a Maine real estate buyer calls and ask do you know anything about this or this code number property. I smile and say yes. I took those pictures, that is me on that video taking you thru and around the real estate. The frustration when the buyer is talking to someone that has never seen the place, did not take the images. There is no video and very skimpy information for the caller. That is frustrating or a pleasant surprise when you are talking to the property who listed, marketed and will sell the Maine real estate listing.

If you are looking for a retirement Maine home to buy, or recreational land, a small mom & pop business, I can help you out. Northern Maine real estate is so much lower priced. The selection so much healthier so you get a good real estate fit. I have sold Maine real estate for thirty years this April. And instead of thinking real estate salesmanship, I have always thought just being a real estate locator is a better way to go.

If you start by listening to what the real estate buyer is looking for. What they have for needs and wants /don’t wants then you know their special unique situation. I suggest real estate listings that could meet that laundry list of desires and what to avoid within their real estate budget. The property sells itself. It is the puzzle piece that fits, is missing, is wanted or looked for. Maine real estate sellers also have special needs, desires and want a one on one communication with the real estate broker. No automation, quick access to the person that is going to list, market and sell the most important investment, the largest purchase the seller has ever made. The caller does not want to wait for a part time real estate agent. The buyer or seller of real estate’s time is just as important as yours and mine. • Maine Blog Posts That Need To Be Written, They Write Themselves.

Maine Kids..Playing Hockey Make Living Here Extra Special.
Maine Kids..Playing Hockey Make Living Here Extra Special.

When a song or blog post is inside, and needs to come out, that is compullsion.

They are short in time to write posts because they are part of the blogger, the writer or creator. They are blogs needing to be written. Maybe waiting to be written. They have to come out. Loosen your heart and open up to share what is discovered, what makes you who you are. Blog about what you feel, what you are passionate about. Those types of blogs are not spun, not for an inner hidden agenda. They are real, honest and sometimes rough, raw. But they sing with volume.

The blogs I post here range from life on a Maine farm growing up in Aroostook County. To earlier days in Maine radio and broadcasting, to videos on local Maine events. And my favorite job raising a family. It is my luckiest moment to write about four kids, the neat town of Houlton Maine I live in on the New Brunswick Canadian border. This stand alone Maine blog is an off shoot of a bigger brother on Activerain where over 1200 blog posts reside with every topic under the sun. So far. The story comes out slowly with blogs..you have to wait for the inspiration, the cue to let them out after they formulate slowly inside. Like chasing someone..but doing it by bus. Blogging is a slow, rewarding, enriching experience. Reading, following other blogs helps in that creativity, the craft.
