    Maine Lighthouses, Lobsters, Lake Loons.

The best things about Maine would be an awful long, varied list if

Maine, What Words Come To Mind?
Maine Is More Than Lighthouses, Lobsters, Lake Loons.

    you polled many people.

The first images of Maine when the word is mentioned are what?

Or when you tell someone you are from this big state with lower population in the right hand corner of the nation?

Often the list starts with Maine lighthouses, lobsters, loons. It can progress to snow skiing, kayaking lakes, hiking Maine state parks.

Or maybe other Maine food like our famous wild blueberries, potatoes get added to the poll results.

But lighthouses in Maine are in the top three when a survey is whipped out. Maine lobsters come up high and maybe because of all those vacations to Bar Harbor, Kennebunk or Ogunquit.

But Maine loons, the sound of their cry or laughter depending on your reaction, mood at the time are sacred. The Maine Audobon had a loon photo contest and offers other worthwhile information on the bird.

On Drews Lake, last summer there was a young loon lake island chick that was being abused by his Maine parents.

Other chicks had been eaten. So intervention to rescue the Maine loon chick by concerned local lake campers got him to a vet. And each took turns hand feeding him back to health, in a safe setting.

Maine Loons, Hanging Out And Fishing Together On A Local Lake.

Eventually a down country mother loon that had lost her baby was located to “adopt” the Drews Lake loon. And to provide a happy ending to the story. Evidently domestic abuse is not limited to just humans. Mainers living in the small town rural setting care more for each other, for the wildlife and the four seasons surroundings.

Special thanks to the Arthur Howell Game Shelter, Preserve that takes in “disabled” or abandoned Maine wildlife. The shelter is a neat place for school field trips and is located on the Lycette Road in Amity. Respect for the creatures in the woods, roaming the farms, out in, on and below the surface of the local waterways. Art is all over that.

I have known Arthur for many years and enjoy his visits with owls, hawks and other birds to the local Houlton Rotary meetings. He is definitely a friend to the wildlife of Maine. The place that Bambi goes when mom or dad are killed. Or for hurt animals to rehabilitate in Northern Maine.

  • To Appreciate Maine More Sometimes A Trip Is Necessary.

Maine People Enjoy All Four Seasons.. Winter Especially.
Outdoor Fun In Maine If You Are Dressed Right.

Your MeInMaine blog post author loves living in the Pine Tree state.

But traveling to points outside of Maine to some pretty special places on the green and blue marble can help reinforce I am where I should be living, raising a family.

Just returned from a trek outside Vacationland that simply serves to deepen the appreciation for Maine.

I have a son in his second semester at Colorado College in Colorado Springs CO. For spring break we decided to go skiing at all the mountains around Frisco CO in Summit County, including Breckenridge, A Basin, Vail ski resorts. His older brother who had a college vacation from Washington DC that staggered his little brother’s in Colorado came along to strap on the boards too.

Huge mountains, the Colorado Rockies one impressive setting.

Lots of snow like Maine, but way way more twisting highways.

Maine is more level to rolling. Sure we have the Carrabassett Valley where Sugarloaf USA Ski area is. But nothing like the mountain range, rock formation after range and all those tourists flocking there to spend some money. And Maine offers many little family friendly, low cost ski mountains like Big Rock in Aroostook County. Places where you don’t have 108 dollar and higher lift tickets.

When you hit a big establishment like Disney or Vail, Breckenridge, Copper or Araphoe Basin ski area, you realize it cost a lot of money to keep 31 ski lifts going. Or all those rides, attractions for kids over 44 inches tall. But I like home grown, local community citizens who step forward and work their hearts out to make an event happen. Local community events where it is not store bought but created like a pot luck supper. Everyone brings their best dish, provides their best creative talent.

In Maine, there is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer in the many small communities around Vacationland. Fun to take trips with the kids and see different zip codes and be part of the learning with family travel. But boy is it good to be home. Everyone knows your name, waves, is friendly and not in a rush like they need a heart transplant stat.

Maine, a place where your heart and head finally agree 100 percent on something. Get here quick as you can.

  • 8 Out Of 10 Americans Live In An Urban, Suburban Area.

You Don't See These In Cities. No Moose, No Space Or Land.
Land Prices Rising, Maine Land Market Strong.

If you quizzed the average American who lives in a crowded area, who dreads the daily adventure of a long grueling commute, he might share the desire to own some Maine land.

A big piece, property with acreage and lots of space, elbow room. Moving to the country where land is low cost, in plentiful supply is easy in a rural state like Maine. In Aroostook County there are eleven people per square mile. Land for under $1000 an acre that is high quality, often with waterfront or fertile soil, some type of woods growing on it. Lot of Maine wildlife.

When you live in a small Maine community you get spoiled, forget what 6 lanes of expressway traffic looks like. Until you take a son or daughter back to an out of state college. And get to see what real traffic is. What grid lock feels like. What having to avoid bumping in to someone, something feels like. In Maine the energy to protect, police your personal space is not a concern. It does not sap your mental strenth because of space, less people, fewer cars, the 4th lowest state crime statistic.

I see more telecommuters buying Maine land and hobby farms, something on the waterfront.

Broadband ever increasing connectivity speeds mean bring the job you do now there, here.

With a phone, fax, Internet connection the person purchasing your goods, services does not care if you live near the Bronx Expressway or in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago.

As you see food shortages on the latest, strongest Japanese earthquake, tsunami news coverage you also think of what if food ran low in the city. Or got so expensive that the price per gallon of gas is forgotten, or thought small potatoes now. Because basic good wholesome food is scarce and expensive and you, your famly is getting hungry. Or a bigger share of your wages after health care costs, insurances, gas, mortgages is being gobbled up, ecliped by what happens at the grocery store.

Maine’s land market is a strong one. And in a time when we see the media, real estate agents, brokers, REALTORS in some areas talk about housing bubbles, price spikes and uncertainity. And it is house this, home that as if that is the only kind of real estate listing bought and sold. Maybe because no land comes with that condo or McMansion. None to spare, gone in the concrete jungle. But nothing like Maine where you could buy 200 acres for less than $65000.

If you would like to buy a Maine 50 acre farm with abandoned home, double garage for $35,900, this real estate listing might fit your needs. Working on it vacations, using it as a recreational purchase. That eventually you retire to full time. Have a few hen chickens, grow enough to feed yourself, raising critters too. And maybe heading in to the farmers market to feed others. Enjoying plenty of clean, safe Maine drinking water.

Land values nationally have gone up 10% or more last year at a time when all you hear about the USA real estate market is about the problem areas in Florida, Michigan, California. Rural American real estate brokers are listing, selling more and more land. For lots of reasons beyond just a good investment that never disappears in value on paper like stocks. Underneath all is the land. I know someone who can help you own a piece of Maine land.

  • Local Maine High School Sports Create A Roller Coaster Event.

You may have front row seats to the Celtics, Bruins, Patriots
Being On Top In Your Maine High School Season Is A Great Rush For Players, Parents, Coaches, Fans.
    Group Hug. Swarming The Goalie.
games, enjoying them with mostly total strangers in the crowd of faces.

There is a sense of communion when you walk out of Fenway, a home game with the Red Sox blanking the New York Yankees in a three game set. Feeling pretty giddy.

But a local Maine sporting high school event offers a deeper sense of connection. To the team, to the folks sitting or standing all around you at a Maine sporting contest. Cost is vastly different too. Those front row B Town tickets cost one of your kidneys. The small Maine high school gym or ice arena contest only a $3 admission fee. Your Maine home town is a source of intense pride, respect because you watched the players grow up.

You may have even coached that boy in little league, sponsored his pee wee or bantams hockey team. You know his parents, his mom’s sister is married to your first cousin. Or your hair dresser or used to be your secretary. Small town Maine living is closer, the population smaller.

The need to help each other in volunteer events, service clubs, church functions is a given. Home grown not store bought sets the stage for a deep sense of community, togetherness.

So whether it is Maine swimming meets, football or basketball orange balls you watch, follow, it creates the same roller coaster up, down, twists and turns. In ice hockey our local Blackhawks boys Maine team had a heck of a year. With a winning record and lots of Kodak moments. The team you cheer, hoot, holler for when they are winning.

The same team you watch lick their wounds, swallow their pride as the rise to glory comes to an end.

Like the Maine fair roller coast ride where it slows, the side door opens and it’s time to stagger out.

Heck Of A Season But Suddenly It All Fetches Up, The Run Stops.
Seasons In Maine High School Sports Up And Down.
To find an Italian sausage smothered in fried onions, red and green peppers to take away the pain, loss when the fun stops.

As a local Maine real estate broker, capturing that up and down of youth sports mirrors the struggles and triumphs of life those players will find themselves knee deep in. All their lives and remembering the home town rooting for them. Telling them they can do it, stay in the game, don’t lose your head. Great year Blackhawks. Good luck Brewer Witches in the State Class B Championship play offs.

Maine, our fun is low or no cost. Vacationland is in our backyard, we’re already here. Own some of ME.

  • Ice Covered Glazed Maine Winter Scenes.

It’s been unseasonably warm, very rainy for a weather spell in Maine.

    Now back to the

Maine Is Ice Coated, Great Sliding Weather.
Maine Had A Day Of Lots Of Rain, It Spun The Trees Like Cotton Candy Machine.
last act of a Maine winter play production. Leaving sugar glazed ice photos to capture late in the day in Sherman Maine.

The extra water with frozen ground frost, meant cellars that never get water, did. Sup pumps work better when plugged in too. And when the water level increases in a flooded cellar, then the furnace quits, heat stops. Pipes freeze in unattended Maine homes with snow birds in Florida. Talk about train wreck, domino damage. Yikes.

Or the sub pump is working. But has a long long drain line for usual spring use only. To get the water in the cellar far enough away from the foundation so it does not come right back in.

    To avoid the vicious cycle.

Well, that cold water in that long hose outdoors as the temperature goes back to winter lower degrees of mercury on the themometer means it freezes. Cardiac arrests that pump like a stroke, heart attack with a plugged outdoor end.

Check your basements in those Maine homes! Unusual weather conditions in Maine these days had made many wet, threatening floods inside your home cellar you may not know about. Yet.
